process, the residue which remains in the billet container after the extruding operation has been completed.
in the extrusion of articles, for instance tubes, from billets by the Dick hot extrusion process, there remains, in the billet container and against the top of the matrix die, a residue of material, generally taking the form of a flange, which residue remains attached to the extruded tube and must be removed. Such residue, furthermore, must be removed from the billet container preparatory to another extruding operation. Various means have from time to time been employed for the removal of this extrusion residue, the most commonly used of which have required a sequence of operations involving the loss of a great deal of time. For example, one usual means of removing the billet requires that the securing means for the die holder be released, that the die holder and matrix die be removed from their place in the press, that the residue be then severed from the tube, that the matrix die and die holder be then replaced, and finally that the die holder be again secured in position. Other methods of removing the residue, while available where the residue has been relatively thin and not of a relatively hard material, have not been satisfactory where a heavy residue of hard material is to be removed.
With these conditions in view, it is the principal object of my invention to provide an apparatus for severing extrusion residue which will not only be simple and easy to use and require the expenditure of but little time, but will also perform its required operations satisfactorily with the heavier residues of hardmetal that are met with under modern hot extrusion practice.
By way of example, I have shown in the accompanying drawings, and described in the following specification, one form of apparatus for removing extrusion residue constructed in accordance with my invention. I wish it understood, however, that my invention may be embodied in other constructional forms, and that changes may be'made in the form described and shown, without exceeding the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a single-acting, crank-operated extrusion press having combined therewith residue-removing apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention, the actuating portion of such apparatus being shown in the position it occupies just before being swung into operative position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the residue-removing apparatus as swung into operative position and secured therein; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional front elevation showing the parts in the same position as in Fig. 2, except that the actuating device has been perated so as to sever the residue.
While the extrusion press employed might be of any one of a number of kinds, that chosen for illustration is crank-actuated and comprises a frame 1, at the lower part of which is located a table 2, which supports the container 10 for the billet which is to be extruded, in the bottom of which container the matrix die 11 is placed. Mounted to reciprocate in the frame 1 is a head 7 from which extends downwardly the extruding ram 8 and piercing mandrel 9. The reciprocatin movements of the head 7 are obtaine through the agency of a crank 4 mounted upon a suitably operated crank shaft 3, such crank being connected by a rod 5 and ball and socket joint 6 with the extruding head. A billet is placed in the container whereupon the head 7 descends to cause, first, the mandrel 9 to pierce the billet, and second, the ram 8 to extrude it through the matrix die 11. Thereby the tube 6, is formed, on the end of which will be left the residue a.
For the purpose of removing the residue from the tube, a power-actuated chisel is employed, such chisel being separated from the power-drive device for actuating it in the particular form of my invention chosen for description and illustration, though such separation of the chiselform its operating means is not essential.
The chisel herein shown includes a stem 12 having thereon a ring 12a of a diameter to fit the interior of the container, thereby to guide the chisel vertically. At its lower end the chisel stem is reduced so as to form a point 12?; adapted to enter the extruded tube, and above such point is formed with a small ring 120, above which again is a reduced neck 12d. When the chisel is driven downwardly with respect to the extruded tube, from the position shown in Fig. 1, the ring 120' is forced through the residue a and shears out the end of the tube therefrom, pushing the end of the tube through the aperture of the matrix die (Fig. 3). After this has taken place, the residue contracts upon the neck 12d and consequently is removed with the chisel when the latter is withdrawn.
The power required to be applied to the chisel is frequently extremely great, though much smaller thanthat required for the severing operation proper. To provide for this, I have combined with the extrusion press a subsidiary hydraulic press for actuating the chisel, though I contemplate that other devices capable of exercising the required power can be employed in place of such hydraulic press.
The hydraulic press which I have illustrated is carried by a pair of arms 14: which are pivoted to the frame 1 of the press, at the back thereof. Such press includes a cylinder 13 having pipes 19 and 21 at the ends thereof communicating with the source of supply of operating fluid. In the cylinder is mounted a piston 17, the plunger 18 whereof projects out through the bottom of the cylinder.
Secured to the press frame is an abutment 15 adapted to be engaged by one of the arms 14 when the actuating device is swung back out of the way as indicated in Fig. 1, theereby supporting the device in such inoperative position. After the extrusion operation has been completed and the chisel has been introduced into the billet container, the hydraulic device is swung over into the position shown in Fig. 2, when the lower end of its plunger 18 rests upon the top of the chisel. To hold the actuating device in place against the upward pressure resulting from the pressure of the plunger upon the chisel, a latch 16 pivoted to the front of the press frame is provided. This latch is adapted to be swung upward so as to engage over a nose 16a,
. formed upon the front of the cylinder 13.
lVhen the actuating device has thus been swung into operative position and latched therein, fluid under pressure is admitted to the pipe 19 whereby the chisel is hydaulically forced downward to pass through the residue (1 and sever the same from the tube (Fig. 3). Thereafter, the actuating device is released and swung back out of the way and the chisel is withdrawn, carrying with it the residue, which is subsequently removed.
It will be observed that by the above-described apparatus it is possible to remove the residue with great rapidity, the operation of inserting and withdrawing the chisel and swinging the actuating device into and out of position taking but little time. It is to be noted further that the apparatus makes it possible that the relatively great power necessary to sever the residue be quickly and easily applied.
I claim:
1. The combination with an extrusion press including a billet container having a die associated therewith at one end thereof, and an extruding tool disposed in line with said container, of a tool for removing extrusion residue and adapted to be inserted into the other end of said billet container in the line with said extruding tool, and poweroperated means for actuating said tool, said power-operated means being movably associated with said container so as to be removable out of the path of said extruding tool to permit operation of the latter during extrusion.
2. The combination with an extrusion press including a billet container having a die associated therewith at one end thereof, and an extruding tool disposed in line with said container, of a chisel for removing extrusion residue, said chisel being adapted to be inserted into said container from the other end thereof in line with said extruding tool, and power-operated means, associated with said container-for movement into and out of line with said extruding tool, for engaging an end of said chisel to actuate the same.
