IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,366, dated December 12, i876; application filed November 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SYLVESTER J. TUOK ER and MASSENA E. GARY, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Combined Sash Lock and Holder; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the device with the case partly broken away and applied to a window-sash, the double function of the locking-bar being illustrated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of a modification of the invention. I
The object of our invention is to provide an improved form of combined sash-lock and sash-holder, which shall automatically maintain the sash in any elevated position, holding the same at any desired height without danger of falling, and which shall also be so arranged as to lock the sash when lowered, so as to prevent access to the building from the outside of the window.
To this end our improvement consists in combining a rubber faced cam-headed lever for supporting the sash by frictional contact, a spring for pressing the cam against the window-frame, and a pivoted bar which in one position forms a bearing for the thumb or finger to restupon while lifting the end of the cam-headed lever when raising the sash, or which may be thrown over on its pivot to engage with a notch in the window-frame when the sash is down to lock the same against all efforts to raise it from the outside.
In the drawing, A represents a windowframe, to one of the sashes B of which our device is shown applied. 0 represents .the case cast or made in any approved way, and screwed to the window-sash. In this case is arranged a cam-headed lever, D, pivoted at a, so that its rubber face b may be brought against the window-frame or removed therefrom, as may be desired, the face of the cam being made of rubber to increase the frictional contact, and thus render it less liable to fall, and also to prevent the defacing of the woodwork. This cam-headed lever projects at its opposite end beyond the casing to permit its manipulation, and its cam-face is habitually pressed against the window-frame by means of a small spring, 0, coiled about a short stem, 61.
E is the locking bar, which is pivoted at e to one of the flanges of the casing. This bar is used either as a bearing for the thumb or finger when withdrawing the cam -headed lever from the window-frame, by a squeezing action of the thumb and finger, as shown in dotted lines, or it may be thrown over on its pivot toward the window-frame, as shown in dotted lines, to engage with a notch inthe window-frame to lock the sash when lowered.
As a modification of our invention, instead of pivoting the locking-bar upon-an independent pivot upon the flange of the casing, we may, as shown in Fig. 2, pivot it upon the stem d, upon which the spring is coiled, and slot the upper side of the casing, so as to permit the free play of the lockingbar in the performance of its double function.
In referring to the scope of our invention we would state that we are aware that a combined sash holder and lock is not new, and that the rubber-faced cam-headed lever and the pivoted locking-bar are also old, and we therefore confine ourselves to the particular arrangement of the spring-pressed rubberfaced cam-headed lever, and the pivoted locking-bar, whereby the latter is made to perform the double function, as described, and a simpler and better combined sash holder and lock is produced at a less expense;
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is-- The combination, with the spring-pressed rubber-faced camheaded lever D, of the pivoted bar E, arranged to be utilized as a hearing for the thumb or finger in manipulating the eam-headed lever, as well as a lockingbar, to engage with the notchesot' the window-frame, substantially as described.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 13th day of November, 1876 SYLVESTER J. TUCKER. MASSENA E. GARY.
