Pam-ta; Aug. 25, 193i UNITED STATES PATE T] OFFICE? if :enonen THOMPSON, 01 ERIE, rnnnssrnvnnis, ASSIGNOR To a. H. WILLIAMS COMPANY, or ERIE, rimnsiztvnman CORPORATION PENNSYLVANIA DRAG LINE BUCKET Application filed June 26,1928. Serial No. 288,360.
Drag line buckets have ordinarily been formed of sheet plate. It is desirable to have the center of gravity comparatively low in the bucket. It is also necessary, or desirable, that the side walls of the bucket be suf- 5 liciently braced to prevent collapsing under the strain of the pulling bail chains and that the bucket as a whole as compared to its strength he comparatively light. The in- 10 vention is directed tothe improvement of the bucket along these lines. Features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of the bucket.
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 asection on the lines 3 -3 in Figs. l and 4. V
F1 l a'section on the line 14: 1n Fi 1. m b
Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 in Fig. 1. The bucket walls are formed of a sheet metal plate forming the bottom 1 and side 5 walls 2 bent up from the bottom. A flanged end plate 3 is secured within the rear edges of the side plates and bottom plate. The side'plates are braced by re-enforcing plates 4. These extend from the front of the bucket to the shackle plates 5 to which dump chains 6 are secured. A lip plate 7, preferablygof .caststeel, is secured under the bottom 1 and extends up along the sides and forward of the lip. The lip plate has the cutting edge 8. A shoulder 9 receives the front edge of the bottom plate 1.- Teeth 10 are secured over the lip plate and have the rearwardly extending shanks 11 which are secured to the lip plate and bottom plate and at the rear are secured to skid plates, or bars 12 which extend forwardly to the rear edge of the lip plate 7 and are arranged under the rear of the shanks 11 and extend up the rear of the bucket bracing the rear. The lip plate is notched onits inner face at 13 to' receive the re-enforcing plate 4. Hitch plates 14 are arranged outside the re-enf0rcing plate 4 and in advance of the forwardly extending portion of the lip plate. A bridge 15 extends over the front part of the bucket. This'is formed of a single casting. It has thetran sverse ribs 16 extending from side to side of he bucket and these are joined by 1ong'itudi nal ribs 17 connecting the ribs 16. The sides of the bridge extend, downwardly within the side walls 2, the side Walls having the upper edges at the front extending over the bridge piece a 2a and secured theretobyrivets 18. The lower ed 'e of the bridge overlaps the lip plate 7 and the hitch plate 14,
A patch plate 19 extends over and overlaps the lip plate and thehitch plate'and is socured, by rivets which extend through the patch plate, the lipplate, the re-enforcing plate, the hitch plate, and the bridge, thus" tying all these plates-together. A ribbed j cheek pl ate-20 issecured over the; patch plate this ribbedcheek plate having an integral rib 21, the purposeof whichisto stiffen the sides p carrying the bridging efl ect ofthe lip'plate forward to the hitch plate.
Pull bail. chains 22 extend from the hitch v plate to a pull bail socket fitting 23 to which a cable 23a is attached and a cabl'eQ i extends fromthe fitting 23 over a sheave 25 tojthe bridge, being secured to the brie ge by a titting 25a. A sheave block 26 is connected by apin 26a to a hoist fitting 27, the chai n 6 also'bei'ng connected to the pin 26a.
With this structure, the bridge being formed of a steel casting and particularly ribbed as it is within makes it possible to form this bridge with greater stiffness and with less weight than with a built-up fabric.
By overlapping the bridge with the different plates at the sides of the bucket it is tied in with these parts and strengthens them. By utilizing a cast lip plate it can benotched to a receive the re-enforcing plates andv by rib-- hing the sides of the bucket the rigidity of the lip plate may be carried forward toward the hitch plate.
What I claim as new is 1. A dragline bucket comprising a body 1 and side walls of sheet metal, a bridge joining the side walls formed of cast metal, said bridge being ribbed and extending down the inside of the side walls; a lip plateextending along the bottom and up the sides overlapping the bridge; and rivets extending through the bridge, side and lip plate.
2. A drag line bucket comprising a body and side Walls of sheet metal, a bridge joining the side Walls formed of cast metal, said bridge being ribbed and extending down the inside of the side walls, a re-enforcing plate on each side wall, a lip plate of cast metal having a notch. at each side receiving the reenforcing late, said lip plate and bridge plate over apping, and rivets extending through the lip plate, re-enforcing plate, side wall and bridge at each side of the bucket.
3. A drag line bucket comprising a body and side walls of sheet metal, a bridge joining the side walls formed of cast metal, said bridge being ribbed and extending down the inside of the side Walls, a lip plate extending along the bottom and up the sides overlapping the bridge, a hitch plate at each side of the bucket in advance of the lip plate, a patch plate outside and overlapping the lip plate. and hitch plate at each side of the buckat, and rivets extending through the patch plate, lip and hitch plates, side and. bridge at each side of the bucket.
4. A drag line bucket comprising a body and side Walls of sheet metal, a bridge joining the side Walls formed of cast metal, said bridge being ribbed and extending down the inside of the side walls, a. lip plate extending along the bottom and up the sides overlapping the bridge, a hitch plate at eachside of the bucket in advance of the lip plate, a patch plate outside and overlapping the lip plate and hitch plate at each side of the bucket, rivets extending through the patch plate, lip and hitch plates, side and bridge, and a ribbed cheek plate extending along each patch plate and overlapping each hitch plate and lip plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE F. THOMPSON.
