SHAMPOO BOARD Filed Oct. 17, 1929 INVEN TOR.

Patented Dec. 22, 1931 PATENT OFFICE THEODORE EUGENE REYNOLDS, F CINCINNATI, OHIO SHAMPOO BOARD Application filed October 17, 1929. Serial No. 400,367.
My invention relates to shampoo boards such as are used in beauty parlors and barber shops and like places, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a shampoo '5 board having a wide flange along its sides and front end and so shaped that it will partly encircle the neck and keep the water from being splashed out upon the person and clothes of the one being shampooed, and
having a comparatively broad neck support for comfortably supporting the neck of the person being shampooed during the shampooing operation; and second, to provide a means for supporting the shampoo board on any of the standard beauty parlor or barber chairs, and to'provide ways for adjusting the shampoo board on said supporting means to any required height, angle or degree of pro- 7 pinquity to the person being shampooed, and
firmly locking the whole assembly in position.
I attain these objects by the means illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a shampoo board;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the-shampoo'board on line 3 y of Figure 1. In this View other'parts are shown in side elevation. Figure 3 is a rear view ofa shampoo board supported. on a beauty parlor chair, 1
Figure 4 is a cross section. of a part of the shampoo board, the supporting bracket and the adjusting hinge. 3 f Figure 5 is a perspective view poo board attachment.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the neck support. jfi f The shampoo board l has ah upwardly projecting flange 2onboth sides of the board and at the. front end." The board is made with a concave bottom and with the rear end open so that the water will flow off into the receptacle prepared-to receive it. The front end of the shampoo board 1 has a recess 3 5 adapted to receive the neck of the person being shampooed, and a detachable neck rest 4 designed to fit the inside of the flange 2 at the apex of the recess, is held in place by a bolt 5 passing through the flange 2 and a vertical slot 6 in the neck rest 4. The bolt 5 of the sham- I have shown a detachable neck rest which 5* is the form of construction most easily manufactured, but the neck rest may be cast integral with the board if that is preferred.
The shampoo board 1 is provided with depending lugs 8 to which are secured asupporting bracket 9 by means of screws 1.0. The bracket 9 is provided with a longitudinal slot 11.
12 represents the back of an ordinary beauty parlor or barber chair having a headrest slideway 13 therein. 14 is a shampoo board supporting attachment. The beauty parlor and barber chairs now on the market have slideways ofvarious sizes. In order that one shampoo board attachment maybe used with all standard chairs having a rectangular shaped slideway, I have made the attachment with a comparatively long step 15 adapted to fit the smallest slideway:
in any of the standard chairs, and with a series of shorter but increasingly larger steps 16', 17 and 18 adapted to fit the larger'slideways of chairs of other manufacturers. Additio'nal short steps may be added if required and'the attachment may also be made with two slide prongs} d When the shampoo board is to be used, the head rest which is a part of the regular equipment of all beauty parlor and barber chairs, is removed from the'chair, and the slide- 15 of the attachmentM is-inserted in the' headrest slide-way 13 of thechair until one of the steps is reachedfwhich fillsj the slide way in that particular chair. The step which fits the slideway will hold the attachment steady on the chair "and the extension of 'theglong step 15 intothe slideway 13will' support the weight of'the shampoo board while it is in use. A f
The attachment. 14 is provided with an opening 19 for receiving the rod 20. The rod QO'may be adjusted vertically and secured in any desired position by means of the set screw 21. e v
The rod 20 supports on its upper end an adjusting hinge 22 composed of a stationary member 23 and a rotating member 24:. The members 23 and 24: are provided on their contacting faces with a serrate margin 25 so that when the members are placed face to face the serrate margin in one member will engage the margin on the other member and prevent any rotary movement of one member with relation to the other. The members 23 and 24 are held in contact by a bolt 26 passing through the center of each member and having a washer 27 and a wing nut 28 on its threaded end.
The rotating member 24 has cast on its outer face lugs 29 which are adapted to fit the slot 11 in the bracket 9 and serve as a slide on which the shampoo board may be adjusted towards or away from the person in the chair.
The angle of the shampoo board 1 may be changed by rotating the member 24 of the adjusting hinge 22. After the desired position has been attained the whole assembly may be locked in position by tightening the nut 28 which forces the serrate margins on members 23 and 24 into engagement. The tightening of the nut 28 also clamps the bracket 9 between the washer 27 and the outer face of the member 24 and prevents any longitudinal movement of the bracket 9.
I claim:
1. The combination with a shampoo board of a board supporting bracket detachably secured to the under side of said board, a longitudinal slot in the bracket, an adjusting hinge comprising a stationary member and a rotating member, each of said members having a serrate margin on its contacting face, lugs on the outer face of the rotating member for supporting the board supporting bracket, means for locking the members of said adjusting hinge and the board supporting bracket in fixed relation, a shampoo board attachment adapted to fit the head rest slideway of various barber and beauty parlor chairs, and a support for said adjusting hinge adjustably mounted in said shampoo board attachment.
2. The combination with a shampoo board of a board supporting bracket on the under side of said board, a longitudinal slot in the bracket, an adjusting hinge comprising a stationary member and a rotating member, each of said members having a serrate margin on its contacting face, lugs on the outer face of the rotating member to carry the board supporting bracket, means for locking the members of said adjusting hinge and said board supporting bracket in fixed relation, a shampoo board attachment adapted to fit the head rest slideway of various barber or beauty parlor chairs, and a support for said adjusting hinge adjustably mounted in the shampoo board attachment.
3. The combination with a shampoo board of a board supporting bracket secured to the underside of said board, a longitudinal slot in the bracket, an adjusting hinge comprising a stationary member and a rotating member, lugs on the outer face of the rotating member for carrying the board supporting bracket, means for locking the members of said adjusting hinge and the board supporting bracket in fixed relation, a shampoo board attachment designed to fit in the head rest slideway of various makes of barber and beauty parlor chairs, a support for said adjusting hinge adjustably mounted in said shampoo board.
4:. A shampoo board attachment for barber or beauty parlor chairs, having a slide with a plurality of steps, each step being of a different size and each step being of sufficient length to engage the walls of the headrest slideway of a different make of barber and beauty parlor chairs, and means for adjustably supporting a shampoo board in said attachment.
5. A shampoo board attachment for barber or beauty parlor chairs having a slide with a plurality of steps, each step being of a different size and each step being of sufficient length to engage the headrest slideway of a barber or beauty parlor chair, a lug projecting from the rear side of said slide, an opening in said lug to receive a shampoo board supporting rod, and means for clamping said rod in position.
