When it. is desired to setthehrahe, thebrake lever may be pulled outwardly, and this will? operate through the arms 14 and the link 15 to force the connected end of the corresponding brake band toward the other end thereof which is anchored against movement by the corre- 5 sponding arms 18 and will operate to contract the band and grip it around the corresponding brake surface 10. The rollers 20 operate on said arms, as a track which is disposed, relative to the brake surface 10, so as to force the corresponding end of the brake band closely against said brake surface. The brake surface will accordingly be securely gripped by the band substantially throughout the area thereof and a greater area of ipping surface with the band will thus e attained.
Splined on the respective ends of the shaft 8 are the clutch jaws 24, 25 which confront the corresponding clutch jaws 26, 27 into which the outer ends of the hubs of the respective sprocket wheels 6 and 7 are formed. These sprocket wheels are driven from the corresponding wheels 4 and 5 through suitable sprocket chains (not shown) operating over them, the wheel 6 being driven at a greater rate of speed than the wheel 7. Upstanding arms 28 and 29 are pivoted at their lower ends to the derrick floor and their upper ends are formed with the conventional yo es 30, 31 which are connected to and adapted to actuate the corresponding clutch jaws 24, 25. There is a transverse shaft 32 rotatably mounted in suitable bearings carried by the derrick floor fixed to one end of 5 which is a pedal arm 33 whose free end is formed into a foot pedal 34. Fixed to the other end of the shaft 32 is an upstanding arm 35 and the free end of this arm is connected to the arm 29 through a reach rod 36. By depressing the pedal 34 the clutch jaw 25 may be moved into engagement with the clutch jaw 27 and the shaft 8 and the drum 9 thereon will thereby be rotated. When the pedal 34 is released the arm 29 will be actuated to release the clutch jaw 25 from clutch jaw 27 through the pull spring 37 one end of which is attached to the arm 29 and the other end of which is connected to the outer end member of the frame 2.
Disposed underneath the shaft 9 and extending transversely thereof there is a shaft 38 which is mounted to rotate in suitable bearings carried by the derrick floor. Fixed to one end of this shaft 38 there is a pedal arm 39 whose free end is formed into a pedal 40 and fixed to the other end of the shaft 38 there is an upstanding arm 41. There is a shift rod 42 one end of which has an upstanding bracket 43 fixed thereon whose free end is over turned and arranged adjacent the arm 41 and these adjacent parts have a plurality of aligned bolt holes as 44 to receive a suitable bolt at 45 to form a pivotal connection between the arm 41 and the bracket 43. The other end of the shift rod 42 has an upstandin bracket 46 havin an overturned end w ich lies adjacent t e arm 28 and these adjacent bearings have the ali ed bolt holes 47 to receive a bolt 48 throu h which the bracket 46 and the arm 28 may pivotally connected together. When the pedal 40 is depressed it will operate through the shift rod 42 to carry the clutch jaw 24 into engagement with the clutch jaw 26 and the drum 9 will be correspondingly turned. When said pedal is released the clutch jaw 24 will be released from the jaw 26 through the pull of the spring 49 one end of which is connected to the bracket 43 and the other end of which is attached to the derrick floor. It is obvious that the range of movement of the clutch jaw 24 may be varied b changing the location of the bolt 45 or o the bolt 48, or both of them, with reference to the corresponding bolt holes 44 and 47.
While I have shown what I now consider to be the preferred form of the invention it is obvious that mechanical changes may be made therein and equivalents substituted for the parts shown and I reserve the right to make such changes and substitutions as may be found desirable within the principle of the invention.
What I claim is 1 1. In draw works having a cable winding drum provided with a brake surface; a brake band around said surface, a brake shaft, an arm fixed on said shaft, a link connected to said arm and to one end of said band, said arm and link having a joint connection, a bearing associated with said end of said brake band, an anchor arm having a track substantially concentric with said brake surface and on which said bearing rides, said anchor am having one end attached to the other end of said brake band, an anchor to which the other end of said anchor arm is connected, and means for manipulating said brake shaft.
2. In draw works having a rotatable drum provided with a substantially circular brake surface; a brake band around said surface, a brake shaft, an arm fixed to said shaft, a link connected to said arm and to one end of said band, said link and arm having a connecting joint, bearings associated with said end of said band, a pair of anchor arms having arcuate tracks on which said bearings ride, said anchor arms being connected, at one end, to the other end of said band, and being pivotally mounted, at their other ends.
3. In draw works having a rotatable drum provided with a substantially circular brake surface; a brake band around said surface, a brake shaft, an arm fixed to said shaft, a link connected to said arm and to one end of said band, said link and arm having a connectin joint, rollers associated with said end of sai band, a pair of anchor arms on which said rollers ride, said anchor arms being connected, at one end, to the other end of said band, and being pivotally mounted, at the outer ends, and means for manipulating said shaft.
4. A brake mechanism comprising a circular brake surface, a'brake band around said surface, a brake shaft, an arm on said shaft, a link connected to said arm and to one end of said band, a bearing associated with said end of said band, an anchor arm anchored at one end and whose other end is connected to the other end of said band, said arm and link having a joint connection arranged to eflect the setting of said brake band as said arm and link approach a straight line position, a track substantially concentric with said brake surface along which said bearing rides.
5. The combination with a substantially circular brake surface, of a brake band around said surface, a band actuating device having an actuating arm and a link jointed to said arm and connected to one end of said band, a

an anchor arm connected at one end to the other end of said band and attached at its other end to a suitable anchor, there being a track substantially concentric with said brake surface on which said bearing rides.
