This invention relates to cartons, but more particularly to cartons for containing butter, oleomargarine, or similar substances.

The public is demanding more and more that they see the goods which they are purchasing instead of merely taking for grant ed that the package contains the substance or material of the quality they desire. As a result, numerous window cartons are being used to show the contents. These are of advantage, because, although they disclose the contents of the package, they do not permit handling of the same.

An object of this invention is to produce a package for butter, oleomargarine, or the like, which is hermetically sealed, but is constructed to enable the purchaser to see the contents.

Further objects will hereinafter appear, and the invention is shown by way of illustration, and not of limitation, in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional elevation of a package or carton of butter, oleomargarine, or the like;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1.

The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a carton 1 of substantially cup shape having an open upper end. The inner and outer walls are covered with a coating 2 of paraffin, or some similar material, to render the carton impervious to moisture, and to protect the contents. It will be observed that in this instance the side walls of the carton incline outwardly from the bottom so that the opening in the top is considerably wider than the area of the bottom. The bottom wall and a portion of the side walls are covered by a lining 3 of sheet material, such as relatively light flexible parchment paper. The lining 3 may be held to the bottom and side walls of the carton in any suitable manner, but in the preferred form the sheet material is placed within the carton,

and by the application of heat the parafin coating of the body 1 is fused to secure the lining in place.

B represents a cake or bar of butter, oleomargarine, or some similar substance, and in this instance the material is in substantially loaf shape. The cake B is covered by flexible sheet material 4, such as parchment paper, which is translucent. As shown, the cover sheet 4 extends a substantial distance down the sides of the cake B, and then is folded substantially upon itself in overlapping relationship with the lining 3, the edgeportions of the sheet 4 contacting with the side walls of the body 1 above the terminus of the lining as well as keeping the cake free from dirt, etc. mi

The edges of the side walls of the body 1 are bent outwardly at substantially right angles to provide a flange 5, this'flange being similarly coated with parafiin or like substance 6. Ulosing the open end of the carton is a sheet 7 of suitable translucent or transparent flexible sheet material, which overlies the cover sheet 4, and is adhesively attached to the flange 5, as by fusing the paraffin coating, thereby providing further seal for the contents of the carton. It will be apparent that the sheet 7 permits inspection of the contents of the carton so that the prospective purchaser can at least observe the color and texture of the material contained therein.

It is to be understood that although the above described embodiment is of cup shape with flaring walls, numerous changes in size, shape and proportions of the carton may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Other changes also may be made in the material, coating, etc., without departing from the invention, especially as defined in the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A carton for butter or the like composed of a cup-likebod having an open top, a translucent member ormed to extend over the butter or the like and having its marginal portions doubled upon themselves and secured to the adjacent Walls of the body and a transparent cover member extending over the open top of the body and secured to the latter at points spaced above the points of securement of the translucent member.

2. A carton for butter or the like composed of a cup-like body having an open top, a transparent closure extending over said open top of the body and secured at its marginal ortions thereto, and a translucent member beneath the closure member and having its marginal portions extended downwardly at an angle and secured to the adjacent walls of the body at points beneath the points of se- 7 curement of the closure member to the body.

3. A carton. for butter or the like composed of a cup-like body having an open top, a transparent closure extending over said open top of the body and-secured at its marginal portions to the top of the body, and a translucent member beneath the closure member having its marginal portions extended downwardly and secured to the bounding walls of the body at points spaced below and spaced inwardly from the points of securement of the closure member to the body.

4. A carton for butter or the like composed of a cup-like body having an open top, a transparent closure member formed to extend over the open top of the body and being secured thereto, and a translucent member underlying the closure member and having depending portions provided with laterall extending parts which latter are dispose be tween the butter or the like and the adjacent side walls of the body and are secured to the latter.

5. A carton for butter or the like composed of a cup-like body having an open top, a lining covering the bottom of the body and engaged with the marginal walls thereof and terminating below the tops of said walls, a translucent member formed to over-lie the butter and having depending substantially V-shaped parts the outer sides of which latter are secured to the lining and extend thereabove and are engaged with the adjacent bounding walls of the body, and a transparent closure member over-lying the first named transparent member and secured to the top of the body.
