driving of the pile and before the insertion of the permanent key. In order not to interfere with the operation of the pile driving hammer, it is desirable to have this jet-pipe located beneath the top of the head of the pile. This is secured by a chase connecting with the key-way and extending to the face of the pile head.
Referring to the invention in greater particularity, and in connection with the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a pre-cast pile having a head 2 at the end thereof which in use is positioned at the top,
and has a point 3 at the other or lower end.
The body or central portion ff of the pile has one or more depressions 5 in a face thereof which lightens the pile and alsoreduces the friction necessarily resulting in driving the pile into place. The opposite side edges or longitudinal margins of the pile are preferably ofl set, thus providingan off-set edge 6 at one side of the pile and an off-set edge 7 at the other side of the pile. The off- set edges 6 and 7 preferably are upon opposite sides of an imaginary plane extending in a flatwise direction through the middle of the body portion. Furthermore, the parts are preferably so'constructed and arranged that when the piles are brought together the adjacent ofi-set edgesof adjacent piles will over-lap eachother, as clearly shown in Figures 5 and 6. Key-ways 8 are shown formed in the overlapping faces of the offset edges, these'key-wa'ys preferably being re-entrant and extending the fulllength of the'pile. Furthermore, the key-ways are so positioned that when the off-set edges are placed'inytheir over-lapping positions, the
ey-ways in the overlapping edges will be directly opposite to each-other and opening toward each other so as to receive a key 9.
Said key preferably is enlarged at its edges to enter the enlarged or re-entrant portions of the grooves, and has a thin middle portion which will pass through the narrower openings of the grooves. Before the keys are inserted, and during placing of the piles, it may be desirable to employ a wash pipe, the same being inserted in the groove temporarily and withdrawn after the pile is finally placed. For accommodating such a Wash pipe atthe head of the pile, I provide a chase 10 from the outer surface of the pile tothe groove, providing a depression below the top surface or head of the pile for receiving the wash pipe 11 which is thus protected against crushing by'the hammer or other means by which the pile is driven into place. V
If so desired, a temporary key 12 may be employed for holding the piles together, this keylbeing replaced at a later timeby a permanent key of concrete or cement or other material which may be pre-cast or molded directly in place as found most desirable. It
will be observed that my invention may be employed equally well on curvilineal piles as upon straight or fiat piles. Furthermore,
detail changes and modifications may be made in the construction and use of my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction except as set forth in the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-''
1. A construction of the character described, comprising in combination a plu rality of pre-cast piles, each pile having an off-set edge off-set opposite to the edge of the adjacent pilewhereby adjacent edges of said piles will overlap, the overlapping edges having j uxtaposed' grooves opening toward each other, said piles also having transverse chases in the upper ends thereof running into said grooves in the overlapping edges for reception of wash pipes, hollow temporarykeys for securing said piles together by insertion in said juxtaposed grooves, and wash pipes in said temporary keys and in said chases at a level below the upper end surface of the pile thereby avoiding interference with hammering the piles into place.
2. A pre-cast pile comprising abocly portion having opposite stepped off-set portions with one face of each off-set portion disposed intermediate of opposite side faces of the body portion, said ofi' set portions having reentrant grooves therein'wit-h the depth of the grooves transverse to the said opposite faces of the body portion, said re-entrant grooves adapted to receive keys for holding overlapping ofi-s'et portions of adjacent piles together.
3. A pre-cast pile'comprising a body portion having opposite stepped off-set portions with one face of each off-set portion disposed intermediate of and parallel to'opposite side faces of the body portion, said oif-setlportions having re-entrant grooves therein with the depth of the grooves transverse to the said oppositefaces of the body portion, said reentrant grooves adapted to receive keys for holding over-lapping off-set portions of adin juxtaposed relationship toeachother and having juxtaposed re-entrant grooves therein opening toward each other with the grooves transverse'to the exposed'face of the pile, and a key in said juxtaposed grooves securing the piles against separating either in a direction inthe' planeof the piles or in a direction transverse to the plane of said piles.
5. In a construction of the character described, the combination of a plurality of pre-case piles, each pile having an ofi-set face off-set opposite to the off-set face of the adjacent pile and intermediate of and parallel to opposed outside faces of the said piles so that the oil-set portions of adjacent piles over-lap, the said faces of the overlapping portions lying in juxtaposed relationship to each other and having juxtaposed re-entrant grooves therein opening toward each other with the grooves transverse to the exposed face of the pile, and a key in said juxtaposed grooves securing the piles against separating either in a direction in the plane of the piles or in a direction transverse to the plane of said piles.
