My inventioncomprises a plunger shaft 6 slidably and rotatably mounted within a housing member designated in general by the numeral 7 and mounted within a recess 8 formed in the casement. The shaft is supported atits inner end by'a bearing portion 9 formed upon the inner end of the housing '2', andthe outer end of the shaft is provided with a knob 11 slidably feathered to the shaft 6 and rotatably supported by a face plate 12 threaded or otherwisesecured to the outer end of the housing 7 and seated within a recess 13 formed in the outer face of the casement. The inner end of the plunger shaft 6 is provided-with a latch actuating member 14' ro-' tatably engaging a reduced portion 16 formed upon said inner end of the shaft, and held thereon by a suitable retaining nut 17. 1

A pair of pins 29 are secured upon the plate 28 to extend inwardl in parallel relation to the shaft 6, said pins eing arranged in the same relative relation as the apertures 26 and notches 27 whereby said pins may pass thru said apertures 26 and notches 27 when in registering relation. The inner ends of the pins 29 extend thru apertures 31 formed in a partition 32 mounted within the housing 7 to support and guide. the pins in accurately alined positions. Springs 33 are mounted around the pins 29 between the partition 32 and the plate 28 to normally move the plate outwardly against a collar 34 secured upon the shaft 6. The collar 34 abuts against the inner end of a bearing portion 11, formed upon the knob 11, and a nut 36 is threaded onto said portion '11 to retain the knob in operative assembled relation to the face plate 12, thereby limiting the outward movement of the shaft 6 and plate 28 as actuated by thesprings 33.
A collar 37 is mounted upon the locking member 21. The collar 37 is provided with a radially disposed arm 38 arranged to engage a pin 39 extending rearwardly from the inner face of the locking member 24 whereby rotation may be imparted from the collar 37 to the locking member 24. The collar 37 is arranged to be adjustably secured to the looking member 21 for rotation therewith, preferab y by means of a serrated face 41 engaging a correspondingly serrated face of a shoulder 42 carried by the member 21. The collar 37 is normally held in proximate relation to the shoulder 42 with the serrations thereof in inter-engaging relation by any suitable means, such as a spring 43 whereby the collar 37 may be moved to disengage the shoulder to permit the collar and arm 38 to be adjusted angularly to desired positions, and
to change the combination or unlocking position as indicated by the knob 11.
The locking member 21 is provided with an annular flange 44 upon its inner end and contacts, under certain conditions, with electrical terminals 46 mounted in insulating bushings 47 in turn mounted in the inner end of the housing 7. A conductor 48 leads from one terminal to the usual door bell indicated at 51 while a second conductor 53 returns from said bell to a source of electrical energy 52 and from thence by a third conductor 49 to the opposite terminal 46. Therefore, when in ordinary use as a door bell the push-button or plunger shaft 6, when pressed inwardly, moves the member 44 to close the gap across the terminals and against the tension of a spring which tension operates to break contact of the plate 44 with the terminals 46 when pressure on the plunger 6 is released.
The knob 11 is feathered to the outer end of the shaft 6 in any of a plurality of keyways 54 whereby said knob may be set in any desired angularly adjusted position relative to the shaft. The knob 11 is provided with a dial portion having calibrations 56 marked thereon and readable with respect to a fixed index 57 marked upon the face plate 12 whereby the knob 11 and shaft 6 may be rotated through desired angles of movement in either direction, the degree of such movement being indicated by the calibrations.
The operating mechanism constructed substantially as illustrated and as above described is assembled into the housing 7, and the face plate 12 secured thereon. The housing is then inserted into the recess 8 from the front of the casement and secured therein by a plate 58 and securing bolts 59 extending into engagement with the inner end of the housing 7 thru the inner face of the casement 2 and on opposite sides of the bearing 9 of the housing 7, whereby access may be had to the mechanism from inside the door when necessary, but preventing tampering by unauthorized persons from without.
