PATENT OFFICE ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNIEENTS, TO
VORTEX CUIR COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION F DELAWAE CUP MACHINE Application :tiled October 21, 1927. Serial No. 227,657.
This invention relates to a fiat bottom cup making machine, and more particularly to improved cup body blank feed and gluing mechanisms in combination with improved transfer means whereby adhesive blanks may be readily delivered to the cup forming mandrels forming part of the machine. This invention is similar in many respects to the application for patent of Harold Carle for a Flat bottom cup making machine, filed @Ctober 18, 1926, Serial No. 142,370, and assigned to The Vortex Mfg. Co. of Chicago, Illinois, assignee of the present invention.
It is an object of this invention to provide a flat bottom cup making machine with improved and simplified mechanisms for automatically gluing and feeding cup blanks into the machine.
lt is also an object of the invention to provide a cup machine with means for feeding cup blanks into the field of operation of adhesive applying mechanisms adapted to stamp stripes of adhesive on the blanks prior to the automatic transfer of said blanks to cup forming means to be formed around cup bottom blanks to form iiat bottomed cups.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cup making machine with mechanisms for feeding and centering cup blanks over an adhesive applying pad having improved adhesive supply roller mechanisms whereby adhesive is suppled to the pad prior to an upward movement thereof against a centered blank held by a transfer device adapted to carry the stamped adhesive blank to forming mandrels of the machine.
lit is a further object of this invention to provide a cup making machine with a blank holding magazine from which a cup blank is adapted to be individually removed and then advanced by reciprocating members into a centered glue applying position and into engagement with a transfer device adapted to hold the blank while glue is stamped thereon and then advance said blank into engagement with cup formers.
lt is furthermore an object of this inven-` tion to provide a cup making machine having a blank holding magazine from which a cup blank is adapted to be removed and be pushed by slidable centering members into contact with centering stops on a pivoted transfer device provided with clamping means for holding the centered blank clamped in position to permit a reciprocating glue pad to be supplied with glue and then advanced upwardly to stamp the clamped blank with strips of glue before the transfer device is swung through an arc to deliver the adhesived blank to cup forming mandrels of the machine to be formed into a cup.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a fiat bottom cup making machine of the rotary type having automatically op erable blank feeding, centering and gluing devices operating in proper sequence to apply glue upon a cup blank held in a clamped centered position on a pivoted transfer device adapted to advance the blank and automatically release the same as it is engaged by cu. forming mandrels to be conducted through the machine to be formed into a cup.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown on the drawings:
The improved rotary type fiat bottom cup making machine embodying the present invention comprises mechanisms adapted to feed a strip of material to a cup bottom blank unch device and deliver the punched out flanged bottom blank against one flat end of a frustrum shaped forming mandrel; to feed a sector-shaped cup body blank from a magazine and automatically advance the blank into a centered position into engagement with a blank transfer device to be gripped thereby while adhesive is applied to the blank before the same is transferred to a forming mandrel and carried thereby into a position to be shaped around the flanged bottom blank; to carry the partly formed cup blank through successive positions wherein the adhesived body blank is bent around and pressed against the flange of the bottom blank to for-m a completed flat bottomed cup which is then automatically released, discharged and counted and then finally stacked with similarly formed cups ready for delivery from the machine.
The cup forming, discharging and counting mechanisms will be only briefly described since they are substantially the same as those covered in the earlier Harold Carle patent application hereinbefore referred to.
The improved machine consists generally of a metal framework comprising a table or platform 1 supported by legs 2. For a clear understanding of the operation of the Inachine the arrangement of the main driving mechanisms will now be described. A horizontal drive shaft 3 is journalled in bearings 4 supported on the table 1 and said shaft is adapted to be rotated through a clutch 5 operable by a conveniently disposed hand lever or the like. Mounted on the shaft 3 for coaction with the clutch 5 is a large driving gear 6 which meshes with a driving pinion 7 mounted on one end of the shaft 8 of a driving motor 9. A hand wheel 10 is secured near the forward end of the main shaft 3. Mounted in the rear end of the main shaft 3 is a sprocket around which an endless chain 11 is trained. 'The chain 11 is connected to drive a rotary exhaust pump (not shown) but which is connected by means of a pipe 12 to an air exhaust tank 13 positioned beneath the table 1 (Figure 4) An auxiliary horizontal cam shaft 14 is journalled in bearings supported on the table 1. A pinion 187 on the main shaft 3 is in mesh with a large gear 15 on the shaft 14 thereby causing said shaft 14 to be continuously rotated.
