It is common practice in connection with trousers, knickerbockers, plus fours, and hke garments, to provide adjustable side straps whereby the waistband measurement may be varied as required so that the garment is supported on the wearer by means of the close fitting waistband, and the use of other suspending means such as braces or a separate belt is rendered unnecessary. Hitherto the components of the side straps have been stitched to the waistband, and the whole being of non-elastic material, the tightening of the straps sufliciently to support t e garment results in a non-resilient tightness about the waist of the wearer which. is not conducive to that comfort or freedom which is so desirable, particularly in the case of athletic exercises or games. i The ob'ect ofthis invention isto provide external side straps for trouser garments, which will have all the advantages of ordi-' nary straps in regard to adjustability, accessibility and location, with the additional advantages of elasticity and comfort' without in any waysacrificing the facility with which the garments are put on or taken off, which operation does not involve the fastening or unfastening of more than the usual number of fasteners or buttons provided on trousers,

or of buttons or other fasteners on the inside of the waistband as is the case with a belt (elastic or otherwise) incorporated in and gvholy positioned on the inside of the waist- With the above stated object the invention consists in a trouser garment having side straps with adjusting fasteners located externally of the waistband, one component (at least) of each strap being of elastic nature, and passing slidably through an aperture in the waistband and terminally secured on the inside thereof at a position spaced from said aperture. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, both components of each side strap '65 are slidably passed through apertures in the waistband, and are respectively attached to elastic members located between the\waistband and the lining thereof, the front components being attached respectively to elastic members which are terminally secured to the waistband at the front, while the rear components are secured respectively to opposite ends of an elastic member on the inside of the back of the waistband.

It is known to providein a trouser garment an-elastic belt incorporated in the waistband on the inside thereof and adjustable at the front, but when the garment is on the person such adjustment involves undoing the waisthand; and, moreover, the tightening of such belt has a tendency to gather the fullness of the waistbandand the lining at the front 1 owing to the resistance to free movement of the belt caused by frictional contact of the 7 elastic material with that of the band and lining. Such gathering at the front is both unsightly and uncomfortable.

, My invention provides an elastic support which is externallvadjustable at all times, and the gathering of the fullness is at the sideshalf on each side-which is the naturalpla'ce. It also provides adequate len th of the elastic components of the straps so t at they will fulfill their purpose of resiliency under all conditions of adjustment, while retaining the externally neat appearance of ordinary side straps which, however, are too short to provide the desired elasticity even go if made wholly of elastic fabric.

The front components of the straps are attached respectively to the ends of elastic members 7, 7 the other ends of which are' se cured as at 8, 8 to the inside of the waistband near the front thereof. The rear components of the'straps are attached respectively to opposite ends of an elastic member 9 which is otherwise unattached. After the straps and elastic members are fitted and secured in the manner described, the lining 3 is turned down and stitched to the band along its lower edge in the usual way.

What I'claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
