This invention relates to improvements in buckets and, more especially, an excavator bucket or shovel.
My invention is especially applicable in connection with the form or type of bucket now generally known as the Page bucket used in various kinds of excavating machines, such bucket usually being filled or loaded by dragging or drawing the same in a more or less horizontal or inclined position through the material to be dug. The bucket, after being filled or loaded, is ordinarily lifted by chains or cables supporting the bucket by trunnions on the side and then moved to dumping position whereupon the loading line is released, allowing the bucket to tilt on the trunnions and dump its contents.
Buckets of the character referred to are subjected to hard and rough usage and frequently dropped onto the ground with more or less impact.
Among the features of my invention is the construction of such a bucket that gives great rigidity, strength and durability with a minlmum cost and weight.
My bucket is also so constructed that portions thereof subjected to the greatest amount of wear or deterioration can be rather easily replaced.
Another feature of my invention is the construction of such a bucket employing cast portions in combination with suitable plates.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device embodying the fea tures of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a view taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the bottom rear end of the bucket; and Fig. 4 is a view taken as indicated by the line 4 of Fig. 1.

tom of the bucket is formed of a single casting, indicated in general by 10. This casting includes a fiat bottom portion 11 with side walls 12 and a curved rear wall 13..
The forward edge of the bottom portion 11 may be provided with any suitable digging teeth 14, forming no part of the present invention. Y
The upper edges of the sidewalls 12 are bifurcated or divided to form upwardly eX- tending separate vertical flanges, the inner of these being indicated by 15, and the outer, by 16. The upper edge of the curved rear wall 13 is likewise similarly divided to form an outer flange 16a and an inner flange 15a. It is to be understood that the flanges 16 on the sides merge with the flange 16a at the rear of the bucket, to form curved corners, and likewise the inner side flanges 15 merge with the rear flange 15a.
The sides and rear of the bucket (the front of the bucket is open) are formed by spaced plates, said plates forming a double wall. The inner of these plates is indicated by 17 and the outer, by 18. Each of these plates is bent around to form the side and rear walls of the bucket. The lower edges of these plates 17 and 18 are attached to the flanges 15 and 16 of the casting by means of rivets 19. Between the plates 17 and 18 are placed spacing members, here shown as I-beams 21 held in position by suitable rivets. The upper edges of the side walls and rear wall of the bucket are Y formed by cast channel members 22, 22, said members having an upper rounded edge or web` and depending flanges 22a, 22a lying between the upper edges of the'plates 17 and 18. The members 22 are held in position by suitable rivets 23. Y
The bottom rear portion of the bucket is protected and strengthened by removable shoes or wear plates. As here shown, there are three Aof these plates, two outer plates 24, 24, anda center plate 25. These plates vare provided with depending hollow ridges 26,
which accommodate ridges 27 cast on the bottom surface of the bottom portion l1 of the bottom cast member 10. The sides of this member are provided with curved projecting lugs l()a against which the forward ends of the shoes 24 butt. This engagement is afforded by the side portions 24a of the outer shoes or plates 24:, 24 which are curved upwardly a short distance at the sides of the bottom member 10.
The ridges or ribs 27 on the bottom member 10 are provided with cross-ridges 27a engaging suitable sockets in the shoes or wear plates 2a and 25 to assist in preventing longitudinal movement of the same on the bottom of the bucket. The shoes 24 and 25 are held in place by suitable rivets, indicated by 28, 28.
The forward edges of the side Walls of the bucket are closed by suitable castings 29 carrying hinged members 30 to which the loading line (not shown) is attached, eyes 80a being provided for such attachment. Numeral 31 may indicate trunnions for supporting the bucket, 82, the supporting chains and 83, the holding line, which assists in preventing the bucket from dumping when supported by the chains 32, all in accordance with the usual construction and operation of the Page bucket.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible, in View of the prior art.

A bucket of the character described, including; a cast bottom member, said member having separated flanges at the side and rear; spaced plates attached to said flanges to form the side walis and rear Wall of the bucket; and a closure member attached to the upper edges of said plates extending along the sides and across the rear of the bucket.
2. A bucket as claimed in claim 1, in which the spaced plates are held in spaced position and strengthened by spacing members ar- 5 ranged between the same.

A bucket as claimed in claim 1, inl which the cast bottom member is provided with longitudinal ribs, in combination with removable shoes or wear plates adapted for at tachment to the bottom rear portion of the cast bottom member, said shoes or wear plates being provided with grooves adapted to ac- ,cgommodate the ridgeson the bottom mem- 4;.
