Description
April 5, 1932. l. PEYsr-:R ET AL LIFT ROD HANDBAG LOCK Filed NOV. 18. 1931 Patented Apr. 5, 1932 LUNITED STATES PATE-Nn vFl'flfcr:
LIFT non HANDBAG Loox Application filed November 18, 1931. Serial No. 575,708.
The invention is a clasp for hand bags or the like which forms a positive lock and in which all of the parts are on the exterior of the bag and exposed.
i The object of the invention is to provide an exposed clasp for hand bags or the like which forms a positive lock until it is manually released.
Another object is to provide a hand bag lock in which the locking member is attached to one side of the frame and encircles the other side so that it will`hold even though the clasp may release.
Another Objectis to provide a hand bag clasp which is formed on the exterior of the bag and which is ornamental.
A further object is to provide a hand bag clasp in which the holding member is raised to release the clasp. Y
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a positive locking and exposed claspfor hand bags or the like which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a -rod pivotally attached to one side of the frame of a hand bag and adapted to be placed over the other side and a clasp for locking said rod in the position of holding the bag closed.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing a side elevation of the hand bag with the rod held in the clasp.
Figure 2 is an end elevation showing the upperv edge of the hand bag with the locking members as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing an alternate arrangement in which the locking members are positioned upon the upper edge of the bag frame.
Figure 4 is also a similar view showing a cross section thru the bag frame and a clasp of an alternate design.
Figure 5 is a similar sectionshowing a clasp of another alternate design.
with parts omitted showing the reverse side `will raise it upward over the upper edge of Figure 6 is a view of one corner of the bag of the bag as shownin Figure 1, in which a plain bearing is used for attaching the rod tothe bag frame.A e Y n Figure 7 "s a similar view showing the opposite corner of the bag with partsjomitted Vand also showing the reverse side of the bag as shown inFigure 1, showing an alternate design in which a spring is used in the bearing for raising the rod as it is released from the clasp. Y
In the drawings the device is shown as it would be made wherein numeral l indicates the rod, numeral 2 the clasp, and numeral 3 a hand bag.
The rod 1 is Vshown as formed ofa round piece of material, however it may be made of any shape and bent to any design. In the design shown 'it is made with a straight portion 4 with the ends 5 bent at'right angles around the endsof the bag frame vand held in bearings 6, as shown in Figure 6. Plain hearings may be `used for the rod as shown Vin Figure 6 or the bearings may also be pr0- vided with springs `7 as shown in Figure 7 in which one end of the. spring is held in, a notch 8 in the bearing and the other in a notch '9 in the endof the rod 1 so thatl as soon as the rod is released from the clasp the springs the bag frame. The springs may be' used'in 0 both of the bearings, or in only one bearing, lo 'r may be omitted as shownin Figure 6 and the rod raised by hand. It will be understood that any other means may be used for raising lthe rod as it is released, or for snapping it over the 7^bag vframe, and the raising means may be located at any other point or v points orarranged in any other manner.
v Y The clasp 2, as shown in Figures 1 and 2,
is hinged to the frame 10 ofthe hand bag at 90 the point 11 and hangs downward as shown. This clasp is provided with a raised portion or lug 12 over which the rod snapsto the position, as shown in Figure `2, in which it is locked downward to hold the bag'closed, and 95 'when itis desired to open the bag the clasp may be raised' by the lower endso that the rod will be snapped over the top of the bag.y The rod may also be snapped or sprung over the lug 12 by hand if desired, and the lug is provided with a lug 15 on the upper sur-v face thereof over which the rod" snapsv as shown, and it will be noted that the clasp may be raised to release the rod or the rod may be'snappedover the lug as desired.
In the design shown in Figure 4 the clasp is formed with a hook member 16v under which the' rod snaps, and a spring locking member 17 whichy locks the rod in the clasp and which may be pressed inward topermit therod to` be sprung out. vThis design provides an interna-l lock or locking socket and it4 willbe under-'stood that an internal vlock or socket of any other design may be used.
The clasp shown in Figure 5 isforined with ay springing 18. a housing 19., and a button 20 is provided to press the lug 18'inwardto release the rod. It will be understood that a spring lug of an57 other type` or design. may be used., .and it may be mounted in any other type of housing or clasp, and any other means may he used for operating the lug to release the rod. The lug may also. be replaced by any othermeans for holding the rod and the holding means may be held tothe frame in any desired manner; y l
Itwill be understood thatA other changes may be made in the con-struction Without departing from` the Aspirit of the. invention. .One of which changes may be in use of the locking device withl a bag of any other type or design, or with any other device. Another may be the locating of anyof thepparts in orv upon rany other posi-tion uponthe bag, another may .be in the use of any other holding means in placer of the rodi 1, another may v.he in the use of any other holding 'means in place -o-f theHcla-sp 2, :and still. another'may be in ther use of any numberY of the clasps instead of `only one as shown.
The construction will be readily understood` from 'the foregoing' description. In use the parts may be provided as shown and the rod may beplaced over the upper part 'of the bag frame land snapped in the clasp to close or'lock the bag, and when it is'desired to open the bag theclasp may be raised or the rod released therefrom, and when springs are usedgin the bearings, the springs will 'raise the rod so that the bag may be opened or the rod 'may be rraised bythe clasp or by Vhand as desired.
Having thus fully described the invention Y of a bag and adapted to pass over and around the other, and a plate hinged on said other side of the bagwith a projection for holding saidy rod, said plate adapted to be raised to release said rod.
2. A. lock for hand bags or the like comn prising a rod attached to one side of a bag frame and adapted to pass over and around the upper end of the other side, and means on said other side for holding said rod, said rod adapted to spring over said holding means.. f c n y 3. A lockfe'r hand bags orthe like coinprisingl a rod attached to one side of a` bag kand adapted to pass over and around the upper part of the other side and means: on said other side for holding said rod, saidy holding means' adapted to be raised torelease said rod and said rod adapted to springover said holding` means;
. s 4. In a hand baglock of the characterfdef 'f90 scribed, a rodpivotally attached toV one side of a bag. and adapted to pass .over and around he upper part of the other. side, means for resiliently raising said rod., and a clasp on the other side of the bag for holdingsait l"9;5
rod. l v a 5. Ina hand bag lock ofthe. character described, a rod pivotally attached to one side of a bag and adapted to passover and around the upper part of the other side, a spring po'- '.160
si-tioned at the point at which the rod ispivotally attachedV for raising said. rod., and a clasp on the other side of 'saidbag forholding said rod with the bag closed.
6. In a hand bag holding,` device of the' 105 character described., a rod moiuitedr on one side of the bag andi adapted toV pass over and around the' upper part of the Lother side, bear@ ings in whichthe rod is pivotally mounted,
springs in said bearings for holding said rodi il() upward, `and a clasp on said` other `side of the bag for holding said rod. i
7. In a hand bag locking device, a rod pivotally mounted on oneside of a bag; and
adapted to pass over and around the upper edge of the bag, a clasp mountedY onsaid other .side of the bag, and alug on said clasp for holding said rod, said rod adapted to spring over said rod to lock said bag.
In testimony whereof we aiii'xvour. signa- 129 tures.`
