UNITED STATES SL'BUBO I. MORIYA, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE MATCH BOOK Application filed June 11,
This invention, relates to improvements in book matches, and more particularly to the forming of a compressible walled slot at the base of the book-having oppositely disposed 5 match striking surfaces between which a match will be inserted, and the sad walls slightly compressed, after which the match will be quickly withdrawn from the slot with a consequenti niting of the same.
An object o the invention is to-provide an improved form of match book in which a compressible 'slot is formed having its opposite surfaces covered with a match igniting materal, whereby a match ma be inserted therein and ignited by with rawal therefrom, without 'any chance of igniting the remainder of the matches in the book as 1s often the case in the usual .form of book matches. 1
90 Another object of the invention is to provide an improved match book having spaced rows of matches positioned therein, and the formation of a compressible igniting slot on the lower outside surface of the book in which the matchesmay be inserted and withdrawn to ignite the same.
vA still further object of to provide an improved match book w1th a plurality of spaced rows of matches, and.
.With an external reinforced compressible match igniting slot for positively and safely igniting the matches afterthe same have" been removed from the book.-

accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts. 7 y
In carrying out my invention, I provide a match book 1 comprising a back 2havin aflap 3 secured thereto and movable towar s and away from the same. The base of the back 2 is looped to form a W-shape portion having spaced slots 4 in which two rows of safety matches are securely held by the clips 5, and extend in substantially parallel relation with the said back. The intermediate striking slot 6 is opened away from the match book and formed by .the ad acent sides of the match holding slots 4. Strips of match igniting material 7 are secured to the opposite walls of the slot 6 in s 'aced relation and are spaced with respect tot e inner portion or bottom of the slot, so that a match may be detached from the book, the flap closed, and the match head inserted-within the slot 6 beyond the strips" of igniting material. A sli ht pressure of the fingers on the opposite si es of the book at the base thereof will be efiected, and the match stem pulled quickly out of the slot 6. Thus, it will be seen that there will be some momentum gained in the first movement of the withdrawal of the match before the head thereof comes in contact. with the igniting material, after which the match will be ignited as it leaves the confines of the igniting s 0t.
It will be'apparent that. the folds in the I bottom of the-match book will cause the flap -3 to normally be quite securely retained within the locking groove when the book is closed. The double row of matches in the book will give suificient bulk to the book to provide for.
a firm grasping of thesame when a match has been inserted within the igniting slot prior to its being withdrawn.
Many minor changes in detail of construction may resorted to without' departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus 'described my invention what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A match book comprisin a cover member, a luralityof compressib e slots formed in the ase thereof,-the outermost slots opening towards the interior of said cover memher and the intermediate slot opening in the opposite direction therefrom, spaced rows of matches supported within said outermost slots, and match striking strips secured to the b opposite walls of said intermediate slot in spaced relation to the bottom of said slot.
2. A match book comprising 'a cover member, a plurality of compressible slots formed in the base thereof, matches received within the outermost slots, and match striking stri s secured to the opposite sides of the interme iate slot in spaced relation to its opposite ends.
3. A match book comprising a cover member having a foldable flap closure, a compressible W-shape fold in the base thereof, matches carried in the outermost portions of said fold, match igniting surfaces on the inner portion of said fold, and means for holding said flap in closed position. :to In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
