The invention relates to new and usefnl improveinents in bags, and more particu{n ly to a means useful in the closing of the bag.

These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bag having the improved fold line producing means applied thereto with the bag mouth folded and secured by a line of stitching.

The invention is directed 'to a bag which may be made of any material, but preferably of paper. It is very desirable that the bag mouth portion be folded along certain lines for the most eflective closing of the bag. It 1s n0t always easy to fold the bag mouthportion, particularly when the bag is made of paper, for directing the same to a closing means such as a stapling means or a stitching means for securing the bag mouth. The present invention is directed to a means which may be attached to the bag and become a part thereof, which means may be utilizedror insuring the folding of the mouth =cur1ng means may be passed through the folds in the bag mouth for effectively closing the bag.

In another form of the invention, this strip is of considerably-greater width and is scored along lines which will determine the lines of fold.

In still another form of the invention, a

series of strips are used and the fold lines will necessarily form in between the strips. Referring more in detail to the drawings,

the invention is shown as applied to a bag 1 which is of the usual construction. Said bag may be made of paper, fabri, or any other suitable material, but the invention is particularly adapted to a bag which is made of paper. Attached to the bag 'at a distance back from the mouth thereof is a. strip 2 which, as "shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is

in the form of a heavy paper strip.- This strip may be made of fabric or it may be in the form of a strip of glu e, as indicated at 3 in Fig. 5. The extreme edge of the bag mouth is indicated at 4 in the drawings. The bag mouth is first folded along the line 5, 5 at the lower side -of the strip 2. Fig. 6 shows this first fold in the bag mouth, the bag being reversed before it is folded. The ortion of the bag mouth 6 extending beyon the str1p 2 is next folded along the line 77 as indicated in Fig. 7. This fold lineis determined by the top edge of the strip 2 asviewed in Fig. 5. The remaining portion 6 of the bag mouth is then folded over the initial foid in the bag mouth as indicated inF1g. 8 and his fold line is likewise determmed by the line 55 at the edge of the strip 2. There are three fold limes which are determined by the placing of the strip 2. provides an emclosihg bimding extending about the mouth of the bag. The securing meams, as shown in Fig. 1, consists of a line of stitchimg 8 which passes through the folded portions of the bag mouth and also through the strip 2. This strip'2 serves as a rein forcing means to prevent the tearimg out of the holding means and to create a more efliciemt closure for the bag. The strip which determines the foldlines is com'pletelyhoused within-th olded bag mouth. As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the strip for determinima; the fold limes is much wider. The strip is indicated at 9. Said strip is provided with scole limes 10, 10 and 11, 11. In Fig. 4 of the drawings the fold determining meams consists of three spaced strips 12, 13 and 14. The first fold line, in the construction shown in Fig. 3 is determined by the lower edge of the strip, the mext fold line is determined by the score line 10, 10; and the last fold line is determined by the score line 11. 11.

In the structure shown in Fig. 4, the first fod line is determimed by the lower edge of the strip 12, the second fold line is determined by the space between the strips 12 and 13 ;.and the third fold line is determinedby the space between the strips 13 and 14.

Im both forms of structure shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the strips Will be placed so that the holding. meams passes through al. three sectioms othe strips in Fig. 3, and all three strips in Fig. 4. Thus it is that the bag" m0uth is further reinforced by these strips which serve as additional meams for embedding the holding meams and preventing its heing torm out.

In all forms of the invention, it Will be noted that there is applied to the bag so as to become a permanent part thereof, means for insuring thefolding of the mouth portien of the bag along three parallel limes in succession, which limes are so disposed relative to the open end as to form from the bag material a closing bimdimg for the bag mouth extemdimg from one sidewall ofthe bag to the other. This is particularly useful in connection with 3. machine for closing na 8, as the bag mont-h Portion may be folded quickly and uniformly so as to properly close the hag and may ce s cured by a holding means passed through said folded parts of the bag mouth. These strips for predetermining the fold limes, as noted, may be made of paper, fabric, glue, or any other suitable material, but it is desirable that it shall be a means which may be easily perfo rated so that a stitching mechanism may be used for closing the bag. When a single strip is used, it Will insure that the first fold in the bag mouth Will he made at a suificient distance back from the extreme edge of the bag mouth so as to provide sufliciemt material of the bag for the folding of said bag mouth so as to enclose the bag mouth whereby when the securing meams is passed thwngh the folded portions of the bag mouth th r is no chance of any material being allowed to eSf3pe from-the closed mouth.

It will be mdarstood,of course, that f1om certain aspects -of the imvemtiom,:other ways -of folding the bag mouth may be found use ful, and the invention is mot limitedto the particular way-showm and described for-f.old-

A paper bag adapted to be closed by stilching comprising a body portion having an open end, said body portion having means separte from the bag material secured thereto and foldable therewith, said means being arranged for insurimg the folding andreverse foldiig of the mouth of the bag along three paralel limes in succession so disposed relative to said open end that said attaching meams vrill form from the bag material a closing binding f for the bag mouth extemding from one si de wall of the bag to the other, said fold forming meams being disposed on one face of each fcld and forming an anchorage for the stitching threads.
