Patented Dec. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES PAFTE NT OFFICE RALPHIE. KIMBALL, or conAoromsnnn JOHN LEwIs, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYL- VANIA, assrenons To MOCLIl I'IIG-MABSHALL COMPANY, oF ITTsBUR-en, PENN- .1; sYLvAnIe, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA IMPRINT MOUNTING FOR ouTnooa ADVERTISING STRUCTURES v Application filed May 3,-1930 Serial No. 449,339.
Our invention relatesto detachable supporting means designed to be employed in connection with outdoor'advertising structures for mounting or supporting. imprints,-
i. e., plates or members bearing the name of the advertising company that erects and maintains the structure. I u p These imprints are mountedabove-the advertising structure by means of parts or mem- Y bers secured to the structure,=and projecting upwardly therefrom.' These means, as
heretofore constructed and the manner of at- The prime object of our inventionis to provide simple and'efiicient detachable imprint supporting means of, a character that may be employed for supporting imprints of the same or of varying dimensions and that maybe readily attached to and removed from the structure with a considerablejsaving in time, labor and expense over prior art methods: .i.
Our invention will be readily understood from the following description takenin connection with the accompanying drawings,
YY ,Fig. 4,-a' similarview, showingan application'to larger capping thanthat shown by F1g. 3; Y
. Fig. 5, a rear elevational view of a'form of imprint; r I
Fig; 6, aperspective view of arbracket of the supporting meansm' Referring'to the drawings, we
our invention applied to a'metallic outdoor advertising structure comprising'a plurality of considerable her for said signboard topermit the suspenhave shown of sheet metal poster panels a and a surrounding molding constr-uction' generally designated .A, Said panels and molding construction are securedto ametal framework structure in any suitable manner, as
will be readily understood. A portionof the metal framework or framing is shown in the drawings, and includes vertical posts or uprights 2 and horizontal members or rails 3,
preferably formed of angle irons, and secured together by means of bolts 4.
r In the form of Fig. 2, the molding construction A comprises a combined molding 5 and, capping 6 formedof sheet metal bent into the desired shape. Members or brackets 7 areprovided for attaching said molding and capping to. the structure, the brackets 7 1n turn being secured to the frameworkin any suitablemanner (not shown). As illusto reinforce and providea strong top memsion of staging or the like therefrom;
The means for supporting and mounting an imprint B above the capping 6, in such .a
manner as to be readily visible from the front of thesignboard, includes a plurality of spaced-apart supports or brackets 9, each having an upper imprintreceiving portion 10 formed with elongated or slotted openings 11, the latter being designed to receive 1 8 bolts 12 passed through openings 11a in a face ofthe imprint and carrying anut 13.
The lower or attaching portion 14 of each bracket is oflset, as at 15, and is provided with an opening 14a therethrough to receive aJ-bolt 16 for adjustably securing said portion to the member 3 of theframework.
Immediately above the offset 15, or formed in the intermediate portion 15a of the irregularly shaped member 9, is an opening 17 designed to receive a bolt 18. When the bracket 9 is in position, as shown, the'opening 17 is directly below the lower edge of a flange of the channel 8. A washer 19 on the bolt 18 serves to engage said flange and the bracket,
thereby providing a binding or clamping action when said bolt is tightened.
By means of our invention, it will be understood that the construction described permits of an adjustable spacing of said brackets longitudinally of tie sign'boarda'nd member 3 to accommodate different lengths of imprint, without necessitating openings being formed in the capping; also, that the slotted openings 11 provide foradjustability to 'accommodate variations of bolt holesin the imprint. In other words, the diiierentsized imprints cause avariation in the'verti'cal spacing of the bolt openings 11a therein, and with the construction described, they may be readilyattached to the signboard without drilling other openings.
Inthe event that-the channel 8 is omitted fromthe construction, it will bereadilyseen that the washer 19 may be-applied to-a rearwardly depending flange-of-the capping (not shown) ,-there'by-securing-the bracket 9 thereto by-means of the bolt 18.
Simple and eilicientdetachable andadjustable-imprint supporting means are highly desirable in the art, for the reason that the outdoor advertisingstructures areusually of portable construction and are elected many times making it'necessary to have adjustable means for attaching imprints or the like, to compensate for variations due to erection, as well .asdiiierent sizes of theimprints or other attachments.
In Fig. 3 ofthe drawings, we have :shown a modification of our invention for application thereof. .to Wooden'cappingfia. Tothis end, theportion 15a ofthe bracket9 is-formed with an opening 19a for receiving a wood screw 20, said-opening-being so located as to permit the screw to be entered into the-cap ping 6a.
In some instances, a wider capping is re quired, for example,.capping 6b of Fig. 4;, although our invention may be equally adapted to;an extended sheet metal capping. It will be'seenthat-the bracket 9 maybe readily applied thereto bymerely'reversingthe same, tlie-oliset 15 providing for the diiferencein width ofthe capping.
In all formsof our invention, weemploy the J-bolts lfi each having a nut 6 on an end thereof. Tl1is character of bolt may be applied at any desired point on the member 3 andthe brackets "9 spaced and secured to member 3 at the points desired.
As illustrated andas above described, the imprintis made ofmetal. In some instances, however, imprints are formed entirely of wood'or partly of woodand partly of metal; in either event it will be understood that one mounting may be advantageously employed.
2. 'In an outdoor advertising structure, the combination with asupporting framing having a horizontally extending member, of a top molding, an imprint associated therewith, means for d'etachably mounting the imprint on the structure including'an'irregulan lyshaped bracket member having an upper imprint-receiving portion provided with openings, means for detachably securing "the imprint to said portion, an aperturedlower oifset portion, means for securingthe-bracket inember to the top molding, and a boltoverlapping the horizontal member of'the framing to adjustably secure the offset portion thereto.
3. In an outdooradvertising structure, the combination with asupporting framing'having =a.horizontally extending member, of 'a top panel molding, an imprint associated therewith and disposed above'the molding, means for adjustably mounting the imprint including an irregularly shaped bracket member having an upper imprint receiving portion, a lower oilset attaching portion, and a moldingeabutting'portion, each of sai'dportions liavingan opening therein, andattaehing means passed through said openingsffor respectively engaging the imprint, molding andthe horizontally'extending member.
4. In'combinatiom'a signboard, a supporting structure therefor having a transverse framing member in the rear of the signboard,
said signboard having a portion K outwardly ofsaid member and extending'to. the rear of the plane of the forward edge of the said member, an imprintsupporting bracket, and means securing said bracket against said portion and to'said member for adjustment along the same.
5. In combination, a signboard, a support 'ing structure therefor 'havinga transverse framing memberin the rear of the signboard, said signboard havinga portion outwardly of said member and-extending to the rear of the plane ofthe forward edge ofthe said member, an imprint supporting bracket, and means securing said'bracket againstthe rear surfaces of said member and said portion.
6. In combination, a signboard, a supporting structure therefor 'havingta transverse framing member in the rear ofthe signboard, said signboard having-a portion outwardly of said member and extending to the rear of the plane of the forward edge of the said member, an imprint supporting bracket, means supported on top of the framing member having hook-engagement With the said forward edge to secure said bracket to the member, and means securing the bracket to said portion.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures.
