Description
E. A. MORRISON LEVEL Filed June 28. 1929 Feb. 9, 1932.;
Invcnfor E .fljyormlson m t By M a v I Att orney Patented Feb. 9, 1932 PATENT OFFICE EDWARD A. MORRISON, ORANGE, NEW JERSEY LEVEL Application filed June 28,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in geometrical instruments and more particularly to a novel level of the pendulum type.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a level which canbe manufactured at a cost under those types of levels now on the market.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a level of the pendulum type which because of the durable and positive acting construction is not apt to develop defects or lose any of its fidelity as sometimes occurs in liquid levels.
These and numerous other important objects of theinvention will become more apparent to the reader after considering the invention as described and claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary side elevation of the improved level.
Figure 2 represents a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the improved 5 level.
Figure 3 represents a perspective view of the pendulum construction.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like numerals designate like parts, it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes the elongated stock which may be of wood or metal if desired.
The intermediate portion of the stock is bored to receive the geometrical element to be hereinafter described.
The through bore 6 is adapted to snugly receive the cylindrical tube 7 on which are suitable scale markings 8. A counterbore is provided at each end of the bore 6 and within each counterbore is arranged an annulus 9 provided with a spider construction for supporting a hub 10. Each of theannuli is secured to thestock by means of a screw 11.
A pane 12 issecured within each counterbore by means of an externally threaded rim 13. The pendulum is generally referred to by numeral 14 and consists in construction of a block 15 of suitable material and provided with a tapered extension 16 at each end thereof. iPintles 17 project from the 1929. Serial No. 374,475.
It will be seen that the present invention embodies a structure which possesses far more advantages than the more complicated types of levels now on the market, and in view of the extreme simplicity of the invention, its retail price may be far under the price of other types of levels and more within the economic demand of the public than the more costly and more complicated types.
While the foregoing description has been in definite terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the specific shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention asv claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a level construction of the character described, a stock, said stock being provided with an opening, a gauge, a shell for disposition within the opening to support the gauge, and an annulus secured to each side of the stock so as to circumvent theadjacent end of the opening, the inner edge portion of each annulus being substantially less in circumference than the opening so that the adjacent end of the shell will abut the annulus, a transparent pane for disposition over each end of the shell, and an externally threaded ring threadable into the stock at each end of the said opening for securing the corresponding pane against the adjacent annulus.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD A. MORRISON.
