BARREL LIFT.
Specification of Letters Patent. {Patented June 20, 1922.
Application filed February 15, 1921. Serial No. 445,133.;
To all whom i may concern:
Be it known HERMAN HERMELINK, Jr., and Rosoon B. SHIFFNER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrel Lifts, of
which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for lifting or up-ending barrels, casks, drums (being distinguished from barrels in the sense herein used by being of even or substantially even diameter throughout instead of having an intermediate bulge) and the like,and which operation in the handling of receptacles of this type, and which are usually of relatively great weight, imposes a considerable and objectionable. strain upon the stevedore or other operative in handling such receptacles on the wharf and in moving the same or preparing for the movement of the same from the wharf to the vessel or from the vessel to the wharf; and more par ticularly to provide a'device for the purpose indicated which will give the operator an increased purchase and leverage upon the receptacle and will avoid the necessity of manually grasping the barrel or drum in the manipulation thereof; and with this object in view the invention consists in a constructon and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of an apparatus embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a barrel in the reclining position.
Figure 2 is a view of the same detached.
The device consists essentially of handles or levers 10 terminally and intermediately connected by transverse flexible elements 12 and 13 consisting of chains as illustrated, or any equivalent thereof such as bands, straps or the like. The terminal connecting element 11 is preferably adjustable in length as by forming the same of sections connected at their adjacent ends by an adjustable coupling, or interlocking means indicated at 13.
In operation the connectlng element 1S thrown over the barrel o like receptacle as indicated in Figure l'adjacent'to one end thereof, and the intermediatetransverse connecting element 12 is disposed under the other end of the receptacle, whereupon by lifting the free end of the handles or levers a receptacle may be moved from the horizontal to the upright position with a mini mum of effort upon the part of the operator. As the receptacle approaches the upright position, and to prevent the swinging of the same beyond a standing position, should an unnecessarily vigorous impulse be applied thereto, the operator may readily raise the remote ends of the handles or levers to cause the outer connecting element 11 to catch the barrel near the top and thus steady it and bring it to a state of rest.
The levers or handles are preferably provided between the points of connection of the transverse elements 11 and 12 curved offsets or deflected portions 14 to accommodate the bulge of the barrel.
In applying the device to a barrel it is obvious that the inner or intermediate. connecting element 12 will readily swing under the near end of the barrel without involving any loss of time or special manipulation, so,
that the operator may proceed-rapidly from one receptacle to another 'inthe operation of tip-ending the same, but for use in connection with drums or receptacles of a substantially cylindrical form, i or in other words those receptacles which are not provided with an intermediate, bulge co-rre-- sponding with that of the standard barrel or keg, it may be found preferable to employ a relatively-thin band or strap as an intermediate connecting element 12 so that it may more readily slip under the end of the receptacle.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new and usefuli's:-
1. A barrel lift having levers or handles c'onnectedat one end and at intermediate points by 'transverse fiexible' elements for respective engagement with the opposite sides of a receptacle adjacent respectively to the opposite ends thereof.
2. A barrel lift comprising handles or ments, one of which is adjustable in length.
3. A barrel lift levers or handles contransverse elements with oflset or outwardly nected at one end and at intermediate points deflected portions. by transverse flexible elements for respec- In testimony whereof they afliX their sig- 10 tive engagement with the opposite sides of it natures. 5 receptacle adjacent respectively to the opposite ends thereof, said handles or levers be- HERMAN HERMELINK, JR. ing provided between the planes of said ROSCOE B. SHIFFNER.