A horizontal central shaft 16 mounted in bearings 17 is intermittently rotated by the cam shaft 14 through Geneva gears 18 and 19. During the rotation of the main shaft 3 continuous rotation will bc imparted to the cam shaft 14, while the central shaft 16 is intermittently rotated from said cam shaft 14.
The various operations of forming iiat bottomed cups are focussed about a spider or turret head keyed to the central shaft 16 and having four radially directed arms or spokes 20. Each of the spider arms 2O has rotatably supported thereon a frustum-shaped cup former or mandrel 21, having a row of pneumatic gripper apertures 22 therein. The mandrels are connected with the air exhaust tank 13 `through a suitable air control valve carried by the mandrel spider.
The mandrels 21 are frustum-shaped with the flat outer ends positioned to support a flanged cup bottom blank while a cup body blank is adapted to be carried on the peripheral surface. The mandrels are subject to rotation on their studs at predetermined times and to translation periodically from one position to another in a circular path by reason of the rotation of the central shaft 16.
The machine has associated therewith bottom blank feed and punch mechanisms comprising a supporting bracket 23 mounted on the side of a plate 24. The bracket is adapted to carry a rotatable reel of prepared paper ribbon 25 from which bottom blanks are to be punched. The strip of paper 25 is conducted downwardly between feed rollers 26 and between a punch mechanism 27 and a die mechanism 28. The feed rollers 26 are rotated by means of gears 29 operable in turn by a pawl 30 and a ratchet wheel 31. The pawl 30 is adapted to be operated by a connecting rod 32 the lower end of which is connected into a lever arm 33 pivoted beneath the table 1. A roller 34 is carried on one side of the lever arm 33 and rides on a control cam 35 secured on a transverse cam shaft 36 journalled in bearings 37 supported on the machine framework.
The strip of paper 25 after having bottom blanks punched therefrom is designated by the reference numeral 38 and is wound upon a reel 39 removably engaged on a shaft journalled on bearing brackets 40. A pulley wheel 41 is fixed on one end of the shaft supported in the bearing brackets 40. Trained around the ulley wheel 41 is an endless belt 42 which is a so trained around a grooved pulley 43 fixed on the cam shaft 36.
The cam shaft 36 carries a bevel gear 44 which meshes with a bevel gear 45 fixed on the front end of a lon itudinally disposed cam shaft 46. The shag: 46 is driven by an endless chain 47 which is trained around sprocket wheels 48 on the shaft 46 and around asprocket wheel on the shaft 14 (Figure 5) The mechanisms for operating the bottom blank punch members consists of a fulcrumed arm 49 pivoted on a shaft supported in bearings formed on bracket plates 50 supported on the machine framework. Rotatably supported on the lower end of the arm 49 is a roller 51 which co-acts with a punch control cam 52 fixed on the shaft 36. Also supported 'by the plates 50 is a lower stud shaft 53 for rotatably supporting a bell crank having arms 54 and 55. A roller 56 is rotatably carried on 'the short bell crank arm 54 and said roller has rolling contact with a forming punch control cam 57 secured on the cam shaft 36. The upper end of the long bell crank arm coacts with a collar 58 Xed on the punch mechanism 27 which is adapted to be actuated to punch a bottom blank out of the strip of paper 38 and force said bottom blank through the forming die mechanism 28 causing the margin of the bottom blank to be bent over to form a flange. The flanged cup bottom blank is pushed by the punch mechanism into engagement with the fiat outer end of one of the forming mandrels 21 aligned at the time with said punch mechanism. Each mandrel 21 is provided with end suction producing means to hold the formed cup bottom blank in place on the end of the mandrel when the punch mechanism 27 is retracted.
