Description

March 29, 1932.
W. J. BUEHRING CABLE GRIP Filed Dec. 14, 1931 [Il b1 Patented Mar. 29, 1932v A1151811f'lao srATas ginkxrlsarr oFF-ica WILLIAM J. BUEHRING, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS i CABLE. GRIP Application inea4 December 14, 1931.k lseriai' No. 580,753. l
My invention relates to cabler grips of thek split sleeve type such for example vas are shown in the United States patent to Whaley No.1,769,479. Y
It istheprincipal purpose of this invention to provide a gripofthis character with a novel means whereby the same may be utii 15. single hooks or clips fastened to one side and hooking into the other side. So long as a few wires and 'not too strong a grip is required so that about a dozen hooks is all that needbe used, that is. quite satisfactory. However,r
when thiscable grip is adapted to work ref quiring a stronger grip and a much greater strength, a considerably greater number of wires must be used and this rapidly increases the number of loopswhich must be hooked to gether. Furthermore, the wires yare closer together in the stronger grips which does not Vmake them any easier to hook. p
This invention contemplates the provision of a novel hooking device whereby the num ber of hooking operations ynecessary to connect together the two sides of the split sleeve Y is reduced to less than one-half the total number of loops on either side of the split sleeve. i I will describe the preferred form of my invention by reference to the accompanying drawings whereinf Fig.y 1 is a side `view'of a grip as applied to a cable;l n y Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the hook employed showinglhow it is engaged with a loopyby a simple tool.- y
Referring nowv in detail to the drawings, the numeral 3 refers to 'a Ycable of common `form. The grip 4 is madeup as in the prior patent mentioned, of a plurality of strands',V
offwirev such as 5, 6, 7 ,and 8` which strands are inclined with respect to the axis of the body so that they pass helically from the one edge 9 tothe other edge. 10 and back. At one end the strands are attached together in pairs as indicated at 11 while atthe other end they are'united to form the hand grips. 12 and 13,
Inforder to connect` the opposite loops along the two `side Vedges 9k and 10 of thersplit sleeve, I yprovide the, members 141" which, as, shown 55 most clearly by Fig; 2, consist of metal plates having along the yone side'edgejl` a plurality of hooked projections 16,17, and `18 vwhile on` theopposite sidea single .hook 191s provided,
this single hook 19 being somewhat heavier 60l than lthe hooks v16, 17, and 18. In practice, the small hooks'l, 17 and 18 are permanent ly attached toy l the loops asindicated vin Fig.
11, andthe plates 14 are alternately attached rto opposite sides ofthe` 'split sleeveV inthe 65V 'fashion shownin Fig. 1; .p l
It' isibelieved'p'to he clear` from the above descrip'tionV andthe illustrationlthat in lacing up thesleeve l it is necessaryto make only one hookv 19A hookinto its corresponding loopk 70 20 for eachthree loops when counted lengthwiseof the sleeve.V p Y l y. However," when the ends ofthe sleeve are approached, it is necessary ,to provide ayspei cial type of hook so thatthe two end loops such for example as 21 and v22 in Fig. 1 Ywill be fastened together.. This, special type ofy connecting hook vis shown at 23 and includes thetwo permanent fastenings 24 and 25 similar toV 16V withthe hook member 26 similar to 50 19. As shown,v two of these types ofhooks are used, and inf'addition :a single hook 27 similar to thatv shown; in they patent isA femyployed Yat' the hand grip' end of the sleeve.
This hook`27-may be dispensed with if de- S5 sired.y *y v` From the above description, it islbelieved to bef'clear that thenovell means of `hooking the split sleevetogether effects a considerable-j sav'ingiln the amount of time and work necessary to fasten or to unfasten the sides of the sleeve.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cable grip having a body portion consisting of a split sleeve composed of strands so interlaced as to form a series of loops at each longitudinal edge thereof, hook members for securing the opposite edges of said sleeve together, said hook members being connected to more loops on one side edge than on the other.
2. In a cable grip having a body portion consisting of a split sleeve composed of strands so interlaced as to form a series of loops at each longitudinal edge thereof, hook members for securing the opposite edges of said sleeve together, said hook members being connected to a plurality of said loops on one side edge and having a loop receiving member for engaging a loop on the other side edge of said sleeve.
3. In a cable grip having a body p ortion consisting of a split sleeve composed of strands so interlaced as to form a series of loops at each longitudinal edge thereof, hook members for securing the opposite edges of said sleeve together, said hook members being connected to a plurality of said loops on one side edge and having a loop receiving member for engaging a loop on the other side edge of said sleeve, alternate hook members being attached to opposite side edges of said sleeve.
4. In a cable grip having a body portion consisting of a split sleeve composed of strands so interlaced as to form a series of loops at each longitudinal edge thereof, hook members for securing the opposite edges of said sleeve together, said members each comprising a connecting plate having a plurality of loops of one side edge of said sleeve slidably hooked thereto at spaced points along the edge thereof and having a hook for engaging a single loop on the other side edge of said sleeve. n
5. In a cable grip having a body portion consisting of a split sleeve composed of strands so interlaced as to form a series of loops at each longitudinal edge thereof, hook members for securing the opposite edges of said sleeve together, said members each comprising a connecting plate having a plurality of loops of one side edge of said sleeve slidably hooked thereto at spaced points along the edge thereof and having a hook for engaging a single loop on the other side edge of said sleeve, each of said plates being connected opposite to the adjacent plates whereby all of said loops are connected to plates.
6. -In a cable grip having a body portion consisting of a split sleeve composed of strands so interlaced as to form a series of loops at each longitudinal edge thereof, hook WILLIAM J. BUEHRING.
