` 4The object of my invention is to provide an improved handle for matresses of the type employing an inner spring frame of simple and cheap construction which may be easily and quickly A further object of my'invention is to provide a handle so constructed and arranged that when applied to a mattress, the lifting strains will be distributed to the spring frame, at separated points, to relieve the mattress and its tick from Vstrains which would tend to pull the mattressout of shape and to Vcause it to become torn as the mattress is carried about or turned over.

A further object of Vmy invention is to provide a mattress handle and means for attaching the same to the spring frame of the mattress, so constructed and arranged that the handle anchoring means may be applied to the spring frame at the time the frame is constructed, and wherein the handle may be applied to its anchoring means at the time or after the mattress has been secured to the spring frame.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a small perspective View of a mattress showing the manner in which my improved A handles are applied thereto;

Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a side elevation of Figure 2, a portion being broken away on the line 3-3;

Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a perspective view of one end of the handle and one of the handle anchors attached thereto;

Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of handle. r

In the drawing I have used the reference numeral I to indicate the horizontal frame member, which is preferably in the form of a helix bounding the upper and lower faces of the spring structure Il, supported on the interior of the mattress, said spring structure including a series of vertically arranged helical springs I2 having their upper and lower ends tied transversely by helical members I3 which are interwoven in the springs I2 in the usual manner. The spring frame thus formed isprovided with the usual mattress covering I6 and the ticking I1, the said ticking l1 having 'pairs of grommets I8.

My improved handle comprises a body portion I9 having each end provided with a laterally projecting portion at substantially right angles to said body, the free ends of the portions 29 ter'- minating in hooks 2l, the hooks being arranged to be passed through the grommet I8.4

For fastening the handles to the spring frame I have provided for each of thehooks'ZI what I shall term an anchoring vdeviceV 22forme`d preferably of a wire having a loop portion 23 formed at its central portion and its ends supported. yin a diverging manner, the'free ends of the members 22 being preferably formed withv hook portions 2d. One of the hook portions 24 is adapted to be' fastened toone of the lateral upper frame vmembers [3 by placing the hook over said member, then twisting the free end of the hook around the member I3 and also the adjacent coils of two adjoining springs I2, the other hook member 24 being placed over a corresponding lower one of the members I3 and twisted around said member and the adjacent coils of the lower end of said springs I2, in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 4, the members 22 being of such length that the members 24 may be attached at points a considerable distance from the outer edges of "ie mattress with the loops 23 located near one of the grommets I8, each of the hooks 2I of the handle being provided with the anchor just described, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, each side of the mattress vusually being provided with two handles, each handle being located near the ends of the mattress so that lifting strains will be quite uniformly distributed to the spring frame.

In Figures 2l and 4 I have illustrated the members 24 being attached to the upper and lower frame members I3 in a common vertical plane.

However, if so desired, the members 22 might be supported in planes inclined relative to the vertical, wherein the loop portion 23 may be supported in one of the vertical planes, including the corresponding upper and lower `frame members I3, while one of the members 24 may be connected to a top frame member I3 to the right, as at A, while the bottom member 24 may be connected to the bottom frame member I3 to the left, as at B, illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to provide means for more widely distributing strains when lifting force is applied to the handle.

In Figure 6 I have illustrated a modified form of handle, comprising two rods 25 spaced apart and substantially parallel, said rods being brought together and twisted at points 26, the

ends of said rods being bent at right angles to the body formed by the members 25 and provided with the usual hooks 24. Efach corresponding pair of hooks 24 may then be inserted through corresponding grommets I8, the members 24 then being fastened to the frame members I3, as before described. The members 25 may then be provided with a metallic plate 21, or any other suitable handle such as wood or Bakelite might be applied, or the said members may be covered with fabric if so desired.

From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a mattress handle of comparatively simple construction having anchoring means of cheap construction, so arranged that the lifting strains applied to the handle may be applied to the spring frame at separated points so that the strain is more uniformly distributed over the frame, wherein the mattress may be carried about by the handles or turned over Without injury thereto.- In my'preferred form the anchor members 22 may be applied at theA time the spring frame is constructed, if so desired, or it may be applied after the frame has been constructed. and the handleapplied after or at the same time the ticking is being applied to the frame.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a device of the class described, a handle having a hook ateach end, a pair of anchors formed of U-shaped wires, each having a loop at its apex in a plane common to said wires and a hook formed at each of its free ends, the hooks of said handles being adapted to receive corresponding loops ofv said anchors wherein the anchors may rst have their free ends secured to the upper 'and lower frame members of a mattress spring by means of said hooks at spaced points with the Wires of each anchor in a plane inclined to the vertical, with the loop portions projecting outwardly, and wherein the hooks of said handle may pass through openings in a mattress tick and be connected to said loops whereby any force applied to said handle will be transferred to said spring frame at a number of separated points and within the border of said frame.

2. A mattress handle, comprising a handle and a pair of anchor members, each anchor member being formed of a V-shaped wire having a loop at its apex end and in a plane common to said wires, each of the free ends of said wires being adapted to be twisted Vabout the junction of two adjacent coil springs and the adjacent portion of the frame members supporting such springs,

with one end of said anchor connected to the upper adjoining portions of one set of springs and the other end of said anchor connected to the lower adjoining portions of another pair of springs, the other anchor being connected in the same manner to other pairsyof springs alternately with the rst pairs of springs, the loops of said anchors being projectedL outwardly and adapted to be in alinement withopenings in a mattress tick, each of said handles having a hook adapted to pass through said openings and enter corresponding loops of said anchors whereby any force applied to said handle will be transferred to said springs at a number of separated points and within the border of said frame.