The apparatus for supporting, feeding and gluing a cup body blank will now be described. Rigidly secured to one side of the table 1 is an auxiliary table 59 having rigidly secured across the front edge thereof an upright wall 60 having side wing plates or bracket plates 61 integrally formed thereon and projecting upwardly' above the upper edge of the wall 60. Connecting the upper outer ends of the bracket plates 61 is a transverse bar 62 parallel to a second bar 63 supported on the inner edges of the bracket plate 61. Secured upon the cross bars G2 and 63 are a plurality of guide boards 64, 65, 66 and '67 which are of different lengths and are spaced apart to afford a plurality of parallel guide grooves 68. The outer ends of the boards 64 to 67 inclusive, are placed in alignment with each other. The inner end of the board 64 is squared at 69 while the inner end of the board 65 is provided with a notch forining stop edges and 71. The inner end of the board 66 is formed with a curved stop edge 72 and is a continuation of the arc forming the stop edge 71. The board 67 is longer than the other guide boards and has one corner out away to form a stop edge 73 (Figure 11). Slidably mounted in the grooves 68 are three blank feed and centering bars 74, 75 and 76. The outer ends of the bars 74,75 and 76 are in alignment and are secured to a transverse plate or bar 77 having a downwardly directed arm 78 secured thereto (Figure 7). The inner end of the centering bar 74 has 011e corner cut off to form an inclined edge 79 adapted to be aligned with the short edge 7 0 of the board 65 when the bar 74 is moved into its innermost position. The inner end of the bar 75 is provided with an arc shaped edge 80 adapted when the bar 75 is in its inner position to register with the curved edges 71 and 72 of the boards 65 and 66 respectively. The inner end of the bar 76 is provided with an angular notch 81 adapted when the bar 76 is pushed inwardly to register with the board edges 72 and 73. The three bars 74, 75 and 76 are also supported by a transverse plate 82 mounted on the bracket plates 61. l/Vhen the blank pusher bars 74, 75 and 76 are simultaneously pushed inwardly a cup body blank is adapted to be advanced into a centered position seated in a recess or pocket formed by the edges 79, 70, 7l, 80, 81 and 73.
Secured upon the top of the boards 64 and 67 are a pair of end flanges 83 which are integrally formed on the sides of a cup body blank holding magazine 84 having a plurality of guide posts 85 between which a stack of cup body blanks are adapted to be held. The bottom of the magazine 84 is open to permit the lowermost cup body blank to rest upon a curved feed pad 86 supported on and extending only part Way around t-he periphery of blank discharge roller 87 mounted on a shaft 88 the ends of which are journalled in the bracket plates 6l (Figure 7) The feed pad 86 is divided into sections to permit the blank feed bars 74, 75 and 76 to slide in their respective guide grooves 68.
Mounted upon the cam shaft 36 to the outside of the cam 35 is a sprocket wheel 89 around which an endless chain 9() is engaged. The chain 90 is also trained around a sprocket wheel 91 (Figure 9) mounted upon a shaft 92 `iournalled in the bracket plates 61. Mounted on the shaft 92 to the outside of one of the bracket plates 61 is a gear 93 which meshes with a large gear 94 secured on the outer end of the shaft 88 to permit a drive to be imparted to the blank discharge roller 87. Also secured on the shaft 88 adjacent the large gear 94 is a smaller gear 95 which meshes with a pinion 96. The pinion 96 is mounted on the outer end of a stub shaft journalled in a bearing on one of the bracket plates 61. Mounted on the same stub shaft adjacent the bracket plate 61 is a large gear 97 meshing with a pinion 98 secured on the end of a lower blank feed shaft 99 having a grooved lower blank feed roller 100 mounted thereon. Meshing with the lower pinion 98 is a pinion 101 supported on the outer end of an upper feed shaft 102 projecting through slots in the bracket plates 61 and having a grooved upper blank feed roller 103 mounted thereon. The projecting ends of the upper roller shaft 102 are journalled in bearings 104 supported on the ends of a pair of arms 105 pivoted at 106 on the sides of the bracket plates 61. The two bearings 104 are connected by a transverse bar 107.
A cup body blank discharged from the bottom of the magazine by the pads 86 on the discharge roller 87 is advanced between the two feed rollers 100 and 103 which act to advance the blank beyond the inner ends of the bars 74,75 and 76 with certain of the edges of said blank positioned adjacent the edges 79, 80 and 81 of said centering bars to be engaged thereby when` said bars are moved inwardly with respect to the blank, feed table. Referring to Figure 7 the lower end of the arm 78 has pivoted thereon one end of a link 108 the other end being pivoted to one arm of bell crank 109 pivoted on a shaft 110 supported by the bracket plates 61. Pivoted on the second arm of the bell crank 109 is the upper end of a connecting rod or bar 111 the lower end of which is pivoted to one end of a lever 112. One end of the lever 112 is pivoted to a bracket arm 113 secured to the bottom of the auxiliary table 59. A roller` 114 is carried on one end of the lever 112 and said roller is positioned to co-act with the periphery of a control cam 115 secured on the cam shaft 36.
