IMPROVEMENT IN COUPON-NIPPERS AND TlCKET-PUNCHES- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,561, dated November 21,1876 application filed August 14, 1876.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is one of the handles of the nippers, to which the case B is rigidly attached. An arm, a, carrying a piece of copper, 11, projects from it at the'joint connecting the handles. 0 is the movable handle, which is jointed to the handle A ate, and is provided with a jaw, d,
which is slotted vertically, forming a number of fingers, 6, one of which is provided with a cutting-edge at its lower side, so that as it passes the cutting-edge of the lower side of the aperture f in the case, it will detach a coupon placed in the said aperture. D is a tumbler that turns. on a pivot, g, and is provided with the fingers i, which are the counterpart of the fingers e. E is a coil-spring that returns the tumbler to its normal position. F is a hammer attached by a spring to the tumbler D, and is capable of striking on the bell G. H is a receptacle formed in the case B by the partition j. A guard, I, is attached to thejaw d. that prevents the coupon from getting into the receptacle H without first turning the tumbler D. The part of the handle 0 that forms the joint is elongated, forming an arm in which the punch 70 is placed.
The side of the receptacle H is hinged at l, and provided with a screw, m, which can be turned only with a key. This screw engages with a thread in the post a.
The operation is as follows: A coupon is placed in the aperture f, when a motion 'of the handle 0 detaches it. The fingers 0 force it against the fingers '5, causing the tumbler D to turn until the coupon slips from between the fingers e and c into the receptacle H. The tumbler being liberated, the spring E returns it to its normal position, at the same time causing the hammer F to strike the bell G.
The ticket tobe used with my improvement consists of a strip of paper or card-board, having printed on it any suitable letters, words, or figures, and having coupons suitably printed in such lengths that the nippers will dotach just one and no more or less.
The advantages are that the conductor using one of these nippers cannot defraud a company without its being discovered, as he could not receive the last coupon on a ticket and pretend to clip it, as the hell would not ring, nor could he exchange a ticket with two' coupons for one with three.
The advantage in having a punch in connection with the couponnippers is, that commutation or other tickets may be punched with the same instrument.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with tumbler D, of the case, having a chamber, H, and the jaw (1, having the guard I, all operated by the handle A G, as and for the purpose described.
