Description

Patented Feb. 2, 1932 UNITED 'sr'.xrasA PATENT ,OFFICE A sHAvING APPARATUS 4 Application mea August 23, 1929, seria1 No.
My invention relates to improvements in shaving apparatus, and more particularly in shaving apparatus of the type comprising a frame or casing equipped with one or more longitudinal slots and a rotary drum, the said drum and one of the longitudinal walls of the slot providing the blades for cutting the hair. lThe object of the improvements 1s to provide an apparatus of this type in which the hairs bent laterally by one blade of the drum are cut by the next blade of the drum, and I with this obj ect in view my invention consists in providing a drum in which the edges of the successive blades are inclined relatively to the blade provided by the casing alternately in different directions. Thus, if a hair is bent laterally by an inclined blade it is safely caught and shorn by the next blade which is inclined in the opposite direction. Another apparatus in which two drums are contained in a, single frame or casing, the said drums rotating in opposite directions. Therefore the apparatus can be used in the manner of a razor by always moving the same in the same direction, for example downwardly across` the skin. Further, an object of the improvements is to construct the casing, and more particularly the comb formed thereon so that the hair to be shorn is rst bent outwardly and away from the skin, so that it is readily engaged by the blades. With this object in view my invention consists in providing the comb with a plane bearing face ending at its leading side in a shoulder disposed substantially perpendicularly to the 'said face, the notches of the comb being extended forwardly beyond the said shoulder. Thus the said perpendicular shoulder erects the hairs, which therefore pass in erected position between the notches of the comb.
Other objects of the improvements will appear from the following description.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shownv in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference -characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,
object of the improvements is to provide ank 387,852, and in Germany November 14, 1928.
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation showing the apparatus,
Fig. 2 is an elevation looking from the left in Fig. 1,
Figs. 3 to 5 are sectional plan views taken 55 respectively on the lines 3 3, 4.-4 and 5-5 of Fig. 1, and v Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale showing the cutting blades of thevcasing and drumand the comb.
In the example shown in the gures the apparatus comprises a frame or casing a made integral with a hub or handle u, the said frame or casing being open at both sides. On the said open sides of the casing substan- 65 tially semi-cylindrical caps l and f are re= movably mounted,l for example by means of hinges, lw and latches m. Within the casing two rotary cutters b and c in the form of Y drums and each comprising two curved 7o blades c are mounted in arms 0 guided in eyes p secured to or made integral with the casing or frame a. In the example shown in the figures the bearings for the said rotary cutters comprise removable bearing blocks m secured to the arms 0 and embedded in recesses n of the caps d, f, the said recesses being provided with elastic cushions nl of felt or the like providing elastic abutments for the bearing blocks m. The arms o are engaged by a conical pin g made integral with a screw r screwing in a hole of the wall of the casing a. Thus, by screwing the conical pin g more or less inwardly the arms o and the rollers b, c are pressed outwardly with the bearings m into yielding engagement with the cushions n1. In addition springs s are provided which tend to spread the arms 0 apart.
The caps al and f are formed with longitudinal slots g bounded at one side by straight '9u edges h and their opposite sides by combs i, the edges h providing the cutting edges of the casing cooperating with the blades c of the drums, and the combs i providing Guides for the blades le moving. towards the edges The combs z' are provided at their outer sides with large plane bearing faces l ending at the leading side of the apparatus in ,shoulders y disposed substantially perpendicularly to the faces 1. In the operation of the appara- 1,00
by the edge of one of the blades c, so that it is ndt shorn, it is safely engaged by the edge y of the next blade c.
To the aXes of the cutters b and c gear wheels 3 and 4 are secured, and the gear wheel 4 is in direct engagement with a gear wheel 5 carried by a driving shaft t mounted in the hub or handle u, while the gear wheel 3 is connected with the gear wheel 5 through the in termediary of an idle wheel fv. Thus the cutters b and o are rotated in opposite directions.
By removingthe caps d and fthe cutters b and c can be readily removed from the apparatus for cleaning the same, the arms o remaining in position in the eyes p.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows:
rllhe cutters b and c are rapidly rotated from the shaft t, and the apparatus is passed with one of the faces z'1 across the skin. Thereby the shoulder y erects the hairs which pass into the notches of the comb i and are engaged between the cutting edge h of the casing and the edges of the blades c. The rotating blades k are guided on the inner curved faces of the fingers of the comb z', so that any injury to the skin is prevented. The exact position of the blades k relatively to the comb z' and the edge h is obtained by forcing the pin g more or less inwardly and between the arms o.
By providing cutting edges at both sides of the apparatus the apparatus can be passed y across the skin always in the same direction.
lln the construction shown in the figures the cutting edges of the casing are made integral with the caps d, f, and the blades c are made integral with the bodies of the cutters 6,12. But I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to these features, and that in some cases exchangeable edges and cutters are provided. By the manner of mounting the cutters b and c on the arms o the cutters bear on the caps d and 7 with uniform pressure. VIn some cases l provide independent supporting means for the bearings.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same ll wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and that various changesmay be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the conaeaaaao struction of its parts without departing from the invention.
