,E. L I M INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Maul, 1932 ates 12a.herons-Bataan,onwasmneroigin simerorcont nua Application filed eastern, isgafser aliwo 399,533;
"This invention relates to article containers and more particularly to-a receptacle or con-' tainer: into which bottles of milk, "butter,
groceries, mail, newspapers, packages of groceries, etc, maybe placed and retained,
until removed by theoccupa-n-t ofthe house at which the container is installed, and the invention has as one-of-its' objects to provide a container which, after the articlesdeposited therein have been removed, maybe readily separate'd andremoved from the doorand its frame -ore the windowand its frame, thQ -COIh tamer being designed, for use n connection i lay d in connection with house I doors having sills and also in connection-with doors which with cl-oors, windows-and trap doors, so that,
' when it is not in place for the reception of articles, it will not interfere with the opening and closing of thecd-eor in the customary manner; The complete assembly does not block 7 the doorway and nothing is fastenedlto the door-frame.
' Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a'receptacle or container of-the class de scribed, so constructed that it"fmay be em? do not have sills;v 1 7:
Another object of the invention is to pro- Vide means-whereby a holding or retaining member, which is connected with thefborly of the container, maybe folded-t0. occupy a position lees-ids thesaidbody of the'con-tainer wh'enthe container is not in use,so that the device will atsuch time occupyminimum .space. I I
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby a receptacle or container may be installed position to receive the" articles delivered to the house or' store by 1 the mere insertion of a retaining, member between the lower edge of the door and the door sill, or'thefloor, where a sill is not-present,
this member preventing the receptacle or.
container being bodily carried away. 7 v
a 'This invention also'consists in certain other features of construction and in the combina tion and arrangement of theyseveral parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifi cally pointed out in the appended claims.

r The container 1, preferably made metal, is of rectangular form and of any desired depth and width" dimensions, and "the container is closed on all sides except at its sheet op; and aclosuretflis hinged .a'titsreai side asat 3 tothenpp'e'r edge ofthe, rear wallyoi' he b dy or the container and may beheld closed by a lock 4 of a type to lock automatman after thejc'losnre has been onceisw ung V to open position and goods have heenj de posited'therein, and the closure again swungtoh-losed positionL; I I In the embodiment of the inventionshown in'Ei-gunes 1 and 2 oft-he drawings; theretainr I ing member forthecontainerisindicated by: the numeral 5 andcomprises a plate,- which:
maybe 'of-theiirustoetriangulariormeshowm pintle rod 7 is inserted through these sleeves and through rectangular loops 8, which are riveted ,orotherwise secured at their upper ends as at 9 to the rear wall of the container and at their lower ends to the bottom of the container.
' taining plate 5 is rolled upon itself to form a cylindrical abutment member, indicated by the numeral 11, and byreference to Figure 1 of the drawing, it will be observed that when the container is set up for use, the retainer plate 5 is disposed to rest uponthe sill l2 for the door 13, and the door is then swung to closed position, the plate 5 being.
shifted as the door is being closed, so as to cause the abutment member 11 to bear against the innerside of the door at the-lower edge thereof. At this point,,it will-be evident that inasmuch as the end and intermediate portions of the pintle rod 7, of this arrange;
ment of the parts, rests in the upper ends of the l oops.8,the retaining plate 5 will constitute ameans for supporting the container 1 and, in order that the container may be supported in upright position parallel to the door, it is formed in its rear wall with an opening 14;; and a chain for cable 15 is provided with an eye 16 at one end, the eye resting against a washer 17, which is of metal andis preferably disposed against a heat insulatinglining 18, which is applied to themner surface of the walls of the container.
The door isprovided. with an opening 19 which maybe bored-therein by any ordinary boring drill, and a chain 15is adapted to be led through this opening, and has pivoted to its end, an anchoring element, indicated by the numeral20, whichelement comprises a head portion 21, and a finger portion 22, the chain being connected to the element intermediate the ends thereof so that the portion 21 of the element will extend at a slight angle away from the door when the element is in the anchoring position shown in Figure 1. This anchoring element, together with the chain 15 constitutes also a further means for preventing surreptitious removal of the container, and it will be understood at this point by reference to Figure 1 that the. anchoring element may be tilted inwardly from the door and turned to position in alignment with the chain 15,. and then slid through the opening 19, in -disconnecting the chain and anchoring element from the door. In order that the retainer plate 5 may be held in a folded position, as shown in broken lines in Figure 1 of the drawings, a substantially semi-circular clip 23 is mounted upon the rear wall of the container andris of resilient metal so asto frictionally :grip and hold the overturned The outer or rear end of-ther'eabutment portion 11 of the retaining plate, when engaged therein.
It will be understood that due to the oblong shape of the loops 8, the ends and intermediate portions of the pintle pin 7 may have engagement in these loops at different points in the height thereof, and therefore the retaining device is effective for sills of various heights.
Inorder that display cards or a card bearing memorandumof the goods to be delivered to the user of the device may be fitted in the receptacle and retained in place, two channeled guides 2 1 are provided upon the upper side of the hinged cover 2 of the receptacle or they may be arranged upon the ends of the front thereof.
These cards may be instruction or advertising cards, in the latter instance, relating to dairies and, for example, bearing requests 1. A receptacle, vertically disposed loopsarranged on one side of the receptacle im- 'mediately adjacent the bottom thereof, a retaining plate having spaced longitudinally extending hinge sleeves alongone edge, a pintle received by said sleeve and by said vertically disposed loops, wherebythe retaining plate is capable of being arranged horizon-V tally across the sill of a doorway, and adjusted in said loops for sills of various heighths, and an abutment formed on the opposite longitudinal edge of the plate for engagement against the inner side of the door when the. latter is. closed.
2. A receptacle, a retaining plate hingedly mounted and vertically adjustable adjacent the bottom of the receptacle and adapted to be arranged horizontally across the sill of a doorway, an abutment formed on one edge of the plate and adapted to engage against the inner side of the door when the latter is closed, a chain slidable through an opening in one wall ofthe receptacle and adapted to be passed through an opening in the door, and an anchoring member pivoted on one end of the chain to be passed through the opening in the door and subsequently arranged parallel and in contacting engagement with the inner side of the door.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
