Patented Feb. 16, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NELSON S. WELK, OF ATHENS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MCBEE BINDER. COMPANY, OF ATHENS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO PERMANENT BINDER FOR LOOSE LEAVES Application filed April 21, 1931.. Serial No. 531,656.
errors in the copying.
My invention relates to that class of binders to be used for binding a plurality of loose leaves after having been made up into a vol ume and then securing the loose leaf volume into a cover from which it can only be removed by the use of a key. It is customary in many localities to make photostats of deeds and similar papers rather than to copy them long hand, thus avoiding any possibility of This, however, necessitates the provision of means to bind these photostats into permanent volumes for proper preservation.
My invention has for its object to provide 7. means for securing these loose leaves into a permanent volume and then providing a cover provided with a lock which will retain the volume permanently unless the cover is un' locked.
A further object is to provide automatic locking means so that it will not be necessary to use a key to lock the volume in the cover although one is required before it can be removed therefrom.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a portion of a volume and the key for unlocking it; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail view SllOWiIlg an end elevation;
Fig. 3 is afragmentary perspective view showing the volume partially removed from the cover;
Fig. dis a side elevation partly in section showing the lock in dotted lines and a fragment of the key; Fig. is a cross section with a fragment of the key; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are fragmentary detail views in section and elevation.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings a number of loose leaves are bound into avolume 1. These leaves may be secured together by the pins 2 which form a permanent volume or they may be secured in any other desired manner but they must have strips 3 and 4 on each side of the volume 1 as clearly seen in Figs.
6 and 7, the heads 5 of the pins 2 serving to clamp the strips 3 and 4 tightly against the sides of the volume. At one end of the strip 3 I locate a spring latch 6having an aperture 7 therethrough which is engaged by a pin 8 mounted on a metal back 9. Preferably this spring is split as clearly seen in Fig. 7 forming two halves and I provide an aperttre 23 to prevent the split in the spring from going any farther, although it may be form-ed in one piece, it is much more difficult to unlock when this preferred construction is used Where the end is split.
The metal back 9 is formed in the shape of a channel having beaded portions 11 and 12 on its longitudinal edges and is securely riveted to a cover 13. The space in between the walls 14 and 15 of the channel is of av size to fit the volume 1, after it has the strips 3 and 4 secured thereto, so that the volume 1 will slide freely into the space between the walls 14 and 15, the beads 11 and 12 engaging the edges of the strips 3 and 4 holding the volume securely in place. The end of the latch 6 is bent upwardly so that the pin 8 will spring it outwardly from the side of the channel and thus permit the continued sliding movement of the volume until it is in position to permit the pin 8 to enter the aperture 7. Then the volume 1 cannot be removed until a key is inserted and the spring latch 6 disengaged from the pin 8.
In order to make it more difficult to remove the bound volume I have found it desirable to close the end of the channel 9 with an end wall 16 and provide a plurality of apertures 17 and 18 therein one for each of the sections of the latch 6. These are fitted to prongs 19 and 20 formed on a key 21. The ends of these prongs are beveled to facilitate their engagement, with the spring latch 6, on each side of the-pin 8. The sharp points entering between the spring latch 6 and the wall of the channel operate to hold the spring lock in disengaged position until the pin 8 i is out of register with the opening 7 when the key can be withdrawn and the lock is again operative.
Although I have described a specific form for my device I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereby since it is only to disclose a preferred embodiment of my invention and I do not intend to limit myself except as such limitations may appear in the hereinafter contained claims.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, strips permanently secured thereto which fit said channel, a pin in said channel, a spring latch secured to said volume, there being an aperture in said spring latch adapted to engage said pin when in register therewith, whereby the volume is locked in the channel, until said latch is disengaged.
2. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, strips permanently secured thereto which fit said channel, a pin in said channel, a spring latch secured to said volume, there being an aperture in said spring latch adapted to engage said pin, a wall which closes one end of said channel there being apertures in said wall whereby a key having forks which [it said apertures may be caused to engage said spring latch on each side of said. pin to disengage said spring latch from said pin.
The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, strips permanently secured. thereto which fit said channel, a pin in said channel, a spring latch secured to said volume, said latch being formed in sections, there being an aperture in said sections adapted to engage said pin, whereby a key operable from the exterior of said binder may release said latch from said pin.
4. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, strips permanently secured thereto which fit said channel, a pin in said channel, a spring latch secured to said volume, the end of said spring being split into sections, there being an aperture in said spring latch adapted to engage said pin, a wall which closes one end of said channel, there being apertures in said wall one for each section of said latch whereby a key having forks which fit said apertures may engage said latch sections on each side of said pin to disengage said spring latch from said pin.
5. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, strips permanently secured thereto which fit said channel, a latch formed in sections secured to said volume, means on said channel which engages said latch when the volume is in said cover, a wall which closes one end of said channel having apertures therein whereby said sect-ions may be disengaged from the exterior of said cover.
6. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, said channel having beads formed on its walls, a bound volume, means on said volume which engage said beads, securing means on said channel, a spring latch secured to said volume, there being an aperture in said spring latch adapted to engage said securing means on said channel wall whereby a key operable from the exterior of said binder may be used to release said latch from said securing means.
7. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, means on said volume which engage the side walls of said channel, a pin in said channel, a spring latch secured to said volume, there being an aperture in said spring latch adapted to engage said pin, a wall which closes one end of said channel, there being apertures in said wall whereby a key having forks which fit said apertures may he used to disengage said spring latch from said pin.
8. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, strips permanently secured thereto which fit said channel, a latch on said volume, means on said channel which engages said latch when the volume is in said cover, a wall which closes one end of said channel, there being apertures in said wall whereby a key operable through said wall may be used to disengage the latch.
9. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, means on said volume which engage beads on the side walls of said channel, a latch on said volume, means on said channel which engages said latch when the volume is in said cover, a wall which closes one end of said channel, there being apertures in said wall whereby a key may pass through said wall to disengage the latch.
10. The combination with a cover, of a channel fastened thereto, a bound volume, strips permanently secured thereto waich fit said channel, a pin in said channel, a spring latch secured to said volume, there being an aperture in said spring latch adapted to engage said pin, a wall which closes one end of said channel, there being apertures in said wall whereby a key having forks which fit said apertures may be inserted to disengage said spring latch from said pin.
