Description

Feb. 9, 1932. w. F. WELLS COMBINATION PENCIL SHARPENER AND ERASER Filed March 12, 1931 Patented Feb. 9, 1932 UNITEDSTATES WILLIAM I. WELLS, F CANKQN FALLS, MINNESOTA, 1,.
COMBINATION PENCIL sIrAnrnNEnA n nensnn Application filed March 12, 1931, swar 522,131,
This invention relates to writing and draft ing equipment, particularly for-the use of students and others who find it necessary to carry pencils, erasers, etc., about with them,
and the primary object is to provide a combination pencil sharpener and eraser, in which the sharpener unitis embedded and anchored in the erasin unit, the latter of which may be formed 0 rubber, art gum, or
other suitable material, with a result that the sharpener is not only less apt to become lost, as would otherwise be the case, but by being embedded in a substantially larger bodyunit, such as a large eraser, can be held and manipulated more efficiently and more easily than y when it is made as a separaterelatively small unit. Further and more specific objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of acombination pencil sharpener and eraser, embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4; is a perspective view of the sharpener unit before being embedded in the eraser unit, V Figure 5 is a fragmentary rear elevation of a slightly modified form, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 66 of Figure 5. i
Referring to the drawings more particularly and by reference characters, A designates a block of eraser material, in which, when formed, the sharpenerunit B comprises a conical member 4:, to receive the end of the pencil to be sharpened, and this member 4 is slotted as at 5 and provided adjacent the slot with a cutting blade 6, so that as the pencil is turned with respect to the unit the shavings cut by the blade will escape through a the slot. This method of sharpening is of course old in the art. In the present instance, however, it is necessary to expose certain parts of the sharpener, so that the pencil can be inserted and to permit the escape of shavings, and adjustments to the blade .6; and this must be done without substantiallylweakeningtheeraser block so that it would be inclinedto break in two. With these problems inmind I embed the sharpener unit with parts exposed as shown inthe drawings, andprovide theunit with integral oppositely extending anchor plates 7 and 8 that'project into theopposite ends of'the eraserblock A. These plates are also preferably provided with angular ears or flanges 9,
that are so arranged that they will not only embedded therein.
In Figures 5 and 6 is shown a modified construction in which the rear end of the sharp- M ener unitdesignated B is provided with a depending lip 11 that serves to additionally brace the unit B in the eraser block A.
It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the structure as disclosed, provided such modifications come within the So spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having now therefore fully illustrated and described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent IS: I
1. combination pencil sharpener and eraser comprising a block of eraser material and a pencil sharpening unit embedded in said block, and means extending from the unit and embedded in the block for anchoring do the unit therein.
2. A combination pencil sharpener and eraser comprising a block of eraser material and a pencil sharpening unit embedded in said block, and means extending from the unit 9'5 for anchoring the same in the block, said means comprising plate members rigid with and extending from the unit into the block. 7
3. combination pencil sharpener and eraser comprising a block of eraser material 1 and a pencil sharpening unit embedded in said block, said unit being provided with anchor plates extending to 0 posite sides thereof and embedded in said block for anchoring the unit therein.
4. A combination pencil sharpener and eraser comprising a block of eraser material and a pencil sharpening unit embedded in said block, said unit being provided with rigid plate extensions, and angular flanges on said plate extensions for anchoring engagement in the block.
5. A combination pencil sharpenerand eraser as in claim 4:, the rigid plate extensions and angular flanges being provided with openings to receive the eraser material.
6. A combination pencil sharpener and. eraser, comprising a block of eraser material and a pencil sharpening unit embedded in said block, said unit being provided with bracing members extending laterally of the unit, and a depending lip on one end of the unit and engaged by the material of the eraser.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM F. WELLS.