In operation, the locking members are normally turned with the notches 27 out of registration with the apertures 26, as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings. In this relation, when pressure is applied upon the outwardly extending end of the shaft 6, the shaft is moved inwardly and the inner ends of the pins 29 are moved against the locking members 24 and 22, thereby causing the said locking members to be moved inwardly until the flange 44 is moved into contact with the ends of the contacts 46, thereby preventing thefull movement of the plunger 6 and its member 14 necessary to unlock the latch The mechanism may be set either for a single or double combination for unlocking, in the following manner:
By changing the relative position of the serrated collar 37 to the shoulder 42 of the member 21 so that when the pin 38 engages one side or the other of the pin 39 when the notches 27 register with the apertures 26, it is then only necessary to rotatethe knob 11 thru at least one complete revolution and then turn the proper graduation 56 on the knob or combination dial 11 to register with the index 57 which setting is, of course, known to an authorized operator, which will register the aligned notches 27 and apertures 26 with the pins-29 on the plate 28. Pressure on the button or plungerfi will then move said pins 29 thru the registered or aligned notches and apertures and permitsufficient movement of said plunger 6 to unlock the latch 3.
Or, the serrated collar 37 maybe set relatively to the shoulder 42 so that when the pins 38 and 39 contact the notches 27 and apertures 26 will be non-registering, in which case the knob 11 is turned .toset the plate 24 with its apertures 26 opposite or in registration with the pins 29 and then by reversing the movement of the knob 11 the member 21 and its flange 22 may be rotated to set or register the notches 27 in register with the already registered apertures 26 and pins 29. The proper registering positions, as indicated by the knob 11, being known to the operator.
When the apertures 26, notches27 and pins 29 are aligned or registered the plunger 6 is moved inwardly and as the pins 29 move thru the registered notches and apertures the member 14 by means of its beveled surface 19 engages and retracts thelatch' 3 of the door 1 so that the door may be readily opened.
After the door is opened and pressure on the plunger 6 released the springs 33 on the pins 29 will move the plate 28, collar Set and 20 hence the plunger 6 to normal position. A slight rotation of the knob 11 will unregister the notches and apertures from the pins 29 and if the plunger 6 be now pressed inwardly said pins 29, will move the member 21 and its associated parts against the terminals 416 which-serve as a stop to prevent further move ment of said plunger.
It is to be understood that the member 24: is rotatably mounted within the housing 7 with sufficient friction to permit rotation thereof only when moved by the pin 38.. As the sprin 50 is constantly pressing upon the said member 21 and associated parts, the plate or member 24 is normally moved against stops 55 which hold said member 24 in spaced relationto the ends of the pins 29.
While I have illustrated and described my invention in only one specific embodiment, the specific details of construction and arrangement are subject to modification in a great variety of ways without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not wish to be rest-rictedto the specific structure as illustrated and described, but:
desire to avail myself of all modifications which may fall within thescope of the appended claims.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure to Letters Patent is: e
1. A door fitting comprising a member mounted within a door casement, said member being rotatably and axially slidable withinthe casement; means mounted upon the inner end of the member for displacing the latch of a door mounted'within the casement to a door releasing position; means normally preventing axial movement of the shaft to latch displacing position, said: means being outside the door to a releasing position whereby said member maybe moved axially to a door releasing position. .2. A door fitting comprising a shaft slid-' B5 ably rotatably mounted within a door caseadapted to be manually manipulated from ment; latch actuating means mounted upon; the inner end of the shaft and movable by: an axial movement of the shaft to displace a door latch to a door releasing position; a pair of relatively rotatable locking members mounted upon the shaft and having apertures movable to registering relation when the locking members are in unlocking relation; means operable from outside the casement to move the locking members to unlocking relation; means mounted in connection with the shaft and movable axiallytherewith to engage the locking members when in looking position and to enter the registering apertures when in unlocking position the locking members being movable axially with the shaft when in looking relation; .and
means limiting the axial movement of theshaft and locking members when said locking members are in looking position to prevent displacing the latch.
3. A .door fitting comprising a shaft slidably and rotatably mounted within a door casement; latch actuating means mounted upon the inner end of. the shaft and movable by an axial movement of the shaft to displace a door latch to door releasing position;
a pair of relatively rotatable locking members mounted upon the shaft and having apertures movable to registering relation when the locking membersarein unlocking, relation, one of said members being feathered to the shaft and the other being rotatable relative thereto and frictionally engaged within the casement; means for imparting f in unlocking relation; and means limiting the axial movement ofthe shaft and locking members when said'locking members are in locking relation to prevent displacing the latch. 5