The cam 115 serves to cause operation of the members 111. 109 and 108 (Figure 7) thereby causing the blank advancing bars 7 4, 75 and 76 to be pushed inwardly to engage against a partly advanced blank to move said blank beneath a hot plate 116 pivoted along one edge of the projecting inner ends of the board 67. An electric heating element 145 is mounted on the pivoted plate 116 and is provided with a terminal cable or cord 146 adapted to be connected with an electric circuit. The feed bars act to push the cup blank beneath the heated plate 116 and over a blank transfer head 117 secured on a transfer arm 118 provided at one end with a passaged supporting shank 119. The shank 119 has a hollow or passaged shaft 134 integrally formed thereon with said shaft projecting downwardly through a bearing sleeve 120 formed on a bracket 121 fixed on the table 1. Rigidly secured to the lower projecting end of said hollow shaft is a crank arm 122 having connected therewith one end of a connecting rod 123. rl`he other end of the connecting rod 123 is pivotally connected to the upper end of a fulcrumed bar 124 projecting through an opening 125 (Figure 6) in the table 1 and supported on a bracket )fastened on the under surface of said table. A roller 126 is carried on the lower end of the fulcrumed bar 124 and said roller has rolling contact with a feed arm control cam 127 secured on the cam shaft 46 and adapted to govern the swing of the blank transfer arm 118.
A blank gripper mechanism is mounted on the blank transfer device and comprises a double arm gripper yoke 128 having pivot pins which are journalled in bearing brackets 129 and 130 secured upon the top of the blank transfer head 117. Said bearing brackets 129 and 130 also serve as blank centering stops against which the advanced curved edge of a cup body blank is adapted to contact when the remaining edges of the blank are suiiiciently advanced by the centering bars to permit the blank to seat in the blank cen tering pocket formed by the advanced bars 74, 75 and 76 and by the edges 71, 72 and 73 (Figures 3 and 11) of the boards 65, 66 and 67 respectively. Integrally formed on the gripper yoke 128 is an arm 131 which slants upwardly and has the end thereof engaged over a pin 132 (Figure 7) between a pair of ball members 133. The pin 132 projects axially from the top of a vertical shaft 134 which slidably projects through the hollow shaft within the sleeve 120. Pivotally connected to the lower end of the shaft 134 is the upper end of a toggle bar or link 135 the lower end of which is pivoted on a crank arm 136 secured upon a shaft 137 journalled in bearing brackets 138 fixed upon one edge of the table 1 (Figure 7). Also fixed upon the shaft 137 is a second crank arm 139 which is directed downwardly and has pivotedthereon one end of a connecting rod 140. A yoke or fork 141`is formed on the other end of the rod 140, and is slidably engaged over the shaft 46 (Figure 6). A roller 142 is carried on the rod 140 and coacts with a gripper control cam 143 fixed on the shaft 46 and adapted to co-act with the roller 142 at predetermined times to move the gripper yoke 128 into a closed or blank gripping position against the action of a coiled spring 144 connected to the gripper actuating arm 131 and to the transfer arm 118. The
'spring 144 also acts to hold the roller 142 in contact with the cam 143 at all times. It will be noted that a cup body blank discharged from the magazine 84 is first fed outwardly by the feed rollers 100 and 103 and is then engaged by the slidable bars 74, 75 and 76 which act to push the blank beneath the heated plate 116 into a centered position upon the transfer head 117 and beneath the open or raised gripper yoke 128 which is closed by the action of the gripper control cam 143 as soon as the blank is in its centered position.
After a cup body blank is moved into a centered position and is gripped by the gripper yoke 128 upon the transfer head 117, said centhe inner edges of tered blank is ready to have strips of adhesive stamped upon two of the margins of the bottom face thereof. The adhesive supplying mechanisms comprise an adhesive supply tank 147 mounted upon a shelf 148 integrally formed on a casting 149 mounted upon the machine table 59 and integral with the plate 60. Rotatably mounted Within the tank 147 is an adhesive supply roller 150 which rotates in the glue within the tank. The roller 15() is supported on a shaft 151 one end of which projects from the tank 147 and has a gear 152 mounted thereon to the inside of a beveled gear 153 which meshes with a bevel gear 154 secured on the end of the shaft 92. Meshing with the gear 152 to receive a drive therefrom is a. gear 155 secured on the outer end of a shaft 156 journalled in bearings on the tank 147. An adhesive wiping roller 157 is mounted on the shaft 156 and co-acts with the feed roller 150 to Wipe the excessive glue therefrom. Also meshing with the gear 152 is a gear 158 carried on the end of a shaft 159 journallcd in bearings on the tank 147 and supporting an adhesive feed roller 160 having rolling contact with the supply roller 150 to receive a coating of adhesive therefrom.
