IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF LEATHER HOSE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,876, dated October 31, 1876; application filed October 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARWOOD WAKEMAN, ofthe city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Leather Hose, of which the following is a specification:
Leather hose is usually made of strips of leather rolled up, lapped, and united by one or two rows of rivets. In order to render the hose water-tight at the joint it has been usual to introduce the rivets closely together; hence the .hose is comparatively rigid, and does not roll-up easily, and is liable to injury in handling. My invention is made for rendering the joint water-tight, and allowing for the use of a less number of rivets; hence the hose will be more flexible and durable.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a crosssection of the hose complete. Fig. 2 is a section of the leather ready to be locked together at the edges, and Fig. 3 represents the leather ready to be bent up or placed together for forming the hose.
The opposite surfaces of the leather that come together as the lap is formed are undercut or channeled to form the hooking-lips a b,
, running longitudinally at a sufficient distance from the edge to allow for these lips interlocking. in the form shown when the parts are lapped. By this construction the edges of the tongues are received into the channels and compressed by the closing of the lap and the riveting of the same together. It is impossible for water to escape past these tongues; hence it is only necessary to introduce the rivets at the proper distance apart to insure the strength necessary to withstand the pressure.
If desired, india-rubber or other cement may be applied to the surfaces of the interlocking tongues.
The joint between one length of leather and the next is usually made diagonal and secured by rivets. I provide the interlocking tongues also upon the contiguous surfaces of this joint.
I claim as my invention- Leather hose provided with the interlocking tongues, standing in opposite directions upon the surfaces of the laps which come into contact, substantially as set forth.
