Description

April 12, 1932' G. RIGANTE COIL STRUCTURE Filed Aug- 21, 1931 slum Jquafney Patented Apr. 12, 1932 GIUSEPPE RIGAN TE, F WESTERLEIGH, STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK COIL STRUCTURE Application led August 21, '1931. Serial No. 558,596.
The present inventioni relates to new and useful improvementsin electrical devices, and more particularly it pertains to a coll structure.
It is the primary object of the invention to provide a new and novel construction of coil which will be simple in construction and easy of manufacture.
A further object of the invention resides in a new and novel means for supporting a coil in operative position.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel construction whereby the coil may be made of various d1- 7 ameters. 0
With the above and other obJects 1n view,
reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention in a .preferred fbrm, and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a coil constructed in accordance 'with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one portion of the coil, t
Figure 4; is a detail perspective vlew of another portion of the coil,
Figure 5 is a detail view in elevation, on a -f reduced scale illustrating one manner of supporting the coil,
Figure 6 is a similar View lllustrating another manner of supporting the coll, and;
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner in which the leads may be attached to the coil element.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the coil comprises an inner body member 10 and this body member is preferably of cylindrical cross sectional form and is elongated. The body 10 has radially extending spaced flanges 11 which extend longitudinally thereof as best illustrated in Figure 4. Extending longitudinally through the body 10 there is an opening 12, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The body 10 forms the means about which a coil of wire or suitable conducting material 13 is wound as best illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and thiscoil 13 may form one of the coils of an induction coil.
The reference character 15 designates end members which are preferably circular in form,` and have notches 16 formed in their 5., periphery. The end membershave centrall disposed openings17, and these openings lll are adapted to receive a bolt, rod or the like 18 lwhich extends through the passage 12 of A the body 10, and is provided with a suitable nut or the like 19 by whichthe lend members 15 may be secured to the body 10. f
Thel end members 15 are of larger diameter than the diameter of the bodymember 10, 'and l mounted in the notches'lG thereof,- there'. are 65 longitudinally extending bars or the like 25. These bars 25 are so shaped in cross sectional form as to be removably received Within the notches 16 and by reason of theincreased diameter of the end members 15 said'bars will 70 be mounted in spaced relation with respect to the coil 13 as indicated by the reference character 26 in Figure 2. The bars 25 form the means for supporting a second coil-"28 whichis wound therearound and said bars support the coil 28 in spaced relation with respect to the coil 13, as best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The end members 15 may be provided ..With a plurality of openings 30 through which-,the leads of the inner 80 and outer coils may be passed as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Thus it will be apparent that an induction coil of a simple construction is provided, it being understood that the body member 10, 8F the end members @15' and the bars 25 are forlnied from suitable non-conductingmateria.
When it is desired to produce a coil which A is circular in cross section, the bars 25 are 9U employed as illustrated in the drawings. If, however, it is desired to form a coil which is angular in cross section, alternate bars 25 maybe removed, and the outer coil 28 formed about half the number of bars illustrated in the drawings, in which case the outer coils would assume a square cross sectional shape.
The coil may be supported by the bolt or the like 18, and for this purpose a brack- 1" et 40 is employed. The bracket 40 comprises a bod portion 41 having two end members parent that the coil may be sup orted 1n Vzo either a horizontal lane as i lustrated in Figure 6, or in a vertical plane as illustrated in Figure 5, all by the same socket, merely by selective use of the openings 45 and 46.
In Figure 7 I have shown a slightly modilied form of connecting the leaves, and in this figure, the coils 13 and 28 terminate in binding posts or the like 50, and suitable leaves 51 are connected to these binding posts.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the 'present invention provides a new and novel construction of electric coil, and also that the invention .provides a new and novel means for supporting coils in electrical ap aratus. l
ile the invention has herein been illustrated in its preferred forms, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction herein shown, and that-it may be practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An electrical coil structure comprising a body member having longitudinally extending radial flanges, an electrical conductor wound around said body-member to form a coil, end pieces secured to said body member, longitudinally extending spaced bars carried by said end members and spaced from said body member, and an electrical conductor wound around said bars to form a coil.
2. An electrical coil structure comprising an elongated body member, radially disposed flanges extending longitudinally of said body member, end members, means for securing said end members to said body member, bars extending longitudinally of said body member in spaced relation thereto, and being removably carried by said end members, a coil formed about said body member, and a second coil formed about said bars.
3. An electrical coil structure comprising I an elongated body portion of substantially circular cross-sectional form, radially projecting flanges extending longitudinally of 'i said body portion, notched end members of an elongated body portion of substantially circular cross-sectional form, radially vprojecting ianges extending longitudinally of said body portion, notched end menbers of lar er dlameter than the diameter of the bo y (portion, means for securing said notche end members t0 the ends of the body ortion, said means including a bolt extending longitudinall7 through the body members, longitudina ly extending bars removably carried in the notches of the end mem bers, a'coil formed about thef'langes of the body member, and a second coil formed about the bars carried by the end members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GIUSEPPE RIGANTE.