An adhesive transfer or applying roller 161 is normally positioned to have rolling contact with the adhesive feed roller 160 to be supplied with a coating of adhesive. The roller 161 is supported on a shaft 162 the ends of which are journalled in a pair of blocks 163 slidably mounted on a pair of guide rods 164 supported in suitable brackets secured to the bracket plates 61, the tank 147 and upon the auxiliarytable 59. Pivoted on each of the blocks 163 is a crank 165 the end of which is pivoted in the upper end of a lever 166. The two levers 166 project through slots 167 in the auxiliary table 59 and are secured to a shaft 168 supported in brackets 169 fasb tened to the bottom of the tables l and 59. The shaft 168 is adapted to be rocked by means of a crank arm 170 secured on one end thereof. Pivoted on the end of the crank arm 170 is a forked coupler 171 to which is pivotally connected one end of a connecting bar or rod 172. A yoke 173 is integrally formed on the rod 172 and is provided with a slot 174 through which the shaft 46 projects. il roller 175 is carried on the end of the yoke 173 and co-acts with a control cam 176 for the adhesive applying roller 161. For the purpose of returning the roller 161 to its normal position a coiled spring 176e is provided with one end attached to one of the brackets 169 (Figure 4) and the other end connected to a bracket arm 177 fixed on one side of the connecting rod 172.
lVhen the adhesive applying roller 161 is advanced due to the action of the control cam 174 on the roller 175, said roller carrying a coat of adhesive is adapted to roll over a straight adhesive applying flange or pad 178 and a curved flange or pad 179 both formed upon the top of an adhesive stamping plate 180. The stamping plate 180 is secured upon a horizontal flange 181 which is integrall formed on the upper end of a plate 182 sli ably mounted behind a pair of spaced guide rails or bars 183 secured upon an upright guide plate 184 forming a part of the castin 149. .Pivoted upon the slidable plate 182 is one end of a toggle bar 185 the lower end of which is pivoted at 186 on the lever 112 F igure 9) to be operated thereby when the lever is actuated bv the control cam 115 which also governs the operation of the blank feed and centering bars 74, 7 5 and 76. The operation of the adhesive stamping pad is so timed that immediately after the adhesive applying roller 161 has been advanced to roll over the pads 178 and 17 9 and return to the normal position against the feed roller 160 the control cam 115 acting on the roller 114 (Figure 7) causes the plate 182 to slide upwardly thereby causing the stamp plate 180 to be raised to permit the adhesived pads 178 and 179 to stamp or apply a straight and a curved stripe of adhesive to the under surface of a cup body blank held in a centered position between the. centering bars 74, 75 and 76 and the 'centering stops 129 and 130 on the transfer head 117 on Which the centered cup body blank is clamped beneath the gripper yoke 128. The centered blank is also positioned beneath the heated plate 116 Which heats the blank so that when the adhesive pad stamps the blank the adhesive Will be heated and remain soft until the stamped blank has been transferred by the transfer arm 118 to the cup forming mandrels to be formed into a cu around a flanged cup bottom blank. lV ien an adhesive cup body blank is advanced to the forming mandrel 21 in the lank receiving position the blank is pneu.- matically gripped by the mandrel as the gripper control spring 144 acts on the gripper arm 131 to release or open the gripper yoke 128 to release the transferred cup body blank.
The cup body blank feed mechanisms, centering means, adhesive applying devices and 'transfer mechanisms covering the improveoperation of said mechanisms will be gone into in detail while the detailed operation of the cup forming machine and associated meclllianisms will only be referred to genera Toystart the machine the control clutch 5 is shifted to' cause the motor 9 to drive the main shaft 3 andthe various auxiliary mechanisms comprising the machine. The strip of prepared material 25 is fed downwardly by the feed rollers 26 (Figure 2) through the bottom blank punch mechanism 27 and the die mechanism 28 controlled by the cams 52 and 57 respectively. A cup bottom blank is first unched from the material 25 and is then orced through the forming die 28 to cause the margin of the bottom blank to be bent to form a flange. The flanged cup bottom is then pushed into engagement with the outer flat end of the mandrel 21 in station A and is pneumatically held in place thereon.
