Description

Patented Feb. 2, 1932 warren era-res mane ra'rsnr ea-rice LLOYD F. SCHRADER, OF RICHMOND HILL, AND FRED P. HART, OF WHITESTONE, NEW
YORK, ASSIGNOBS, BY LIESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0 SEMET-SOLVAY ENG-INEEBINGOOR- FORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK GUT-OFF DEVICE Application filed June 23,
The invention provides an improved de vice for shutting 05 gas, especially applicable between the gas o'fi-take pipe and the collecting main of a coke oven battery.
The single figure of the drawing represents a vertical section of one embodiment of the invention. a
The gases from the distillation ovens o-r carbonized chambers pass upward through a pipe 1 with a cap 2 at the top. A downwardly inclined discharge pipe 3 leads out of the top of the riser 1 and carries at the top a spray pipe 4 which introduces cooling liquor into the gas. The pipe 3 is connected at its lower end to an extension 5 which forms a casing or pocket for a liquor seal and drainage valve. The end wall 6 of this casing abuts against the side of the collecting main 7 into which the gas is to be passed, the casing being fastened to the main by means of a flange 8.
In the upper part of the end wall 6 there is an opening 9 registering with an opening 10 in the main. At an intermediate point within the casing there is a downward projection from the upper wall in the form of a partition or plate 11 extending across the casing and downward to a level below the openings 9 and 10. The liquor from the spray will accumulate in the bottom of the casing 5 and rise to the level indicated at 12, after which it will overflow through the opening 9 without disturbing this level, thus maintaining a seal to cut off the passage of gas.
In the lower part of the casing 5 there is a tubular passage 13 communicating with the main through an opening 14 and adapted to communicate through a port 15 with the bottom of the casing. The port 15 is opened or closed by means or a drainage valve 16 operated by a stem 17 extending through the top of the casing and through a stufiing box 18 4 carried thereon.
While the valve 16 is held open, the liquor will drain out through the passage 13 into the main, leaving the larger passage clear through the openings 9 and 10 for the gas to flow freely. When the gas is to be cut oil the valve 16 is closed and the liquor will ac- 1928. Serial No. 287,764..
cumulate and form a seal to prevent the'gas from passing.
The passageway 13 has at its outer end a screw plug 19, the removal of which gives access for cleaning out any accumulated sediment from the liquor. r a
It will be noted that plug 19 is accessible from the outside of the casing and consequently ready access to the passage 13 may be had from the exterior of the casing for cleaning purposes.
Various other modifications may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the invention as defined in the following claims: 7
