Description
J. S. PEARCE.
GAME-TARGET.
N. 183774. Patented Oct. 31, 1876.
UNITED STATES PA'IENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. PEARCE, OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LEWIS WARNER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAME-TARGETS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,774, dated October 31, l87 6; application led April 28, 1876.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES S. PEARGE, of Northampton, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new Gaine-Target, of which the following is a specification:
The nature and objects of my invention are fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings and description.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective view from one side, Fig. II being a front-end view.
This device is formed to represent a mimic fort, or broadside of a vessel, with guns projecting from the embrasures or ports, and with loose pins, representing men, behind the guns, and is provided also with a tlag, which is raised when released by the movement of one of the guns. The men figures or pins are arranged to stand directly behind the guns, which are loose in their ports, so that a blow upon the muzzle of a gun will cause its butt to upset the soldier or man ligure immemediately opposite.
The flag-statt' is hinged or pivoted near one end to the inner face ot' the parapet, and is weighted, so as to swing the stai to a perpendicular position when released, and the Hag and staff are held below the parapet by a rod, m, secured into and extending from one ot' the men iigures, Which, passing over the staff, is received in a socket, a, in the parapet, so that when this man is knocked away by the movement of the gun opposite it the ag will be freed and swung up.
The game consists in propelling a marble against the muzzles of the guns, to knock down the men behind them, and to release the Bag.
As the readiest way of forming the sockets or embrasures for the guns, l bore horizontal and parallel holes in a board, B, at the distance apart required between the guns. Into these the guns C are loosely inserted, to have what represents their butt-ends nearly Hush with the rear side of board B, and their muzzles projecting, as shown in Fig. I.
The men A are placed, as before mentioned,
close against the rear of the guns, and to cause them to fall more certainly when struck by the guns, I arrange the platform H for them to rest upon, and from which, when pushed, they unavoidably fall.
The men, as well as the guns, I prefer to make of lightmaterial, such as pine Wood, and the latter taper to their muzzles, to present a smaller mark.
In Fig. I the marble c is shown as having driven in a gun and upset one ofthe men. The flag-sta'D is shown swung below the parapet F, and as being hinged, at f, to the parapet, and provided atits shorter end with the weight b; and it Will be seen that when the rod m, secured into and extending from one of the men iigures, as A2, is withdrawn from the socket at c, the staff D with its ag will rise, the Weight b swinging into the Well provided for it, as shown in the board B. In Fig. lI the Hag is shown thus raised by the displacement ot' the gun and man forming its catch.
The board B, with all ot' its parts, may be attached to a bed to afford a rolling surface, or may be disconnected, to be placed upon a table or door.
Without a departure from the principle of my invention, the material of which the parts are composed may be each or all changed, the guns may be arranged in one or more tiers, and the ball or marble may be propelled by a cue or directly by the hand.
What I claim isl. The toy target herein described, consisting, essentially, ot' the socketed board or frame with a raised edge or parapet, the guns O, fitted to slide in said board, and the loose pins or men figures A,all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
2. In combination with the board B, a sliding gnu, C, and the loose pin A2, having the rod m, the pivoted and weighted dag-staff D, substantially as described.
JAMES S. PEARCE.
