Description

W. NANGEL & H. J. & E. J. LANGSH'AW.
' TRUNDLE-TOY.
No.184,889. Patented Nov. 28, 187.
UNITED STATES WALTER NANGEL, HUGH J. LANGSHAW, AND EDMUND J. LANGSHAW, OF
PHILADELPHIA,
PATENT OFFICE.
PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNDLE-TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,889, dated November 28, 1876,; application led September 15, 1876.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER NANGEL, HUGH J. LANGsHAw, and EDMUND J. LANG- SHAW, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have in-` vented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Toys; and we do hereby declare the followspecicaticin in which is a perspective view of our invention.
.This invention has relation to toys; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, whereby a number of colored rods and cylinders are made to revolve, and at the same time a bell is rung, thus producing a new and novel toy, which is pleasing to the eye and ear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A represent two wheels running 011 the ground and attached to either end of an axle, B. This axle is provided with a tongue, b, for the purpose of drawing or propelling the saine. Attaehed to the axle, pear the driving-wheels A, are two upright rods, C G, on which revolve two disks, E E, the edges of said disks resting on the driving-wheels A A, and receiving a rotary motion therefrom. These disks are connected with two similar ones on the upper p art of the rods G C by smaller and shorter rods c c. Resting on top of the upper disks, and receiving motion therefrom, is a solid cylin drical block, F, having axles f f, which work in slots d d in the upper ends of the rods C C. Extending out from the center of the cylinder /F are several arms, t' i, forming a reel, and having suspended from their ends balls t t', which strike successively a bell, bf, fixed on the axle B. The several rods and disks are to be painted in various colors and in any suitable manner.
The operation of this invention is as follows: Motion being communicated to the Wheels A A, (by drawing the toy along the ground,) is by them transmitted to the lower disks, through the rods c c to the upper disks, and from them to the cylinder F, causing the same with its arms to revolve, the buttons t' on the ends of the rods striking successively the bell b', and causing the same to ring.
We do not claim'as our invention the rolling toy comprising the reels E, axle B, wheels A A, and shaft F, as we recognize in the patent of R. Went, February l5, 1870, an anticipation of such a toy. Our improvement has reference merely to the combination, with the parts above enumerated, ofa bell and striker, which render the toy more attractive and saleable.
We claim- The combination, with the toy comprising the axle B, wheels AA, reels E E, and armed shaft or roller F, of the bell b and striker i', substantially as described and shown.l
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 31st day of August, 1876.