The cup body blanks are carried in a stack within the magazine 84 supported by the boards 65 and 66 with the lowerniost body blank positioned over the discharge roller 87 which is vrotated by the gears 93 and 94 driven from the shaft 92. With the rotation of the roller 87 the pad 86 thereon is brought into frictional contact with the lowermost body blank which is thus discharged from the magazine 84 and advanced between the feed rollers 100 and 103 operated by the gears 97, 98 and 101 (Figure 8). The rollers 100 and 103 advance the blank into a position over the inner ends of table boards 65 and 66 and onto the transfer head 117 when in the position illustrated in Figure 3 and beneath the raised gripper 128.
At this stage in the operation the cam 115 (Figure 7) actuates the bell crank 109 and the link 108 to cause the centering bars 74, 75 and 76 to be slidably advanced into contact with the trailing edges of the body blank to push said blank into contact with the centering stops 129 and 130 on the transfer head 117. In this advanced position of the blank the edges thereof drop into contact with the curved edges 70, 71, 72 and 73 of the feed table boards and the blank is properly centered with the advancement of the centering bars the edges 79, 8O and 81 of which register with the table board edges 70, 71, 72 and 73 to form a centering pocket conforming to the configuration of the cup body blank. The blank is thus centered beneath the hot plate 116 and partially projected over the transfer head 117 witli 'one curved margin and one straight margin of the centered cup blank projecting beyond the edges of the transfer head in the path of operation of the adhesive stamping pads 178 and 179. The centered cup body blank is heated by the hot plate 116 and is clamped upon the transfer head 117 by the gripper 128 which is operated at this point in the operation by the action of the gripper control cam 148 (Figure 6) which co-acts with the roller 142 to operate the members 140, 139, 136 and 135 to cause the rod or shaft 134 to slide upwardly to raise the gripper arm 131 against the action of the spring 144 to lower the gripper 128 into gripping contact with tlie centered cup body blank.
The adhesive supplying mechanisms are operated by the beveled gears 153 and 154 causing the large roller 150 to carry adhesive upwardly to the feed roller 160 with the wiper roller 157 acting to remove surplus adhesive from the supply roller 150. The adhesive applying roller 161 is normally held by the spring 17 6a in rolling contact with the roller 160 to receive a coating of adhesive therefrom. The control cam 176 at this point in the operation now acts on the roller 175 to cause the crank arm 170 to swing inwardly thereby rocking the shaft 168 and causing the lever arms 166 to advance the adhesive applying roller 161 through a h orizontal path controlled by the guide rods 164. The roller 161 is thus advanced and rolls over the stamping pads 17 8 and 179 to coat the saine with a layer of adhesive.
The control cam 115 at this point acting on the roller 114 (Figure 7) swings the lever 112 upwardly thereby raising the toggle bar 185 which in turn slides the plate 182 upwardly in its guides and thereby raises the stamping plate 180 to cause the adhesived ads 178 and 179 to stamp the under surace of the projecting portion of the clamped centered cup body blank with a straight stripe and a curved stripe of adhesive. The blank being heated causes the applied stripe of adhesive to partially dry or set before the blank is advanced to the forming mandrel 21 in station A. Y
After a body blank has been stamped with stripes of adhesive, the control cam 127 (Figure 6) co-acting with the roller 126 causes actuation of the fulcrumed bar 124 and the connecting rod 123. The arm 122 is thus rocked thereby rotating the hollow shaft in the sleeve 120 causing the transfer arm 118 to swing from the blank receiving position illustrated in Figure 3 toward the mandrel 21 in station A carrying the adhesived blank to said mandrel. The blank transfer head 117 advances the blank so that the advance edge or margin thereof is positioned over the row of air suction apertures 22 and beneath a raised presser shoe associated with said mandrel. At this stage in the operation the gripper control cam 143 is positioned to permit the coiled control spring 144 to swing the gripper yoke 128 into open position to release the advanced blank as the suction action in the mandrel apertures 22 act to pneumatically grip or attract the advanced blank.
From this point on, the operations relating to the forming of the adhesived cup body lit) blank around the flanged cup bottom blank to form a flat bottomed cup are substantially the same as those described in the Harold Carle patent application hereinbefore referred to.
