The present invention relates to binding de- 7 vices for sheets and moreespecially for magazines and periodicals although not confined to such materials. I
Among; the objects of the inventionis a binder which may be'quickly and easily applied 'to such materials to hold them-securely.-
Another object is a binder for magazines which while holding themsecurely and tightly nevertheless permits their being opened to substantially as flat-position as before b1nd'-' ing.
skilledin the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying.

Fig. 16 shows a portion of a magazine pre pared for binding; v
Fig. 17 is a perspective view modification.
The-binder shown in Figs. 1 t0 5 consists of two members telescoping to form a channel between the sides of which the backs of of a second 7 the magazines lie, which channel has inturned.
" and holding tabs 23 for the second member.
The second member as shown in Figs. 3 and Otherobjects will'readily-occur to those.
through a finished 4 consists of'a strip 25 of metal of such widtlr as to slide readily between sides 21. One end ofthis strip is turned. up and over to provide: a'niinturned flange. 26 and the other end is. provided with a- -tongne 27 adaptedto slide through a slot'28 in end: 22 of the first memberland bebentover to firmly secure the parts togetherj I 1 .The'fOIIn of device shown in Figs. 6 to 14 involves similar. principles but'is adjustable, to provide for different sizes and numbers of magazines. 7 I This form is made up of four members providing for adjustment in. both length and width. i
One ofthe members as shown. in Figs 6 and 7 consists of a strip 30.:of-metal having one edge31 turned up and one. end turned up andbent over at right angles-to form an inturned fiange'32 This turned up. end'is provided with'a slot 33 fora purpose-to bev described. Further theturned up. edge 31 is provided-with a tongue 34' forming a retaining 'guidefor: thesecond member. a
The second member. (Figs. Sand 9) isa' metal strip 40 ofslightly less widththan strip 30. This strip has one turned up edge 41 extending the length of its body portion and having a portion extending from one end constituting a tongue 42 adapted to pass through slot 32. The other end of strip'40 is turned up and over at right angles to form an inturned flange 43. n 1
. i The third member (Figs-1,0 and 11) consists ofa metal strip 50 having one edge 51 turned up as shownand one end turned up I and over at right angles to form an inturned flange 52. Y
The fourth member igs.-'12 and13) consists of a metal strip having one edge turned up and over to form a retaining guide 61 and one end turned up and over at right angles to form an inturned flange 62.
In-assembling the device from the four members, the strip 40 will be placed in the strip 30 with its edge 41 under the guide 34 and the tongue 42 through slot 33 to form one side of the binder. The strip 50 will then be placed in the strip 60 with its edge 51 under the guide 61 to form the other side. The latter side consisting of strips 50 and 60 will then be slipped laterally into the side formed of strips 30-and 40 with the flanges 52 and 62 under the flanges 43 and 32, respectively. Thisassembly is shown in Fig. 14.
When the length of the binder has been adjusted to .fit the magazines to be bound, the tongue i2 is preferably cut off to within a short distance of the end 32 and the remaining short end bent over to hold the parts secure.
The modification shown in Fig. 17 differs from that shown in Fig. 5 in that the member 25 does not extend the full length-of member 20 and the tongue 27 a is upon member 20'. WVhen the magazines are inserted in 7 Suitable decorative covers maybe applied to the binders and Fig. shows a section of the first mentioned form with such a. cover.
In this figure, the member is shown as having a piece of cloth 70 glued to the outside and a second piece "7 1 glued to the ins1de.' The free edges of these two pieces \Vlll be glued to opposite sides of two-stiffening members 72 as shown When it 1s desired to bind themagazines in I the devices shown, each magazine is provided with a notch in each of its ends near the back edge as indicated in Fig. 16, this figure representing the back corner of a magazine at.
80 with a notch at 81. These notches provide seats for the inturned flanges 22 and 26 and 32, 62, 43and 52, so that when the binding 1 devices are pressed together longitudinally the flanges enter the notches and hold securely the magazines. After the magazines: have been fitted into the binders with the tong'ue 27 c1242 extending out, the latter is bent over to make a substantially permanent binding.
7 Having now described the invention and the preferred forms of embodiment thereof,
it isto be understood that the said invention is notto be limited to the specific details hereinset forth, but only by the scope of the claims which follow.
= I claim 1 1. A binder for magazinesor the'like com prising two sections each having an inturned flange atone end, one of said seetionsalso having upturned sides and provided with guiding means for the other of said SQOtlOIlS, the other of said sections adapted to slide lon-h gitudinally Withinthe first, the inner section being provided with a tongue adaptedto pass through a slot in the end of the outer section and be bent overfto fix the relative position of the flanges.
2. .A binder for magazines or the like com- I prising two sections each having an inturned flange at one end, and being composed of two laterally adjustable parts one of said sections also having upturned sides and provided with guiding means forthe other of said sections,
' the other of said sections adapted to slide lon-j 'itudinally within the first, the inner section and be bent over to fix the, relative positions of the flanges; v
being provided with a tongue adapted to passe I through a slot in the end of theouter section HERMAN'T. ARENDs. i
