This invention relates to operators for casement windows and it is an objectof the invention to provide a device of'this kind which, when in applied positiomcfiers 'no undue hindrance or obstructionto the application of ascreen to the casement frame.
The invention also has for an object to provide a device of this kind whereby the window may be readily adjusted from fully closed to fully open position or vice versa and to desired points therebetween, and
means for effectively locking the window in its desired adjustment.

Anchored at the required position upon'the lower member 4 of the casement window W is a .bracket structure 5 provided with a pair of outstanding and vertically spaced arms 6. Extending between the outer extremities of the arms 6 and pivotally connected thereto, as at '7,is an outstanding arm 8 carried by an end'portion of a sliding or operating bar 9. This bar 9 is straight from end to end'and is tubular and of across sectional configuration to provide a T-slot 10. The restricted or stem portion a of the slot 10 is open at the under or bottom wall of the bar 9. Secured to the "lower member 11 ofthe frame F i's a bracket B preferably comprising a plate12 which has direct contact with the member 11 andanchored thereto. The upper marginal portion of the plate 12 is definedby an out standing plate 14. The outer longitudinal marginal portion of this plate. 14 is upwardlyoifset, as at 15, to provide an inner shoul The bracket B providesa support for the applied, screen S. The lower member of the bracket B seats upon the plate 14 inwardly of the shoulder b.
The plate 14, and more particularly the 01?- set portion 15 thereof, is provided at a desired point therealong with the forwardly directed shelf orplatform 16, the outer end portion .0 of which being semi-circular and concentric to an opening 17 disposed through said shelf or platform 16.
Snugly and rotatably' fitting within this opening 17 is a cylindrical shank 18 which extends through the restricted portion or stem of the T-slot 10 in the res or bar9 shelf or platform 16 and in close'contact U therewith. Threaded or otherwise engaged 1 with the outer end of the extension 20 isa headed member 23 which serves to maintain both the shank 18 and the plate 22 in applied position. i
Radiating from the plate 22 is an arm 24 provided with a finger piece 25 positioned beyond the periphery of the semi-circular portion 0 of the shelf or platform 16 whereby the shank 18 may be rotated at will for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to.
The. head 19 hereinbefore referred to is provided with diametrically opposed paral lel straight edges 26 spaced apart'a distance less than the space between the side walls 27 of the bar 9 but in excess of the width ofthe restricted portion or stem a of the slotlO.
When the shank 18 is adjusted to have these straight edges 26 of the head 19 sub stantially parallel to the side walls 27 of the bar9, said bar 9 has free endwise movement and at the same time has desired swinging movement. When it is desired, however, to lock the bar 9 against endwise movement and thus effectively hold the window W in its desired adjusted position. it is only necessary to rotate the shank 18 through the instrumentality of the fin er piece 25 and plate 22 to bring the curved portions 28 of the head .19 into binding contact with the sidewalls 27. of the bar 9, it being understood that said curved portions 28 are spaced'apart a distance inexcess of the space between the opposed faces of said side walls 27'. The outer end portion of the 9 has suitably secured thereto a handle 29 disposed on a curvature to facilitate engagement therewith of the digits of a hand.
'When the window W isfully closed, the
arms 6 are disposed over the bracket B and through the cut-out portions or notches 2 and a and the bar 9 is in a position substantially in parallelism with the lower member 11 of the frame F.
When it is desired to open the window l/V outward swinging movement is imparted to the outer end of said bar 9 preferably by grasping with the fingers the handle 29. This swinging movement causes the opposite end portion of the bar 9 to swing inwardly towards the frame F resulting in such leverage action to assure an easy initial outward swinging movement of the window W.
'During this operation the shank 18 provides a pivot for the bar 9 and by sliding the bar9 through the cut-out portions or notches 2.and 2' the window W may be adjusted to fully open position or at any desired point, and'when adjusted as required the window is effectively locked by imparting requisite turning movement to the shank 18 independently of the bar 9 by'either push or pullupon the finger piece 25. To, close the window W such operation is reversed.
It is to be understood that as the window moves either outwardly or inwardly, the plate 3 will have requisite sliding movement 1 thus assuring a substantial closing of the cut-out portion 2 of the member 1 at all times to avoid the passage of flies, dust and the like therethrough. As before stated, this particular feature'of the plate 3 is embodied in my pending application hereinbefore identifiedr It is to be noted that the vbar 9 is substantially shallow and flat on top and the construction of the bracket B is such that when the device is in applied position a minimumof space is occupied thereby so that the portion of the applied device and more particularly of the bar 9 projecting abovethe lower member 11 of the frame F is negligible. This is of particular importance as it permits the screen S to be readily applied to the frameF whenthe upper marginal portion of said screen or a side marginal portion thereof is used as a fulcrum in connection'with the frame F and swing the screen S into desired applied or working position.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an operator for acasement window constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted foruse by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reasonl do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation. of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice ex cept as hereinafter claimed.
