Description

W. D. SMITH.
WHEELED TOY.
APPLICATION HLED JULY 14, I916.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916 WILLIAM DAVIS SMITH, OF CYNWYD, It?ENNSYLVANIA.
WHEELED TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Application filed July 14, 1916. Serial No. 109,334.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cynwyd, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in -Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheeled toys, particularly to toys of the trundle-whcel class, the object of the invention being to provide a toy comprising a ground or running wheel with a push bar or carrier, combined with a brake mechanism adapted to be actuated from a point in proximity to the handle of the push bar whereby the child operating the device may occupy the brake mechanism to establish a braking action, thus adding interest to the manipulation of a toy of the class described.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a perspective view of the device with the brake in normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device with the brake in applied. position. Fig. 3 is a detail section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a trundle wheel, which is suitably journaled upon one end of a push bar or carrier 2, provided at its opposite or free end with a suitable form of handle 3. In the use of this device the operator grips the handle 3 in one end and holds the bar 2 elevated and exerts a forcing pressure thereon to force the wheel 1 forward, the wheel running upon the surfaceof the ground in advance of the operator who walks or runs behind it.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a brake device comprising a brake shoe a arranged to engage the periphery of he wheel 1, and which is mounted upon one end of a brake applying lever This lever 5 extends vertically above and below the bar 2 and is pivotally mounted at an intermediate point upon the bar, as shown at 6. Similarly mounted upon the rear end of the bar 2, adjacent to the handle 3, is a brake actuating lever 7, which extends vertically above and below the bar and is piv otally mounted thereon, as indicated at 8. The upper end of this lever is provided with a suitable handle- 9 while the lower end of said lever is connected with the upper end of the lever 5 through the medium of lever mechanism comprising a power transmitting lever 10 pivotally mounted upon the bar, as indicated at 11, and having its lower and upper ends res} 3ectively connected with the upper ends of the levers 5 and 7 by means of links 12 and 13, the construction being such that by moving the handle 9 rearwardly toward the handle 3 the levers will be moved in a proper direction to throw the brake shoe el into engagement with the wheel 1, while a reverse movement of the handle 9 will move the levers to retract or withdraw the brake shoe from engagement with the wheel.
It will thus be seen that I provide a trundle wheel device with a simple form of brake mechanism by means of which the operator of such device may throw the brake mechanism into and out of action to control the running speed, and so as to simulate the braking action of a vehicle, thus adding zest and amusement to the manipulation ot' such devices. The form of lever mechanism provided is applicable at a comparatively low cost and is adapted to establish a powerful braking action.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising an actuating bar having a handle at one end thereof, a trundle w ieel journaled upon the opposite end of the bar, a brake member supported by the bar in position to engage the trundle wheel, a brake operating lever mounted upon the bar in proximity to the handle, and connections between said lever and the brake member for actuating the latter.
2. A toy comprising a trundle wheel, an actuating bar or lever, a brake shoe mounted upon the bar, and a system of levers for operating said shoe, arranged to be actuated from a point adjacent to the handle of the bar.
3. A toy comprising a trundle wheel, an
actuating bar or lever therefor, provided at between said brake and actuating levers, its rear end with an operating handle, a whereby the brake shoe may be thrown into lever pivotally mounted on the bar, a brake and out of action from a point in proximity 10 shoe carried by said lever, an operating lever to the handle of the bar.
5 mounted upon the barndjabent to the han- E In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. dle thereof, and link and lever connections WILLIAM DAVIS SMITH.
Copies of this patent me; be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
