The invention relates generally to spool ends and more particularly to spool ends which are adapted to be formed from sheet metal and which may be readily applied to af roll of adhesive tape o r the like after the material has been wound on a cardboard or composition core.
The general object of the invention is to provide a spool end arranged. to be applied to such cores and to have means formed or bedded into the core to secure the spool end thereto. l
Another object is to provide for use 1n connection with spool ends of such construction, a method of assembling the rolled tape and Spool ends and of securing the ends tothe core.
Other objects and, advantages will .become apparent from the followingldescrlption and from the accompanying drawings, 1n which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section through a roll of adhesive tape, illustrating a preferred form of the invention, secured to one end of the roll and another exemplification of said form ypositioned adjacent the other end of the roll.
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section through the die portion of a machine adapted to secure the assembled spool ends to the roll. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the lower die structure with the jaws contracted.
While I have shown in the drawings and will herein describe in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend to limit the invention to the specific form disclosed, but aim to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit rolled peripheral edge 4 and a central aper ture 3El approximating in size the bore of the core. A thimble 5 for positioning the disk on the roll and securing the end to the core is formed separately from the disk and is arranged to lit snu ly within the core 1. The thimble is provi ed with an annular flange 6 extending outwardly from its outer end,
this flan e being preferably curved inwardly to a 'slig t extent so as to interengage effectively With the end disk which is outwardly curved at 7 around theJ aperture 3a.
The invention contemplates that the thimbles and disks will be formed separately and that the ends will be applied to a roll of tape by, first, positioning a pair of disks against the opposite ends of the roll, second, inserting a pair of thimbles through the apertures in the disks and into the bore of the core so that the flanges 6 abut the disks and, third, striking v out or embedding portions of the thimbles into the core while the parts are held in their assembled position, so that thereafter the thimbles which are then attached to the core secure the parts of the spool together and eii'ectively clamp the disks onto the ends of the roll. In order to secure the end disk against rotation relatively to the rolled tape the edge 7 of the thimble and the flange 6 of the disk are preferably formed with interengaging portions or teeth 7 and 6a respectively.
In Figs. 3 and 4 there is illustrated the die portion of a machine or punch adapted to vsecure spool ends of the form disclosed to a roll of tape. This device comprises a lower or stationary support l() and an upper movable Vmember 11 each having supporting rings 12 secured thereto. Centrally of the lower ring 12 is mounted an actuating pin 13 which is tapered inwardly at its forward end 14 and intermediate said pin and the inner Wall of the ring are positioned three jaws 15 having 2- recaer/e projections 16 thereon. These jaws are nor mally urged upwardly by means of a coil spring 17 and are moved together when moved upwardly by tapered surfaces 12a on the ring l2 which engage correspondingly tapered outer surfaces 15a on the jaws. On their inner surfaces the jaws are tapered correspondingly to the pin portion 14 so that when the jaws are depressed against the action of the spring, they are expanded outwardly:
The upper member 11 has a tapered pm 18 secured thereto and extending downwardly centrally through the upper ring 12. The pin 18 is mounted on a rod 19 which extends through the member 11 and has nuts 20 screw threaded on its outer end. A coil spring 21 is positioned bet-Ween the upper end 22 of the pin 18 and the member 11 and is arran ed normally to urge the pin 18 downwar ly. A set of three jaws 28, duplicates of the jaws 15, are positioned within the upper ring 12 'and normally urged outwardly from the ring by means of a coil spring 24. The spring 21 serves to compensate for variations in the length of the completed spool and prevents splitting of a thimble if the spool is longer than normal, i. e., longer than the preadjusted stroke of the upper-die member 11, and insures full expansion of the jaws if the spool is shorter than normal.
When mounted in a suitable machine (not shown) the upper member l1 is arranged to be reclprocated toward and from the lower member 10, so that when in their parted relation, a roll of tape having a pair of end disks and a pair` of thimbles positioned thereon may be placed With the lower jaws 15 itting into the lower thimble. By moving theI member 11 downwardly the jaws 23 enter the upper thimble until the jaws engage the end walls of the thimbles and flanges of the thimbles engage the disks and press them against the ends of the roll. Further descent of the member 11 then causes the sets of jaws 15 and 23 to be expanded by the pins 13 and 18 so that the projections 16 strike out portions 27 of the thimbles and embed them in the core 1. When this operation has been completed, withdrawal of the member 11 permits the springs 17 and 24 to urge the jaws l5 and 23 outwardly of the rings. The upper jaws and ring are provided with corresponding tapered portions 25 and 26 (similar to the tapered portions- 12a and 15a on the lower ring and jaws) arranged to contract the jaws through such movement and disengage them from the thimbles. Durino' the further withdrawal of the member 11 the upper jaws are withdrawn from the spool so that the spool can be removed from the lower jaws.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that by forming the spool end in separate parts and securing the disk portions to the roll by means of the thimble portions, the invention has eliminated the operation which would otherwise he necessary to secure the thimble to the disk prior to the application of the spool end to the roll. This is of decided advantage not only in that it decreases the cost of manufacture but also in that it permits the disks and thimbles to be shipped more economically, the disks being relatively fiat, Furthermore, since the thimble is made separately from the disk, no difficulty is encountered because of the distortion of the disk and consequent injury to the lithographed surface thereof which might otherwise result if the thimble were drawn from the metal of the lithographed disk.
With the projections 27 forced into the core after the parts have been assembled the ends are effectively and permanently secured to the core so that they cannot rotate therein or be withdrawn or detached therefrom. This forms a somewhat unitary spool structure, the interengaging portions of the thimbles and disks serving to secure the disks against rotation with respect to the tape and core.
I claim .as my invention z' A spool of the character described com prising a tubular core, a head having a oentral aperture with an outwardly turned toothed edge, a separately formed tubular thimble arranged to enter said aperture and to fit snugll within one end of thecore, an annular ra ial flange on said thimble overlying said toothed edge, said lange having indentations in its inner surface to cooperate with said toothed ed e to prevent relative rotation of said hea and said core, and means fixing said thimble to said core.
