IMPROVEMENT IN FENcEs.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,137, dated November '7, 1876; application filed April 15, 1816.

To all 'whom it may concern: v

Be it known that I, SOLOMON Bono, of Danbury, in the county of Wilkes, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description-thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

. The nature of my invention consists in the mode of connecting the rails of a fence, and supporting and bracing the same, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specificatimFigure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a cross-section.

In the figures, A A represent two fenceposts, which are not buried in the ground, but which stand upon it in a vertical position, at a sufficient distance apart to allow the ends of the rails to be inserted between them. B B represent the rails, which I `usually construct about ten feet in length. The ends of these rails are inserted between `the posts, da by side, and rest upon the cross-pieces When the fence is built as high as the top of the posts, by consecutive rails and crosspieces, Iuse a cross-bar, G, which is bolted or nailed upon the top of the two posts, A A, to prevent them from spreading.

After this has been done, I use two long rails or poles, which may extend the length of only two panels or more. The longer the poles the better, but they should cover at least two panels. The first pole Dis placed upon the cross-bars G G. I then take two braces, FF, and cross them over this pole. I then placethe second pole, E, in the crotch or fork of the braces.

The lower ends of the braces may then be brought together until their inner sides bear very tightly against the lower pole, and their outer sides against the upper pole, and then they may have their lower ends driven slightly in the ground;or theirvweight will keep them in place. By this arrangement of the poles and braces the fence-panels are bound together longitudinally, and are securely braced laterally, thus making a cheap and substantial fence, which may be either zigzag or straight.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the. posts A, crosspiece c, cappieces G, and rails B, of the inclined braces F, rider E, and pole D, the latter being secured between cap-pieces G and the braces F, in the manner described, for bracing the panels, substantially as set forth.
