Description
March 29, 1932. F. WATANABE INVENTOR/ FuKAoK T 24 By HisA'rTv:

v [in Patented Mar. '29, 1932 i STATES FUKAOKU WATANAIBE,OF HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA ADVERTISING :onvicn Application filed October 7, 1930. Serial No. 486,978
This invention relates to improvements in an advertising device, and its objects are toprovide elements of simple and eficient construction, capable of motion and driven by the slightest movement of the air or wind, and adapted for displaying advertising, matter on both sides thereof, and alternately t0 the observer. 7
Another object is to provide a device of the character set forth which is well adapted for use as a toy.
To accomplish these and other objects I provide a base or standard, on which is mounted a freely movable and vertically disposed shaft, carrying elements displaying the advertising matter, and provided with opposed weights whereby the device may be adjusted to a perfect balance for free rotary movement thereof. b l
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of thedevice. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the central shaft. Fig. 3 is a side view with balancing weight with a part of the bow frame shown in section. Fig. a is a perspective view of the shield detached from the supporting shaft,
and shows a side adapted for carrying the advertising matter; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan,
view of the advertising shield. Fig. 6 isa detail view of a modified form of the bow frame, adapted for the larger sizes of the devlce.
Referring in detail to the drawings, a
standard 7 having a relatively broad base 8, is provided with a central depression 9, at the top, in which is mounted a vertically disposed central; shaft 10, havin a pointed metaltip 11 at its lower end, andiaving the notches 12 therein, adapted to receive the resilient bow member 18. Member 13 has loops 14 and 15 therein, and a central loop 16 adapted toengage with a notch 12 in the central supporting shaft 10. A relatively small wire element 17 5 is wound around the central shaft and has its extremities 18 wound around and engaging in the loops 15, of how member 13. The exweights 22, which are slidable to adjust the bow member for balancing thereof. I provide a paper fabric shield 23, adapted to be mounted on the central shaftand bow mem her, the shield having at the .top a central aperture 24 to receive the central shaft, and having suitable pins 25, whereby it is secured to the extremities of the bow member.
. In use, the shield 23 is provided with the advertising matter (not shown) printed or, 6G. otherwise placed on the sides thereof. v The shield is then placed upon the bow member 13, with shaft 10 extending through the top aper-' ture 24. The weights are then'shifted on the bow member to balance the same. After the device is properly. balanced, the slightest movement of the air is suflicientto cause it to turn, thereby alternately exhibiting the sides to the observer. H
For large and extra large sizes of thedevice, 7 0 I provide the bowmemb'erwith a modified form, consisting of a central-tubular portion, comprising tube 26, with slotted extremities 27, adapted to receive .wire members (not shown) similar to the extremities of bow member 13. The tube slots have angular extremities 28 to limit the wire members in position.
From the foregoing description and drawings, it may be seen that I have provided'an' Q attractive and efiicient advertising device, all made of light weight elements, and capable of being agitated by the slightest movement of the air.
metal pivot point allows the bow member to "f 7 turn freely in central socket 9. The device may be quickly dismounted and. packed in small space for transportation. v The device is well adapted for use as a moving toy, and may have thereon a shield with attractive colors and pictures. v V m What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a standard having a recessed top, of a shaft vertically disposed and mounted in said recessed top, and
having notches in the upper end thereof, a bow member secured to said shaft, a tie wire Wrapped around the central shaft and having its extremities secured to the bow member, a shield adapted to display advertising I'natter thereon, and mounted on the shaft and bow member, and balancing weights disposed on the extremities of the bow member.
2. The combination with a standard, of a shaft vertically disposed and independently l5 rotatable and mounted on the standard, a
bow member carried by the vertically disposed shaft and secured thereto, a shield adapted to display advertising matter and mounted on the shaft and bow member, means for securing the shield in position, and balancing weights on the outer extremities of the bow member.
3. The combination With a supporting standard having a recessed top portion, of a shaft vertically disposed and independently rotatable and mounted in said recessed end of the standard, a bow member secured to the shaft, an advertising shield mounted on the bow member and shaft, and means for balancing the shaft and elements carried thereby.
4. The combination with a supporting standard, of elements mounted thereon and independently rotatable relative thereto, and
85 including a bow member with projecting extremities, balancing weights slidable on the said extremities, and a shield adapted for display advertising mounted on the rotatable elements.
5. The combination with a supporting standard, of independently rotatable elements mounted thereon, means for balancing the rotatable elements, and an advertising shield carried by the rotatable elements.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
