IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY GUARDS OR COCKEVES FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,334, dated December 1 2, 1876; application filed June 20,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FAYETTE W. KNAPP and CHRISTOPHER SoHALLHoRN, of Fiddletown, in the county of Ainador and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Safety Guard or Cockeye for Harness, of which the following is a specification:
In the drawing, Figures 1 and 2 are elevations with portions cut away. Fig. 3 is a sec-.
tion on line a w in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Our invention consists in a peculiar construction of the cockeye which connects the trace with the single-tree. The eye which embraces the single-tree is swiveled to the yoke, which is attached to the trace, and is provided with a spring-actuated cross-head or follower, between which and the end of the eye the hooker stud which is upon the end of the single-tree is embraced.
A is a yoke, which is provided with a cross bar, a, and does not differ from the corresponding part of the ordinary cockeye. B is a long eye or loop, which is swiveled to the yoke A in any convenient manner, and is chambered out at b to receive the spring 0. O is a plunger, which abuts upon the spring 0, and is provided with .a follower, D, having a semicircular notch cut in it, which corresponds to the form of the inside of the end of the loop B. The cross-head D is provided with guiding-lips, which extend over the sides of the loop B, as in Fig. 3.
By virtue of the yielding of the spring 0 the space between the follower D and the end of the loop B adjusts itself to studs or hooks d of any size.
To place the cockeye upon the single-tree it is only necessary to force the follower D back with the stud d and slip the loop B over the stud, when the spring 0 causes the follower D to bear firmly upon the stud 61.
The advantages claimed for our invention are its absolute safety, it being impossible for the trace to become accidentally loosened from the single-tree, and as the spring 0 holds the eye firmly on the single-tree, the wear and noise consequent upon continued jarring and friction are avoided. It is also simple and easily constructed.
By using a swivel the trace will never be twisted, and the force will always be exerted in a straight line, thus avoiding the possibility of fracture or breakage from this cause.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A cockeye for. connecting trace and singletree, having a loop swiveled to yoke, and a plunger, to the end of which is attached a follower with guide-lips, substantially as shown and described.
