Description

B. BERKMANN SURGICAL INSTRUMENT Filed Nov. 5, 19 4 2Q f Z2 (4 Z0 (4 0 f -l|= w 'mh QM? wig? Z A? 6 I Patented Mar. 16, 1926.
UNITED STATE-S BORIS BERKMANIL OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
Application filed November 3, 1924. Serial No. 747,466.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Bonrs BERKMANN, a citizen of the Republic of Poland, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improven'ient in Surgical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to multiple needle holders for surgical use, and the object of the invention is to provide improved means for attaching and detaching the needles to the holder.
.I obtain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my.
holder showing the same in use.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the complete device.
Figure 3 is a view of the back of the locking bar showing some of the needle shanks in cross section.
Figure 4- is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the holder bar and locking bar partially in cross section.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modilied form of needle in which the eye instead of being a mere perforation has an opening at the side of the needle.
Like numerals denote like parts throughout the several views.
In the form selected to illustrate the invention the device has a holder bar 10 provided with a handle 12, which by preference extends obliquely from one end of the bar so that the patients body will not interfere with the hand of the user.
The bar has a plurality otT slot' apertures having narrowed portions 14: spaced along it' at regular intervals, in the present case there being four. On theb-ack of the holder bar a locking bar 16 is slidingly mounted. It has lon itudinal slots 18 which cooperate with guide pins 20 projecting from the back of the holder bar as best shown in Figure 4-. The locking bar is also 1 tion of the needles, beyond the shoulders 28,
have lateral slots 30 which form heads 32 projecting behind the locking bar as best illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. The locking bar has a T slot 14 for each needle and this produces an interlocking engagement between the locking bar and the shank of the needle. In other words, there is an interlocking engagement between the needle shanks and the two bars, and the needles may be firmly attached by first inserting the shanks through the apertures in the bar and then sliding the locking bar to locking position. The needles may, of course, be re leased by reversing the operation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
A surgical instrument of the class described having a needle having a shoulder near the end, a head at the end, and a slot between the shoulder and the head, a looking bar having an a pcrture for receiving the head portion of the needle beyond the shoulder, the shoulder being adapted to abut-the front of the holder bar, and a locking bar slidably mounted upon the back of the hold er bar and having a T slot, one portion of: which is large enough to pass the head of the needle, and the other part of which is narrowed for engaging the head of the needle to prevent it from being withdrawn from the holder bar.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto sub scribed my name.
BORIS BERKMANN.
