This invention relates to a filing cabinet for letters, bills, papers, records and the like. An object of this invention is to provide a filing cabinet which shall be compact and dust proof when not in use.

Another object of this invention is to provide a filing device wherein the contents of the same shall be readily accessible when the cabinet is in use and wherein it will be impossible for the papers in the cabinet to interfere with the opening and closing of the device.

Still another object of this invention is to devise a filing cabinet which shall be of simple 15 construction and with its component parts subject to so little wear that no replacements will be necessary. Other objects and advantages will appear from the following detailed description.

The invention is illustrated in the acconr panying drawings forming a part hereof and in which- Figure is a perspective view of the device showing the lid opened and the hinged 2 extension in open position.

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device when the cover is closed.

Figure 3 is a vertical section through Figure 1 along the line 3--3.

Figure 1 is a detail sectional view along the line of Figure 3, showing the lever arrangement.

The filing cabinet 5 consists of a back 6, side walls 7 and 8, a bottom 9 and a hinged cover top 10 formed with flanges 11, 12, 13 and 14. The front portion 15 of the cabinet is hinged at 16 to the bottom 9 and is formed with side extensions or wings 17 which are adapted to slide along the side walls of 7 and The side walls and 8, the back and the front are formed with shoulders 18, 18 upon which the flanges 11. 12, 13 and 14 of the top 10 rest to form a tight dust proof seal when the top is in the closed position.

The link 20 is also pivotally attached by means of a pin or rivet at its upper end to the bar or link 21 and the latter is attached to the adjacent wall by means of a rivet or screw 22.

It should be noted that the pivot 22 is fixed whereas the pivots 23 and 24 are movable.

In order to protect the letters or papers in the file from the moving links when the cabinet is opened or closed, I provide an apron or shield 25 which is suspended from the side and rear walls of the cabinet as shown. This apron not only covers the links 20 and? 21 and the upper end of 19 but in addition serves as a guide for the side extensions 17. To insure the rigidity of the extensions 17, the latter may have their upper edges bent back inwardly upon themselves as shown at 26.

The cabinet may also be provided with a suitable locking device 27. Where desirable the cabinet may also be provided on either of the end walls with a holder for carrying the cabinet and the end walls may also be provided with suitable card holders on their outer faces.

When the cabinet is not in use it will apear as shown in Figure 2, the cover 10 restmg on the shoulders 18 of the front portion 15 serving to insure the latter from moving to an 0 en position. When access to the contents o the file is desired, the top 10 is opened and the pivoted front section 15 is pulled outwardly. Its outward movement is limited by the arrangement of levers or links 19, 20 and 21 as is clearly shown in Figures 3 and The links 21 are swung upwardly by the opening of the front 15 but these links 21 cannot move beyond a horizontal or nearly horizontal position due to the links coming into contact with the shoulders 18 of the si e walls 7 and 8. This is shown in detail in Figure 4 of the accompanying drawings.

The above is given merely as one embodiment of my invention. Changes in the construction can be made without departing from the sprit of my invention. Where thought desirable the front section 15 maybe formed in two sections. Thus the upper portion of the front wall 15 could be hinged to the lower portion along a line parallel to the upper edge and a little below the lock. This upper hinged portion could be adapted either to open out completely and rest against the lower portion of 15 or to have its movement limited by the side extensions coming into contact with the shoulder 18. In the first instance the upper hinged section would be severed from the side extensions; in the second instance the hinged portion would have side extensions independent of the side extensions formed integral with the lower portion of 15. This modification would enable one to have access to the cabinet contents without withdrawing the whole front section 15.

Also it is obvious that the extent to which the front section 15 can be varied by variations in the lengths of the links 19, 20 and 21. Where it is desired to position the link or lever arrangement lower, for example below the top of the wing the upper movement of the levers 21, and indirectly the attachment movement of the section 15, can be limited by pins or other projections on the inner side of the walls and 8.

It will be seen from the above that a compact filing device or cabinet of simple and durable construction is provided. The opening of the hinged front of the device makes the contents of the cabinet readily accessible and at the same time serves as a support for the papers etc., when leaving through the same in searching for particular documents.

Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A filing cabinet comprising fixed vertical, side and rear walls, a base, a hinged front wall adapted to move outwardly, a hinged top, said side, rear and front walls being provided with shoulders upon which the hinged top rests when in the closed position, and an arrangement of links cooperating with the shoulders of the side walls and the hinged front wall to limit the outward movement of the hinged front wall, all of said walls being of single thickness.

A filing cabinet comprising fixed vertical, side and rear walls, a base, a hinged front wall provided with side extensions and adapted to move outwardly, a hinged top formed with flanges, said side, rear and front walls being formed with shoulders upon which the flanges of the top are adapted to rest, and an arrangement of interconnected levers attached to said side extensions and cooperating with the shoulders of the side walls and the hinged front wall to limit the outward movement of the latter, all of said Walls being of single thickness.
