WELL TUB ING SNUBBER Filed Sept. 26, 1929 Patented sec. 2 2, 1931 PATENTy ori-ICE Y HERBERT C. TIS, F SBIREVE'PORT, LOUISIANA WELL TUBING' SNUBBEB;
Application nled September 26, 1929. Serial No. 395,314.
This invention relates to snubbing devices, such as areshown and described-in my .rcopending application, Serial No. 395,315, filed Sept. 26, 1929, which discloses a method and 5 apparatus for inserting tubing into wells against high pressures existing therein.`
The present invention relates to the snubbing devices, one of which is adapted to be moved longitudinally of the tubing in one direction to obtain a grip on thetubing,l
whereby a movement of the said snubbing device, in an opposite direction, will carry the tubing therewith and force it into the well against the existing ressures therein.
The second snubbing evice is adapted to grip the tubing and hold the same against movement `in a direction out `of the well by the pressures existing inthe well, while the movable snubbing device is being moved along the tubing to obtain a new purchase thereon.
The construction of the snubbing devices will be fully disclosed hereinafter, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, 1n whic i Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively a plan view and side elevation of 'the movable snubbing.
f levers 5 and the shoe 10 carried thereby so device; t
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a plan view and side elevation of the stationary snubbmg device;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the snubbingl shoes employed in thesnubblng device shown in Figs. 1 to 4inclus1ve, and 1 Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the snubbing levers which support the said snubbing shoes shown in Fig. 5. 'Y A Referring to Figs. v1 and2, the string of tubing being inserted into the'well is indilcated at A. This movable snubbing device comprises a carrier -1 composed of a pair` of sidepmembers 2, 2 located at opposite sides of the tubing A and secured together by means of bolts 3 3 and spacing sleeves 4, 4 surrounding said bolts respectlvely.
Pivotally mounted intermediate the side members 2, 2 of the carrier 1 and disposed at opposite sides of the tubing A is a pair ofsnubbing levers 5, 5, which arel respectively mounted on bars 6, 6 extending between and supported at their opposite ends by the slde members 2, 2. The outer ends of the levers 5, 5 are provided with openings 7,7 respectively for the reception of cables or similar means by which the said levers may be turned on their pivots to eiect gripping of the tublng A in the manner disclosed in the said copending application. p 1 I The inner end of each of the levers 5 isI slotted, as indicated at 8,'for the reception 00 of a fin 9 formed on the rear face of a snubbing shoelO, the said end of the lever 5 and the iin 9 being bored as indicated at 11 and 12 respectively for the reception of a'pivot pin 13 by which the shoes 10 are pivotally or 65 loosely mounted on the inner ends of thesaid levers 5.
The inner faces of the shoes 10, 10 respectively are toothed or serrated as indi- .cated at 14, these faces being concaved and extendingA substantially` around the entire outer surface of the `tubing A for the purpose of distributing the vpressure exerted by the levers 5 to all points circumferentially of the said tubing to prevent collapsing of the said tubing.
, A spring 415 is provided between each of the n that when the pressure is released from the outer ends of the levers 5 the shoes 10 will 3 be drawn to and maintained in a predetermined position relative to the respective levers, whereby theconcaved surfaces of the said shoes will be maintained in substantially parallel relationshi to the tubing A and providin for self-a gnment of the said surfaces of t e shoes with the tubing when pressure is `applied to the outer ends of the said levers, the upper rear edge of each of the fins 9 being inclined as indicated at 16 for en- 9 gagement with a similarly inclined surface 17 formed in the base of theslots 8 in the respective levers, when the shoes 10 are not in contact with the tubing.
As indicated in the drawings, the teeth 95 20 formed in the serrated face of each of the shoes 10 are inclined in one direction on one side of each tooth, the other side of the tooth being substantially perpendicular to theplane of the tubing s'o that when the carrler 1 is moved in one direction along the tubing A the saidteeth will glide or ride over the sur- Atthe opposite end of the carrier the side members 2a, 2a are secured together by bolts 3b and are spaced apart by a block 25 through which the bolts 3b pass.
Intermediate the side frames 2a, 2a is a snubbing lever 5a, pivotally mounted on a 20 pivot bolt 6a, to which is pivoted at 13a a snubbing shoe a of the same general character as that above described, a spring a being interposed between the lever 5a and shoe 10a for the purposes above noted.
At the opposite side of the string of tubing A is a shoe which is slidably mounted in the carrier 1a between the side members 2a, 2a thereof, the said side framesbeing 3 0 eprovided with` slots 31 which are adapted t0 receive projections 32, 32 which extend from the opposite sides of the shoe 30 into 4said slots. The shoe 30, like the shoes 10 and 10a, is-provided with a serrated concaved surface 33 which is adapted to engage the outer surface of the tubing A. VThe opposite end of the shoe 30 is provided with a socket 34 adapted to receive a head 35 formed on one end of a screw-shaft 36 which projects 40 through a threadedaperture formed in the spacing 4block 25, the opposite end of the screw-shaft 36 being provided with a.hand\ 4wheel36az by means of which the shaft 36 may' be rotated toeifectmovement of the shoe 30 in a direction longitudinally of the carrier 1a and laterally with respect to the tubing A. The head 35 of-the screw-shaft 36 .is held within the .socket 34 by means of a plate 37 which is apertured for the passage of the shaft 36 and which is secured to the shoe 30Y by means of screws 38, 38.
The carrier 1a is adapted to be secured by bolts 40, 40 to a` stationary object such as a fitting B appli-ed to the upper end of the well casing. After the movable carrier 1 has been drawn downwardly toward the stationary carrier la thereby forcing the tubing down into the well casing B against the pressure existing therein the outer end of thev` lever 5a is forced downwardly by any suit- *able means suchas a cable or a hand bar adapted to be inserted ,in the openings 7a formed in the said lever for the vpurpose of moving the `'shoe 10a'into contact with the r surface of the tubing whichV will force the tubing against the serrated surface of the .be controlled.
' ally of the tubing A for the purpose of permitting the passage of couplings or other devices extending beyond the 'outer surface of the tubing A as the tubingl is being forced down into the well casin savingof gas and oil has been made possible in wells which, prior to my invention, were permitted to flow freely as no .means had as yet been' perfected which would effect the inserting of tubing into the well by which the gas and oil under such high pressure could I claim: r
