DETACHABLE HANDLE Filed June 15, 1931 M M M W 0 m E M U H L m n a v w 3 .4 J u Patented Apr. 19, 1932 UNETEE g l h iffig rarest eerie];
DETACHABLE HANDLE Application filed June 15, 1931. 1 Serial No. 544,459.
This invention is a detachable handle, particularly applicable to ice cream cans, for lifting and carrying one or two of said cans.
The general object of the invention is to provide a handle of the character stated which is simple in construction and practical and efiicient in operation.
A more particular object is to provide a detachable ice cream can handle, constructed and arranged to be applied to two ice cream cans at the same time, for lifting and carrying both of said cans in balanced relation.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated in the an neXed drawings which form a part of this specification and in which.
Fig. 1 is a. perspective of my handle.
Fig. 2 is a side view of my handle shown applied to two ice cream cans for lifting and carrying said cans.
Fig. 3 is a side view of my handle shown applied to a single can for lifting and carrying said can.
Corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters in all the figures of the drawings.
My handle comprises an arm 1, formed at one end with a. double can-engaging member 2, and an arm 3, formed at one end with a single can-engaging member 4, which arms are joined together at their inner ends at 5 and extend at an acute angle to each other.
The double can-engaging member 2' comprises a shank 6 and a pair of lugs Z" and 8 extending from the extremity of the arm 1, the lugs 7 and 8 being spaced respectively from opposite sides of the shank 6 and there being flanges 9 and 10 formed on the e:; tremity of said shank at the opposite sides thereof respectively.
The single can-engaging member 4 comprises a shank 11 and a lug 12 extending from the extremity of the arm 3, the lug 12 being spaced from the shank 11 and there being a flange 13 formed on the extremity of said shank on the inner side thereof.
When it is desired to lift and carry two cans 14 and 15 the arm 3 being grasped by one hand (Fig. 2), the handle may first be way and then the other.
lowered and tilted counter-clockwise, so that the flange 9, on the lower end of the shank 6', may pass over the bead 16 of the can 14 and the lug mayenter the upper end of s aid can, whereupon the handle will be tilted clockwise until the flange 9 engages the under side of said bead 16' and said lug 7 engages the inner side of the wall of said can, the space between the shank .6 and the lug 7 allowing the handle to be tilted as aforesaid. The can 14 may then be lifted by the handle and the handle and said can tilted clockwise and lowered so that the flange 10 on the lower end of shank 6 will pass over the bead 17 of can 15 and the lug 8 will enter the upper end of said can, whereupon the handle and can 14 will be tilted counter-clockwise until the flange 10 engages the under side of said head 17 and the lug 8 engages the inner side of the wall of the can 15. Both cans are then firmly engaged by the engaging member 2 (Fig. 2) and said cans may then be lifted and carried from one place to another by means of the handle. The angular relation of the handle arms 1 and 3 is such, that when two cans are lifted by the handle upon grasping the arm 3, the cans will balance each other and assume a perpendicular position (Fig. 2).
The handle may be readily disengaged from the cans by tilting the handle first one If the handle (Fig. 2) is first tilted counter-clockwise the can 15, engaged by the lug 8, will be likewise tilted, while the space between the shank 6 and a lug 7 will allow said lug 7 to move inwardly away from the wall of the can 14 and the flange 9 of shank 6 to move outwardly from under the bead 16 of said can so that the engaging member 2 may be readily withdrawn from the can 14. The handle may be then tilted clockwise with relation to the can 15 to remove the shank flange 10 from under the bead 16 of can 15 so that the engaging member 2 may be withdrawn from said can, the space between the shank 6 and the lug 8 allowing the handle to be tilted clockwise.
If desirable one can only may be lifted by my handle upon applying the engaging member 2 to only one can or by applying the engaging member 4 to a can as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the arm 1 being grasped by the hand when the engaging member 4 is applied to a can. The single engaging member 4 is generally used for lifting an ice cream can from a cabinet or lowering the can into the cabinet.
I claim as my invention:
1. A handle as disclosed, comprising a pair of arms joined together at one end, and a double engaging member on the outer end of one of said arms, the other arm forming a hand grip member.
2. A handle as disclosed comprising a pair of arms joined together at one end and a double can-engaging member on the outer end of one of said arms, the other arm form ing a hand grip member and said arms bein so disposed, that when two cans are engage by said can-engaging member and lifted by grasping said hand grip member, said cans will balance each other.
3. A handle as disclosed comprising a pair of arms joined together at one end, a double engaging member on the extremity of one of said :arms, and a single engaging member on the extremity of sa1d other arm, said arms forming hand grip members.
