Y., A COR- PORATION OF DELAWARE METALLIC sIe NB'oARn Application filed May 15, 1330. Serial No 452,573.
, his invention relates to metallic sign boards.
Its object is to provide a simple structure of attractive appearance for supporting and protecting signs of paper or other material which may be placed thereon. More specifi- Cally the object of this invention is to provide a board having a plane surface upon which paper signs may be pasted, having a framelike border which enhances the appearance of the sign and protects it from the elements.
A further object is to so make the device of a single piece of sheet metal that it is stifiened and reenforced to such an extent that a comparatively thin material may be used tomake a strong and rigid structure.
Referring to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a corner of a sign board which is made according to my invention:
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevationof the structure shown in Fig. 1, the section'being taken on the line 22 of the latter figure;
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the device shown in the preceding figures;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a corner of a sign board of modified construction which also embodies this invention; and g V v Fig. 5 is a plan view of ablank from which the device shown in Fig. 4 is made.
10 is a flat base around the edges of which is a raised flange. The metal may be stamped or pressed to form this flange as shown at 11 in Figs. 1 and 2, or folded or bentto form it as shown at 11A in Fig. 4. The part 12' ne'rs.
face parallel-with the base 10.
(Figs. 1 and part 13 a flat 2) is a bevelled face and the One of the edges 14 of the metal is bent back under the face 13 and thebase 10. Another edge 15 is similarly bent back under the edge 14, the face 13 and the base 10. These parts may be spot-welded as indicated at 16, 16.
When the device is to be made as shown in Fig. 4, the corners of the blank are first cut out, as shown in Fig. 5. Then it is folded on the dotted lines, shown in Fig. 5, into the shape shown in Fig. 4. The edge portionsv 14 and 15 may be spot-welded together and to the base 10, as in the other construction, and
to form adownwardly sloping faceportion around it, the edges of which, adjacent the I and lS we-lded together where edges of. the sign,iare raised. This protects the sign from injuryand from the effects of the elements. ,The form of the border with its raised flange l1, reenforcing face portion 12 and under-folded edges 14, 15, makes a stiff,
rugged structure. This is still further stiifencd at the corners bythe fact that the meeting edges of. the flanges and. of the surfaces 12 and 13' are united by'the overlapping ends of the parts- 14 and 15 which are welded together and to the base 10. i
WVhat I claim is t i 1 LA-sign board constructed of'sheet metal comprising a base, a flange bent up from the base having edges, eachedge being extended .70
to downwardly sloping face portion extending outwardly from the top of the flange, and an edge portion bent back under said' faceportion and extending under the base, the abutting edges of the flanges and of the face portions at the corners being united. A. sign board constructed of sheet metal comprising abase, a flange bent up from the base having edges, eachedge beingextended eXte-nd'ing T outwardly from the. top; :ofthe flange, and an edge portion bent back under saidface'. portion and extending under the jbase,.the abuttingedges of the flanges and of the face portions at the corners being united and the edge portionsoverlappi'ng at the cor- 3. 4. A sign board constructed of sheet metal comprising abase, a flange bent up from the ion base having edges, each edge being extended to form a downwardly sloping face portion extending outwardly from the top of the flange, a flat face portion extending beyond the sloping face portion, and an edge portion bent back under the flat face portion, the sloping faceportion and extending under the base.
5. A sign board constructed of sheet metal comprising a base, a flange bent up from the base having edges, each edge being extended to form a downwardly sloping face portion extending outwardly from the top of the flange, a flat face portion extending beyond the sloping face portion, and an edge portion bent back under the flat face portion, the sloping face portion and extending under and affixed to the base. r

7. A' sign board constructed of sheet metal Y comprising a base, a flange bent up from the base having edges, each edge being extended to form a downwardly sloping face portion extending outwardly from the top of the flange, a flat face portion extending beyond the sloping face portion, an edge portion bent back under the flat face portion, the sloping face portion and extending under the-base,
the abutting edges of the flanges and of the face portions at the corners being united, and the edge portions overlapping at the corners. 8. A sign board constructed of sheet metal comprising a base, a flange bent up from the base having edges, each edge being extended to form a downwardly sloping face portion extending outwardly from the top of the flange, a flat face portion extending beyond the sloping face portion, an edge portion bent back under the flat face portion, the slopln face portion and extending under the base, t e abutting edges of the flanges and of the face portions at the corners being united,
andthe edge portions overlapping at the cor ners and welded together and to the'base.
