TUBE APPLICATOR Filed July 22, 1963 INVENTOR MZ/AM ,8 24/7/ United States Patent 3,233,313 TUBE APPLICATOR William R. Roth, 14% Ave. 50, Venice, Calif. Filed July 22, 1963, Ser. No. 296,573 3 Claims. (Cl. 29-235) This invention relates to a tube applicator and more particularly to an apparatus for expanding a flexible tube such as a rubber hose for applying the same to another tube and includes also apparatus for removing the expanded tube from the tube to which it is applied.
It is accordingly one object of this invention to provide a simple and economical means for applying flexible tubes to other tubes and for easily and quickly removing the same.
This and other objects, features and advantages will be apparent from the annexed specification in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary view similar to FIGURE 1;
FEGURE 3 is a fragmentary side view of the tube being applied to another tube by the device illustrated;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of the present invention;
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary side View of the alternative embodiment shown removing an expanded tube from the other tube;
FiGURE 6 is a view similar to FIGURE 5 showing the two tubes separated; and
FIGURE 7 is a section through the expanded tube and applicator shown applying the expanded tube to the other tube.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings and particularly to FIGURES 1 through 3, the applicator as indicated by the numeral 8 consists of two members 9 and 1t) pivoted together as at 11 having end pieces 12 and 13 and handle pieces 14 and 15. It will be appreciated that when handle pieces 14 and 15 are gripped and forced towards each other, end pieces 12 and 13 will be forced apart. Sleeves 16 and 17 are rotatably mounted on end pieces 12 and 13, but the movement thereof is restricted by pins formed upon the end pieces and received in J-slots 19. The outer ends of members 16 and 17 are flattened as at 20-21 provided wtih upstanding cylindrical segments 22 and 23. In use the above-identified device is placed with the segments 22 and 23 extending into a tube 39, the handle members 14 and 15 gripped to expand to place it over the tube 31. To retract the segments 22 and 23 from the expanded tube it is merely necessary to pull back on the tool permitting the sleeve 16 and azsais Patented Feb. 8, 1956 17 to rotate so as to be retracted from the tube 30, as shown in FIGURE 3.
Referring now more particularly to FIGURES 4, 5, 6 and 7, there is shown an embodiment generally similar to that shown in FIGURES l, 2 and 3. However, the end pieces 12 A and 13A are not provided with rotatable sleeves, but directly carry the cylindrical segments 22A and 23A. Pivoted as at 50 on upstanding lugs 41 is a lever 42 having a forked end 43. This forked end 43 O is designed to slip under the tube 39 and to assist in removing the segments 22A and 23A from an applied tube 3!) particularly shown in FIGURES 5 and 6.
While there has been described what is at present considered a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention and it is intended to cover herein all such changes and modifications as come within the true spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device for expanding a flexible tubing and ap plying the same to another tube comprising: a pair of levers forming handle members at one of their ends and the other ends forming expanding means; said other ends having flattened ends, said levers being pivotally connected between their ends, upstanding cylindrical segments mounted on said flattened ends for insertion into said flexible tube whereby said flexible tube may be expanded on movement of said handle members toward each other and tubular sleeves rotatably mounted on said other ends and carrying said flattened ends.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 in which said other ends and said tubular sleeves are provided with stop means for limiting the degree of rotation of said tubular sleeves.
3. A device as set forth in claim 1 in which said stop means comprises a pin on said other ends and J-slots in said tubular sleeves.

Claims (1)
1. A DEVICE FOR EXPANDING A FLEXIBLE TUBING AND APPLYING THE SAME TO ANOTHER TUBE COMPRISING: A PAIR OF LEVERS FORMING HANDLE MEMBERS AT ONE OF THEIR ENDS AND THE OTHER ENDS FORMING EXPANDING MEANS; SAID OTHER ENDS HAVING FLATTENED ENDS, SAID LEVERS BEING PIVOTALLY CONNECTED BETWEEN THEIR ENDS, UPSTANDING CYLINDRICAL SEGMENTS MOUNTED ON SAID FLATTENED ENDS FOR INSERTION INTO SAID FLEXIBLE TUBE WHEREBY SAID FLEXIBLE TUBE MAY BE EXPANDED ON MOVEMENT OF SAID HANDLE MEMBERS TOWARD EACH OTHER AND TUBULAR SLEEVES ROTATABLY MOUNTED ON SAID OTHER ENDS AND CARRYING SAID FLATTENED ENDS.
