The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of washing-machines, and to render their operation more easy and complete. To that end my invention consists in the arran genient of the several parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, A represents the case for A containing the clothes, which is made of wood and in an arc shape, as shown in Fig. 1, and is pivoted at its center to an upright frame, B, so as to admit of a free and easy tilting or rocking movement, and is provided on the bottom of the interior thereof with a series of transverse ribs, a, and upon each side with vertical ribs 0 permanently attached to the walls of the case and at a uniform distance each from the other.
C G are curved springs located at each end of the frame, and upon each side thereof, and are permanently attached at one end to the base of the frame, and extend upward therefrom to and in contact with the lower surface of the case. The object of said springs is to support the case in a horizontal position when at rest, and to facilitate the rocking of the case when in motion.
D represents the opening through which the clothes are introduced into the case, and D the opening through which the suds are removed from the case. The said openings are so arranged as to admit of being tightly closed by means of suitable doors, so as to prevent the steam from escaping from the case. E E are handles for impartinga rocking movement to the case, and are permanently attached to the upper surface of the case at or near its ends.
In operating my said improved washingmachine a suflicient amount of hot water or suds is introduced into the case. The articles or clothes to be washed are deposited therein, and the door tightly closed. The operator then imparts a rockingmovement to the case, when the gravity of the clothescauses them to fall from one end of the case to the other alternately, and so as to bring the clothes in contact with the ribs on the walls of the case, and thereby produce the requisite friction against the clothes to remove the dirt therefrom.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the case A pivoted to the frame B and provided with the series of ribs a and o, of the springs O O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
FRIEDRICH GEORGE TANK.
