Description
March l, 1932. E, 5, M|X 1,847,776
GARTER Filed May 6. 1929 INVENTOR am? /y zu; TToR N'EY Patented Mar. l, 1932 UNITED STATES lPATENT OFFICE EDWIN S. MIX, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HICKOK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, INC., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK GARTER` Application med Maya, 1929. serial No. 360,643.
The present invention relates to garters and an object of the invention is to provide a garter having an elastic strap portion which is adjustable to legs of dii'erent sizes, and
does away with the detachable hook connec-V tion between one end of the strap and the pad. Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means of adjustably connecting one end of the strap to the pad. Still another object of the invention is to provide a garter having the metal parts reduced to a minimum. Y
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the garter;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2, Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a guide -eyelet or grommet;
Fig. 4 is a detailed view of a modification of the invention.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3, there is employed a pad 1 formed of two layers of fabric or leather 2 and stitched together at 3 and having a garment clasp 4 depending therefrom of any suitable construction.
The pad is provided with two guides 5 arranged to converge toward the top of the pad, each guide, in Jthis instance, being formed by providinga slot in the pad and reinforcing the' wall of the slot. The reinforcing means consists, in this instance, of anA elongated eyelet 6 which is turned overthe opposite faces of the pad about the slot and is preferably formed 01"' a nonoXidizable material such for instance as Celluloid or bakelite.
The leg band or strap 7, in this instance, is formed of elastic material and has loops 8 and 9 at opposite ends passed kthrough the two eyelets of the pad. The loop 8 is stitched at 10 and is not adjustable, but the inner layer of the loop 9 is secured to a slide 11V which is adjustable on the strap so as to adapt the garter to legs of different sizes.
In order to prevent the looped strap ends slipping in the eyelets and to keep the strap in a spreaded condition, each eyelet may have a slip preventing means on the side wall engaged by the strap. This means, in this instance, comprises alternate projections 12 and recesses 13 which distort the strap and hold it spreaded. i
` In .the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the parts are the same except one end of the band or strap which is stitched at 8a between the layers, so that the two ends of the strap diierge outwardlyand upwardly from the pa In all embodiments of the invention, the hooked connection between the pad and the strap is eliminated while an adjustable-strap for fitting legs of different sizes is obtained. The ends of the strap connect with the pad so they diverge upwardly and outwardly from the pad. The guides are at right angles to the strap and when two guides are provided they converge toward the top of the pad. In the two `forms of the invention, a loop at one or both ends of the pad passes through a slot in the pad, the walls of the slot being reinforced by an eyelet made of non-oxidizing material. In all embodiments the guide has means for holding a looped end on the strap in a spreaded condition to prevent it bunching on the guide.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. LA garter comprising a pad formed of substantially pliable material and having a slot therethrough, an elongated eyelet iitted in said slot, a garment clasp carried by the pad, and a strap secured at one end to the pad and having its other end provided with a loop passed through the eyelet.
2. A garter comprising a pad formed of substantially `pliable material and having a slot formed therethrough, reinforcing means for the pad at the slot formed of substan tially rigid and non-oxidizable material, and a strap secured at one end to the pad and having its other end provided with a loop passed through the slot in the pad, and a garment clasp carried by the pad.
