- This invention relates to a clip for retaining a pencil in desired position on an article of clothing or the like, and has for one of its objects to provide a construction which will 5 require the use of but one hand for mounting a pencil in position in the holder.

' Another object of this invention is the provision of a construction which may be clipped to any part of the clothing and along which a pencil may be guided as it is inserted between one ofthe clip jaws and a pencil retaining means associated therewith. 8 Another object of this invention is to provide a construction having a wide engaging surface so that it may be used to advantage for securing a necktie. to the shirt of the wearer and which at the same time provides a mounting for retaining a pencil or the like thereon in a convenient position for easy detachment and use.

A further object of this invention is the provision'of a construction which is simple to manufacture and assemble and one which will not abrade or rupture the clothing or other articles if mounted thereon or with which it is associated and may come inacontact. I r V A still further object of this invention is the provision of a construction which will have parts so formed as'to permit of easy entrance of the clothing or thelike between the jaws. o

With. these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be morefully described5 and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In order to secure a pencil on this clip, I have provided aretaining member 25, which is generally arc shaped at one end to embrace the usual round pencil, although any shape may be used. This retaining member is also provided with walls or ears 27 having openings 28 which align with openings in ears 29 formed on the jaw 10 adjacent the fold and which openings receive a pivot pin 30 extended therethrough about which a coil spring 81 is positioned to engage the reversely extended portion 12 and the cross bar 32 of the retaining member 25 to force the same toward the jaw 10 that a pencil 33 may be mounted between this retainingmember and the jaw member 10 to secure the same in position. The retaining member 25 is limited in its pivotal movement toward the jaw member 10 by the engagement of the cross bar 32 with the strip 10 (see Fig. A).

The broad surface of the jaw 10 serves as a guide for sliding the pencil into the retained position between the jaw and the end of the are shaped retaining member which may be accomplished with one hand, it being unnecessary to handle the clip, and this broad surface also serves to obtain the proper grip upon the fabric such as a tie'or the like to which it is secured.

The foregoing descriptionis directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A clip comprising a pair of jaw mem bers connected together at one of their ends, and a member shaped to embrace a pencil pivoted adjacent said point of connection and means for moving said pivoted member toward one of said jaw members to form a retaining means for a pencil.

A clip comprising a strip of sheet stock forming a jaw member and folded to provide a reversely extending portion at one end with a reduced portion forming a finger extending longitudinally, an open frame shape member provided with a finger, a sleeve folded about said fingers to secure them together, said jaw members being held in contact by the inherent resiliency at said fold, a retaining member having an arch shaped end, and means for pivoting said retaining member in said jaw members adjacent said fold.

7 A clip comprising a strip of sheet stock forming a jaw member and folded to provide a reversely extending portion at one end with a reduced portion forming a 'fingereX- tending longitudinally, an open frame shaped member provided with a finger, a sleeve folded about said fingers to secure them together, said jaw members being held in contact by the inherent resiliency at said fold, a retaining member having an. are shaped end, ears on said retaining member, ears on said reversely extending portion, a pivot pin extending through said ears and a spring about saidxpin and acting between said retaining member and one of said jaw members to move said retaining member toward one jaw member for holding a pencil or the like therein.

8. A clip comprising a pair of jaw members connected together at one of their ends, and a member shaped to embrace a pencil pivoted adjacent said point of connection and means for moving said pivoted member toward one of said j aw members to form a retaining means for a pencil, and means for limiting the amount of swinging movement of said pencil embracing member.
