GATE
Fiied July 28, 1951 Invenlpr I F- Jazz/c aw Patented Mar. 1, 1932 TES PATENT OFFICE DANUAL D. BENTON, OF MERETA, TEXAS GATE Application filed July 28,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a gate embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts whereby the same is adapted to be opened in either direction by engagement of an automobile therewith, thus doing away with the necessity for the operator of the automobile or another person getting out for the purpose of opening the gate to permit passage of the vehicle.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a gate of the aforementioned character embodying novel means for hingedly mounting the same on a supporting post and further including novel means for returning the gate to its closed position automatically after the vehicle has passed.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a gate of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, efficient and reliable in operation and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a gate in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of F igure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate posts, the latter supporting the gate constituting the present invention which is designated generally by the reference numeral 3.
The ate comprises a substantially rectangular f iame, preferably of metal, including the upper and lower bars 4 and 5, respectively, and the end bars 6 and 7. Extending between the upper and lower bars 4 and 5 adjacent the end bar 7 and in spaced parallel- 1931, Serial No. 558,638.
ism therewith is a bar 8. Suitable wire 9 1s mounted on the frame and extends between the upper and lower bars 4 and 5 and between the bars 6 and 8.
The gate 3*is mounted for swinging movement in a horizontal plane on the post 2 by upper and lower palrs of coacting hinge members 10 and 11, the hinge members 11 including a two part clamp engaged on the upper and lower bars 4 and 5. The hinge 60 members 10 are anchored in the post 2 and are provided with pins on their free end portions engageable in openings provided therefor in the free end portions of the hinge members 11.
A brace arm 12 extends from an intermediate portion of the bar 8 to an intermediate portion of the bar 7. Eye bolts 13 encircle the bar 7 above and below the brace 12 and are mounted horizontally in the post 2. Oppositely coiled springs 14 encircle the bar 7 and have one end engaged with the eye bolts 13 and their other ends engaged with the upper and lower bars 4 and 5 of the gate. The springs 14 are adapted to yieldingly urge the gate in opposite directions.
Bumper bars 15 are clamped on opposite sides of the frame through the medium of bolts 16. The bumper bars 15 extend between the bars 6 and 8 of the gate frame adjacent the lower bar 5. The bars 15 are disposed for engagement by the bumper of a vehicle.
In use, the vehicle approaches the gate slowly and engages the -ad acent bumper bar 15 to swing the gate open. This winds one of the coiled springs 14 and unwinds the other of said coiled springs. When the vehicle has passed the gate, the coiled spring which has been wound by the opening of the gate returns said gate to its closed position. The upper and lower sprin s 14 balance each other, thus maintaining t e gatein alignment with the posts 1 and 2 when closed.
It is believed that the many advantages of a gate in accordance with this invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred-embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of m parts may be resorted to which will fall within the sec e of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is In a structure of the class described, a gate having upper and lower horizontal rails and an end member connecting the rails, a supporting post, hinges carried by the su porting post and having connection with t e upper and lower rails, eye-bolts mounted on the post and having eyes receiving said end member, and coil springs mounted on said end member and having the terminal portions thereof engaged with said upper and lower rail and with said eye-bolts.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
DANUAL D. DENTON.
