the necessity of, detaching the typeholder.
bars from the machine; In the constructional form as hitherto designed one of side Walls or cheeks holding the type bearing members between them, is made detachable which entails, however,.the drawback that the type members lose their guide hold and can fall into disorder, thus rendering the exchange diflicult and wearisome. This drawback and others are obviated in the "present constructional form which permits an easyexchange ofcomplete sets of type members without alteratingthe position of the type holder bars in the machine. 0- The main feature'of the lIlVBIltlOIlflS, that 3 prises the. type members together with their springs, and constitutes a self contained exchange body enclosed between the cheeks of the upper end ofthe barforming a forked holder, 7 suitable closing cap or locking member is put, over the said forked end.
The invention is illustrated diagrammatically and by way of example on the accom ipanying drawings on which Figure 1 is a side view of a type carrier bar, the forked upper end of which contains an exchangeable holder comprising nine type members; Fig. 2 is a separate viewof the holder, Figure 3 a line X-:X of Figure 2, Figure 4 a front view of the assembled members, partly in section, x and Figures 5, 6 and ,7 are perspective representations, Fig. 5 showing a closing cap, Fig. 6 showing a cap piece which can be put The object of the inp a separate holder frame is used which com section through the holder frametaken on the:
upon the forked upper end of the bar and Fig. 7 showing this upper end. i
The shank s of the type carrier bar is forked at its upper end, forming two parallel checks 2? and 9, '(Fig. 7), the uppermost portions orf rims of which are so bent and curved as to form two lips 12 and 9 There is a gap between the cheeks p and 9, adapted to receive; the type holder frame a (Figs. 2 and 3) which] is shaped somewhat like a comb and provided with holes 2' extending in the direction of the gaps between the teeth of the comb. The type pins 6 are formed with reduced shanks guided in these holes and the pin shanks which ex; tend into the gaps between the teeth of the comb are surrounded with helical compression springs f bearing at one end against prismatic abutments 1; forming the rear ends of said shanks, and at the other-end against an annular .shoulder surrounding the hole 2'. The abutment '0' is that part of the individual type member upon which is exerted from the rear the blow by which the type is pushed forward into its printing position. The individual type members comprising each a por-. tion I) and o and a connecting shank 10 may be permanently assembled on the frame a since the exchange of type is ordinarily made by an interchange of frames (1 with the attached type. Obviously the shank connectingthe portions 72 and o of the type may be separable I as by having the said shank detachably connected within the portion bby means of screw threads or otherwise. Below the abutment. heads 0 an immovable supplementary lug r is provided at the holder frame a. The type members are guided within the laterally open gaps of the frame or comb af.
The completely filled holder frame a constitutes the self contained exchange body which can easily be inserted into and removed from the forked upper endofthe bar 3, i. e. between the cheeks p and 9. Means, such as elastic or spring supported projections and cavities for their reception, are provided at the holder frame a on the one hand and the cheeks p and g on the other hand in order to retain the holder frame a in proper posi-' tion between the members 10 and g, This fas H tening maybe completed orsupplemented by means of a detachable locking member, or members, for instance such as shown in Figs. 4-6, which comprise a clamping U-shaped member 9 having curved lips g 9 adapted to engage with the curved portions of the lips 12 that is to say, to be slid over them from eitl ier side so that the cheeks p and 9 cannot spread apart but remain in intimate contact with the holder frame a inserted between them. Finally, the cap is is slid onto the combined parts 9 g g? and p a 9, whereby the closure or looking is completed.
I wish it to be understood that other locking means than those just described may be employed in connection with the assembled parts of the type holding device. In view of the necessity that the type carrier bars in forming a group are arranged closely side by side and contact with each other at their lateral surfaces, care must be taken, that the upper closure means do not protrude over these surfaces.
The inner faces of the cheeks p and g act as positive guides for the abutment shanks 2) which slide in the recesses u. Owing to the type members 6 being retained together in the frame a the exchange can be effected very easily without the necessity of removing the type carrier bar from its proper position. It is thereby rendered possible to substitute quickly and easily for instance a set of numeral types for alphabetical types or types of diverse denomination for a set of types of other character, or vice versa. For the purpose of effecting such interchanging operation at any time, a plurality of holders comprising type members of different char acter may be provided for. 7
