My invention relates to garmentsand more particularly to garments for females of the type commonly referred to as middy blouses. The latter constitute what may be termed a sport garment and in their most general-utility, comprise part of athletic cosas tumes worn during physical culture work in the gymnasium and when indulging in othen and thereby bring about a slovenly and ob-.

jectionable appearance which can be over,- come only by a constant and continuous readjustment of the garment to its intended position and which ofttimes results in undesirable exposure of the person. The invention has for its object to provide a gar-' ment of the indicated class in which all of the recited and other existing objections are overcome without in any way detracting from the advantages inherent in the garment in question. Other objects-will a pear from the description hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the claim.

,In the accompanying drawings-which illustrat'e an example of the invention without defining its limits, Fig. 1 is a front view of the novel garment; Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail side view and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view illustrating another form of the invention.

The garment comprises the body 10 made in conventional form and consisting of front and back sections 11 and 12 joined joined together by sewing 13 at the opposite sides,

the front section 11 bein open as indicated at 14 and provided with uttons and button holes 15 or equivalent fastening means for closing the same atwill. The' customary sailor collar 16 and either elbow or full length sleeves 17 are included in the garment in the. usual way. As so far described, the garment may be of any well-known middy type and may include any usual or special features adapted to this class of garments.

The dimensions and relative positions of the parts in the illustrated example are such that the elastic insert or strip 22 is located approximately in registry with the base of the spine, with the connected tabs 20-21- and insert 22 comprising the band a developing no strains upon the person of the wearer. As the wearer bends backward the band a is simply drawn forwardly between the legs without developing any tension sufficient to stretch' the'insert 22 to any extent and when the wearer resumes an upright mal p ace; the band (1 however, efficiently prevents the garment'from-being drawn to such a position as to require manual readjustment at the finish of the aforesaid It the wearer bends forwardly, the band a will first shift rearwardly in a manner corresponding to the forward shifting referred to above and with i if the bending movement ,is extreme, the insert 22 will be stretched to provide the increased length in the band a necessary to compensate for the extreme forward bend. 'As soon, however, as the wearer returns to a normal upright position, the inherent elasticity of the insert 22 will restore the latter and with it the entire band a to its normal condition; in any case, the garment will be maintained against shifting to any position which requires manual readjustment of said garment on the part of the wearer. In this way the desired trimness of appearance is at all times maintained without in any way interfering with the efiiciency of the garment as a sports, athletic or gymnastic garment,

and without developing any strains uncomfortable to the wearer or injurious to the garment.

In the form shown in Fig. 4, the front section of the band a is made in two sections,

When it is de sired to wear the garment with this form of the invention incorporated therein, thev fastening devices 23 are disengaged and the garment put on in the ordinary vway; the sections 20 and 20 are then brought together between the legs of the wearer and unitedby connecting the fastening devices 23 with each other. This form of the invention operates in the same way and ossesses the same advantages as the form rst described.

Various changes in the specific forms shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.

A womans athletic garment of the middy blouse type comprising a loose body consisting of front and back sections, and a band connecting said sections with each other and consisting of relatively inelastic portions and'an elastic knit insert permanently secured to the same, and located in said band so as to normally lie in approximate registry with the base of the spine when the garment is worn, arranged to pass between the legs of the wearer to maintain the body of the garment in position on the wearer and having its opposite edges curved to fit the thighs at the crotch.
