Patented Dec. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY ZOLL, OF ELMHURST, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR 'IO EBERHARD FABER PENCIL ('30.,
A CORPORATION OF YORK Box Application filed Ma 1;
This invention relates in general to boxes or packages and more particularly to a box of the type including a body section and a tubular cover or closure section telescopically 5 slidable upon said body section, for example,
as shown in United States Patent No. 1,631,- 595 dated June 7, 1927.
One object of the invention is to provide a box of the general character described having novel and improved means for illustrating the construction, operation, or characteristics of the articles packed in the box.
The invention is especially directed toward such a box constructed to illustrate the manner of adjusting the erasers of pencils having adjustable eraser holders, such as shown in Patent No. 1,373,062, dated March 29, 1921. Such pencils include the usual rodlike body having a tube at one end in which is slidably removably mounted a U-shaped eraser holder which adjustably holds an eraser between its arms, the eraser being securely clamped in said holder by pushing of the holder into said tube and the eraser being adjusted by pulling the holder out of the tube and then moving the eraser between the arms of the holder. The invention contemplates the provision of means in such a box whereby the movement of said eraser holder out of and into said tube shall be graphically illustrated or demonstrated automatically by the opening and closing of the box respectively.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved box of this character including two relatively slidable sections one of which has a picture or representation of a portion of any object or objects, scene or the like, while the other sect-ion has a picture of another portion of said object, scene or the like complemental to the first-mentioned picture so that when the box is closed the two together illustrate said portions of the object, scene, etc. in one relation, while opening the box causes a simulation of relative movement of said portions, and when the box is fully open the pictures illustrate said portions in another relation to each other.
A further object is to provide such abox wherein one section has a tongue or projec- .1930. Serial No. 448,884.
tion upon which a part of one of said pictures is arranged while the other section has a slot or opening correlated with the corresponding picture to slidably receive saidtongue so that relative movement of said sections causes movement of said tongue in said slot and simulation of relative movement of the parts of the article pictured.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved box of the general character described wherein said body section has an opening to display the articles in the box, said opening being uncovered by the cover section when the box is closed.
Other objects are to provide a box of the character described including novel and improved features of construction for limiting relative movement of said box sections into both open and closed positions so as to cause said pictures always to be properly correlated or in the proper relation to each other to accurately illustrate the various relative positions of the parts of the article'being illustrated or demonstrated, to provide on the box section adjacent said tongue shouldered portions or abutments to engage the ends of said slot and limit relative movement of the box sections in one direction, and to obtain other advantages and results as will be brought out by the following description.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention I have shown it in the accompanying drawings in connection with a box similar to that shown in the above-mentioned United States Patent No. 1,631,595, but it will be understood that-the invention may be eI-Ih bodied in'boxes of other constructions without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which corresponding, and jlik e parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views,
Figure lis a plan view of a box embodying my inventiomshowing the same closed.
Figure 2 is a similar viewshowing the box open.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
from the cover section.
Specifically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the box is of the known slide type and includes a body section A upon which is slidable a tubular cover section B. The body section may be formed of a single blank of suitable material, such as cardboard, and has a bottom 1, side flanges 2 and at one end a cover flap 8 which has side flanges l arranged parallel and in side by side relation to the flanges 2 of the body section. The side flanges 2 also preferably have end ears 5 folded inwardly under the cover flap 8. At the end of the body section opposite the cover flap 3 is a movable end closure flap 6 preferably integrally hinged to the bottom 1 of the body section, and adapted to be folded thereover as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The bottom 1 of the body section is formed adjacent the end opposite the closure flap 6 with a display opening 7 for displaying the contents of the box, said opening preferably being formed by slitting the bottom and folding the cut portion 8 toward the cover flap 3 as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The cover section B is adapted to slidably receive the body section therein, and is preferably formed of a length substantially equal to the distance between the display opening and the end of the bottom 1 to which the closure flap 6 is attached, so that the cover section may be slid to the first-mentioned end of the body section to hold the closure flap 6 in closed position and uncover the display opening 7 or may be slid toward the other end of the body section to release the closure flap 6 for access to the contents of the box. Therefore, when the box is closed the contents thereof can be viewed through the opening 7.
In accordance with the invention, the box sections A have thereon complemental pictures or representations of an object or objects, scene or the like so arranged that when the box sections are in closed relation said pictures are arranged in one relation to each other, while when the box sections are in open position, the pictures are arranged in another relation. On the drawings, each of the box sections has arranged thereon a representation or picture of one part of an eraser holder for pencils, such as shown in Patent No. 1,378,062, said pictures being so arranged as to illustrate the construction and operation of the eraser holder for adjusting the eraser; and the box is designed for containing pencils having'such eraser holders.
One of the pictures 9 is arranged on a tongue 10 formed on the cover flap 3, while the other picture 11 is arranged on the cover section B. The cover section has a slot or opening 12 to slidably receive the tongue 10, said slot being correlated to the picture 11 so that sliding of the tongue in the slot causes a simulation of the relative movement of the parts of the eraser holder in adjusting the eraser. These pictures 9 and 11 are so relatively arranged that when the box is closed the pictures illustrate the eraser holder in its normal operative position, while when the box is open the pictures represent the eraser during the adjustment thereof. It is obvious that the tongue 10 will be slid in opposite directions through the slot 12 upon relative movement of the box sections in opposite directions. For guiding the tongue into the slot, a guide flap 18 may be provided which consists of the portion of the cover section which is displaced when the slot is cut and pressed inwardly so as to form a beveled guide upon which the end of the tongue slides as the two sections of the box are initially fitted together.
For limiting relative movement of the box sections into opening position, and at the same time ensuring that the two pictures 9 and 11 shall not move out of their proper relative positions, I may provide shoulders 14 laterally extending from the tongue 10 to engage the ends 15 of the slot 12 as the box sections are moved into open position; while to limit closing movement of the box sections, the closure flap 6 may be provided with lateral ears 16 to abut the corresponding end of the cover section B. These ears also prevent movement of the tongue 10 out of the slot and ensure that the pictures 9 and 11 are properly related when the box is closed.
Obviously the details of construction of the box can be modified or changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, and furthermore it is within the scope of the invention to illustrate or represent the construction, operation or characteristics of any desired article, object, scene, etc. Therefore I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A packing and display box, comprising a body section having a bottom, side flanges, and an end flap hinged to said bottom at one end, and a tubular cover section slidable over said body section and being shorter than said body section, the body section and cover section each having a representation of one of two relatively movable complemental parts of an object, said body section having a tongue upon which the corresponding representation appears, and said cover section having a slot through which said tongue slides upon relative movement of said body section, said slot being correlated to said representation on the cover section so that said cover section may he slid to one end of the body section to hold said end flap closed and at the same time partially cover said tongue so that said representations on the tongue and cover section illustrate said parts of said object in one relation, or said cover section may be slid to the other end of the body section to release the said end flap for removal of the contents of the box and simultaneously uncover said tongue so that said representations illustrate said parts of said obj ect in another relation.
2. The packing and display box set forth in claim 1 wherein said body section has lateral shoulders at the base of said tongue to engage the ends of said slot in the cover section to limit relative movement of said body section and said cover section in the direction to release said end flap.
