JAMES H. PERCY, OF CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT m PAPER BAGS.
Specifieationforming part of Letters Patent No. 184,544., dated November 21, 1876; applieationfiled September :42, 1876.
State of Maryla'nd, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Bag Fastener, of
which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view ofv a paper bag to which in y improved fastener has been applied, part being broken away to show the construc- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same taken through the line :0 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same. folded and fastened. Figs. 4 and 5 represent the reverse sides of a smaller paper bag, to which my fastener has been applied.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish paper bags which shall be so constructed that, when filled and their mouths folded down, they may be fastened at once, and without the necessity of winding a cord around them.
The invention consists in a paper bag provided with tapes, cords, or strings permanen tly attached to its sides in such positions as to come together when the mouth of the bag is turned or folded down, and in a paper bag provided with tapes, cords, or strings, and with a piece of stifl' paper permanently attached to the sideof the bag that is first turned down, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a paper bag, which may be of any size from a flour-sack to the smallest size made. When the bags are filled their months are folded down in the usual way-that is to say, one side of the mouth is turned down,
then the ends, and then the other side, which has been made into an angular flap by turning down the ends. To the side of the bag that is first turned down, a little below the fold, is attacheda short tape, cord, or other string, B, and to the side of the bag that is turned down last, near its edge, is attached another short tape, cord, or other string, 0. When the bag is folded the two strings B 0 come together and can be tied, as shown in Fig. 3.
' The tapes, cords, or strings B O are secured to the sides of the bag A by pasteor other convenient means.
- In the case of large bags a piece of pasteboard or other stiff paper, D, is attached to the inner surface of the side that is first turned down, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. ThepaperD relieves the folds from a part of the strain, and thus strengthens the bag.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a paper bag, of the tapes or strings B 0 attached to the sides of the bag, one above the other, so that when the bag is closed the strings will be opposite each other, as and for the purpose set'forth.
2. A paper bag, A, provided with the tapes, cords, or strings B G, and with a piece ot'stiif paper, D, permanently attached to the side of the bag A that is first turned down, substantially as herein shown and described.
JAMES HANDEN PERCY.
